Marlen is a fellow at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. Although originally from Germany, she decided to move to the Netherlands for her university degree. She is curious about other cultures, new project ideas, and learning new things.

During her studies, she was striving towards working in interdisciplinary teams and developing herself. She noticed that to bring effective and sustainable change, you need to sharpen your own skills as much as possible. Therefore, she decided to join the Honours Programme at the University of Twente. Here, she learned about Change Management, developed her presentation skills, and was part of an inspiring community. After finishing her bachelor’s in Psychology, she further wanted to gain professional work experience in Marketing and also contribute towards more sustainable mobility options.

Therefore, she joined Solar Team Twente which aims to build the most efficient solar car in the world. She knew that with a social science background, she could not help a lot with building the technology for sustainable mobility. However, she wanted to contribute and found a way through promoting the organisation via various social media channels and other activities. That showed her that you can make an impact no matter what study background you have.

As a University Innovation Fellow, she focused mainly on student well-being together with Thomas Goudsblom. Here, she developed a workshop a workshop to help students envision their (professional) future. Moreover, she worked on the “Are you okay?” campaign aimed at breaking the stigma around talking about well-being. Within the project, 3 videos were produced that encouraged students to open up about how they are really doing and share problems they are facing. The videos reached over 4000 students and were shared via multiple channels. Next to that, she also worked on other projects like the European Meetup, connecting students and start-ups, and giving Design Thinking workshops.

Marlen is currently working in User Experience Research in Munich, Germany.

Moreover, she worked on the “Are you okay?” campaign which aimed at breaking the stigma around talking about well-being.

Due to her passion for making systems easier and safer to use, she is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Human Factors and Engineering Psychology. Her main interests lie in User Experience and Human–Computer Interaction.

Moreover, she worked on the “Are you okay?” campaign which aimed at breaking the stigma around talking about well-being. Within the project, 3 videos were produced that encouraged students to open up about how they are really doing and share problems they are facing. The videos reached over 4000 students and were shared via multiple channels. Next to that, she also worked on other projects like the European Meetup, connecting students and start-ups, or teaching Design Thinking to Honours students.

Due to her passion for making systems easier and safer to use, she is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Human Factors and Engineering Psychology. Her main interests lie in User Experience and Human–Computer Interaction.
Bio
Marlen is a Psychology student from the University of Twente (UT) in the Netherlands. Originally from Germany, she came to the UT to learn more about the Dutch way of living, human-computer interaction, and as every good psychology does, to learn about reading minds.

Looking back, she is happy about her choice. The UT offers many options to become active and inspired by the drive to work in more interdisciplinary teams, she decided to use these possibilities. In year 3, she joined a biosensor team that aimed at building a biosensor from scratch to increase the life quality of epilepsy patients.

After finishing her Bachelor, she took on another project related to sustainable transport. She loves going on road trips but is often conflicted due to the CO2 emissions. Travelling by train is also a great option, but still not satisfactorily environmentally friendly. That is why she wants to support the development of efficient solar cars with her university team. She hopes to educate people about this issue and make them realise the potential that lies within solar-powered vehicles. Due to her passion for transport and mobility, she would also like to learn more about user experience in that sector.
Bio
Marlen is a Psychology student from the University of Twente (UT) in the Netherlands. Originally from Germany, she came to the UT to learn more about human-computer interaction, what makes humans behave the way they do, and of course, as every good Psychology student does, learn how to read minds.

Looking back, she is happy about her choice. The university offers a variety of opportunities for students to become active and meet new students. Inspired by other ambitious students and the drive to work in more interdisciplinary teams, she joined a group of students aiming at building a biosensor to increase epilepsy patient’s quality of life. Here, one thing became clear to her:

You do not necessarily have to be an engineer to contribute to such projects. You can also do so by marketing/promoting the project, contributing ideas, or something else.

One of such projects is promoting sustainable transport. She loves going on road trips but is often conflicted due to the CO2 emissions. Travelling by train is also a great option, but still not satisfactorily environmentally friendly. That is why she wants to support the development of efficient solar cars with a team at her university. She hopes to educate people about this issue and make them realise the potential that lies within solar-powered vehicles. Due to her passion for transport and mobility, she would also like to learn more about user experience in that sector.

Hi, your guide was super interesting! I wish more possibilities like you try to create would exist. Online Courses are not only cheap but also easily accessible. To be fair, education in Europe is not as expensive as in other countries so there, it might not make a huge difference cost-wise. However, an online course allows students to learn when they want and how fast they want. Some learn better at 8am, some best at 11pm. Moreover, some can watch it at a higher speed, and some can re-watch parts again or stop the video to google a question. With online courses, individual personality differences have less impact on the student success. Thank you for this guide and I really hope that more projects like that will be implemented!
