Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Matthew moved out to Silicon Valley in order to pursue his dreams of being an innovative mechanical engineer.</span><span style="font-size: medium;"> </span>

<span style="font-size:medium;">At Santa Clara University, he is highly involved in the club “Santa Clara Innovation and Design.” Teaching young students the importance of design thinking in not only engineering, but also every other field of study. It was through this club that he found out about the Innovation Fellows program. As a part of this Club, he has helped organize Santa Clara’s second annual Designation, and at this time is helping to organize the Third annual.</span>

Last year, he designed an electric long board from scratch, and over this past summer he designed an affordable locking iPad stand to attach to maid carts in order to increase efficiency for Microtel Inn & Suites in Council Bluffs, Iowa. </span>

<font face="trebuchet ms, helvetica, sans-serif" size="3">Santa Clara, as shown through out Landscape Canvas, has many resources - from classes to clubs, from speaker events to workshops - but these are far underutilized due to a system of communication that is both difficult for the administration to maintain and doesn't fully reach out to the students of each college. In the school of Engineering, there is a weekly email sent out that is hand-crafted every Sunday night that lists out most of the events that will be happening that week. Club meetings, Maker Lab events, workshops, and many others are listed off in this email- but in the eyes of many, it comes across as almost "spammy". Most notably, not all engineers are interested in all disciplines of engineering, so they need to sort through dozens of items in order to find one they might be interested in.</font>

<span style="font-size:medium;">In order to give the school an experience of innovation and entrepreneurship, Santa Clara offers various one-unit pop up classes on relevant topics. A problem with these classes is that they don’t satisfy any requirement, are offered at odd times, and they are only worth one unit. This makes it so students can't or don’t want to take them. Therefore by combining them all into a 4-unit class would solve this problem. A problem that hasn’t been resolved yet is the fact that these classes are traditionally at odd times and are hard to fit in the schedule. If the classes were all a part of the same class it wouldn’t have to be squeezed in eliminating the potential to take other classes. The largest benefit of these classes being in line so they can build off each other, and come together in a big final project that has a real world component.</span>

There are also many events run through the school such as the KEEN Entrepreneurial Mindset Challenge and the SCID Designathon.</span></span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-c45692d3-29dc-89dc-f72a-a43bcbf7598c"><span style="font-size: 15px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">Being in the Silicon Valley, a lot of the professors here at Santa Clara come from entrepreneurial professions.  Many teachers in the business school teach with the entrepreneurial mindset, and give real world examples from their own experiences.  Often, faculty also have important relationships with start up companies and encourage these companies to come speak on campus.  Professors also get many grants that the hand off to students to encourage entrepreneurship.  For example in 2008, the engineering school was given a very large grant to grow the entrepreneurial opportunities on campus, and that they have.  Every single senior must create their own design product, considering many entrepreneurial ideals.  </span></span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-c45692d3-29dc-89dc-f72a-a43bcbf7598c"><span style="font-size: 15px; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">Santa Clara very much encourages its students to aid in regional and local economic efforts.  One very integral way is through the many jobs that Santa Clara University supplies the area with.  Students are given very many opportunities in the area and often stay to work in the area.  The school also runs collaborations with quite a few businesses in the area.  An example of this is the collaboration with NASA and the engineering school, in which many students can work.  The school also encourages its students to be socially responsible in all things including promoting charitable programs in dorms, and even requiring a class that works with some kind of charity.  Santa Clara very much cares and utilizes the surrounding area in a beneficial way.</span></span>

Makeathons are an excellent way of collaborating with students from all around campus in different majors. It enables them to use their creativity to innovate and explore new ideas that they may have. It is a competition, but it is focused on learning rather than winning. Its purpose is to help students gain experience with the process of design and the use of equipment that they would normally miss out on in the classroom. 

== Goals  ==

To run a successful Makeathon, several goals should be outlined. What are you trying to accomplish and why? 

*Develop passion and hands on skills with tools and other machinery
*Connect with resources and other participants
*Invest in people
*Have a good experience and want participants to come back the next year to mentor/help
*Have it be less about competition, but more about learning, forming relationships, and having fun
*Gather a diversity of students across all majors 
*Safety
*Funding

== Where To Begin ==

There is a lot of planning that needs to happen beforehand and as well as a number of factors to take into consideration.

<u>Funding and Advertising</u>

In order to cover the costs of all supplies and other equipment tools, there must be sponsors. A good route to take is looking at Kent State in Ohio's Fashion Tech Hackathon and to have tiers as sponsors. Target is also another good option. It can be expensive, depending on the number of people you expect to be attending, which is why advertising is so crucial. There should be enough supplies for all participants, not too little and not too much. It should be done in several different ways to achieve the best outcome.

*Use Eventbrite for tickets and also keep track of how many are officially attending
*Advertise for a long period of time to gain more participants
*Spread by word of mouth
*Make posters around campus size 11x17
*Create facebook event and use money to spread word
*Class visits 
*Email professors of relevant classes

== Running the Makeathon ==

To have it run as smoothly and as successful as possible, a good schedule should be planned so that there is enough time for the participants to think, plan, build and present their ideas in front of the judges. 

<u>Dates and Times</u>

*Weekend long (Friday - Saturday or Sunday)
*Give them an open ended task, dont make anything too specific, let them build anything they want to!
*Friday - form teams, mingling, music, food, meet new people, brainstorm, learn prompt, choose what they build
*Saturday - mentors/professors help with the build, student volunteers tell them where supplies located, judging takes place at end of day
*Allow enough time for prototyping and brainstorming

Two different types of judging can be done, depending on your preference.

It should be noted that, usually, a competition like this without a big prize will attract more students because they are more interested about learning than winning.

What happens after the Makeathon is over? If particpants enjoyed it, let them know what kinds of classes they should think about taking in the future to pursue their passions.
