His focus studies are in Corporate Finance where it includes subsets of the financial industry such as corporate finance, investment banking, and financial modeling. Although his school is in Nashville, he is a Memphis native, where he was very active in community development centering around economic empowerment. Josh originally went to East Tennessee State University, where Economics was his focus, but due to the excellent history in Finance Lipscomb had, he decided to transfer.

Organizations such as Finance Club, Collegiate 100, and working as a Chick-Fil-A catering driver. He has also completed internships that includes areas of corporate law, start-ups, and asset management. In his spare time, he offers assistance and guidance to students wanting know about the world of investing, entrepreneurship or the latest rising opportunities in business.

She is involved on campus in several areas- an on campus job in the College of Business, a Business as Mission (BAM) Fellow, a member of the Presidential Ambassadors Council, and a member of the Dean’s Student Leadership Council. Lydia was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska but decided to leave the Midwest for her college career. She was especially drawn to Lipscomb because of their Business as Mission program, along with the close-knit community on campus. Though she is 750 miles from home, she is still a proud Husker fan, and wears her red Nebraska shirt every Saturday during football season.

This 8 week business mentorship program allowed her to learn about developing-world entrepreneurship as she also gained international experience. When she returned to the United States, she started and co-taught an Entrepreneurship Accelerator course at the Nashville Hispanic Family Foundation (HFF). This was a 6 week course designed by Lydia and a fellow student, and was created to help Latino immigrants learn about running a small business in the United States.

We have many different opportunities for students to intentionally engage in entrepreneurship and innovation on our campus, starting with the Entrepreneurship degree. Students can major in Entrepreneurship, which includes courses such as Entrepreneur Finance, Entrepreneur Marketing, and other ENT Special Topics Courses. Students may also choose to minor in Entrepreneurship, which includes courses such as Entrepreneurs Intro to Business, The Social Enterprise, or other Entrepreneurship related electives. Each of these courses are offered through Lipscomb’s Center for Entrepreneurship, which was founded in 2011 to provide students with more entrepreneurial opportunities on campus and in the Nashville community. 

<span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(29, 33, 38); background-color: transparent; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) are also promoted through on-campus clubs such as Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization (CEO) or Baja Sae Team. Each of these on-campus organizations are student led, and offer students from many different areas of study the opportunity to engage in I&E on Lipscomb’s Campus. Though they are student-led, many faculty & staff members are heavily involved in these organizations, as they help students connect with individuals outside of the Lipscomb Community. Other I&E opportunities are shared with students through various newsletters that are sent out to students on a weekly or monthly basis. For example, the Office of Student Life sends out information about the many opportunities that students can engage in, some being directly I&E related, others being specifically recreational. Each college within the University sends out a newsletter to all of their students, advertising different opportunities student have to engage on and off campus. The College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Education, and many other departments each have unique opportunities to allow students to participate in I&E related activities.

The Kittrell Pitch competition allows students from any area of study to pitch their business idea to a panel of judges, giving students the opportunity to win cash prizes to fund their entrepreneurial endeavors. 3 Day Startup also allows for learning and engagement for many students. This is a new addition to Lipscomb’s Center for Entrepreneurship, and is the next step being taken to grow and improve Lipscomb’s I&E ecosystem.

These courses are mainly offered in the College of Business and College of Engineering. They are offered to give students the chance to experiment with innovation and entrepreneurship, typically within the Lipscomb community on campus. These courses, however, may also offer students engagement with international experiences, such as communicating with startups in other countries, or going to visit startups across the globe.

Though it is not a formal internship, Lipscomb’s service opportunities allow students to connect with industries they may not otherwise engage with. Because of Lipscomb’s reputation within the community, companies may have students on-site for a few hours, and end up connecting with students for a long-term opportunity.

Students and faculty can both engage in regional and local development efforts through service opportunities (see “Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration”). Many organizations- large & small, for-profit & non-profit, private & public- come to Lipscomb for help and guidance in many different areas. Our faculty includes professors who have previous experience in a diverse range of professions- Aerospace Engineer to former Disney Animator. Because of this, people all over  Nashville are looking to Lipscomb faculty, staff, and students as the city faces challenges that require a highly innovative and entrepreneurial mindset.

= Overview =

Lipscomb University is a place of innovation at it's core, but some of our innovative thinkers and innovative coursework gets buried, and is not easily seen around our campus community. The following page outlines the UIF Candidate Priorities regarding what we believe needs to be brought to our campus in order to improve the I&E culture at our University.

= Priority 1: I&E not limited by area of study - Power Hour! =

<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">All colleges & departments within Lipscomb University have innovation prioritized as one of their unique offerings to students. Each of the colleges and departments have centered their course work around teaching students to be innovative thinkers, setting them apart from graduates from other colleges. Innovation is part of the core of Lipscomb, but is often buried underneath heavy course loads. Students in the College of Business are encouraged to be entrepreneurial, and students in the College of Engineering are pushed to be innovative. Students in other departments, however, may not have such opportunities and encouragement to be innovative thinkers. 

<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Students may easily feel boxed in, whether they are aware of it or not. They see the word “innovation” and feel intimidated. They hear “entrepreneurship” and assume it’s only for business majors. Power Hour is a time to break them out of the box, and redfine innovation and entrepreneurship, presenting it as a mindset that all students can have- no matter what their major. 

<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Power Hour is a group of highly trained students who are innovative thinkers, collaborators, and campus change-makers. This group of students, called Innovation Connectors (IC’s), come into a university class (any area of study) and spend an hour going through curriculum which includes the following: 
<ul style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;">
<li>Hands-on Brainstorming exercises (resources provided- sticky notes, markers, white boards, etc.)</li>
<li>Team-Building Exercises </li>
<li>Intentional Innovation Connection (IC’s are trained to hear an idea from a student, and give suggestions for an on-campus point person who can help the idea develop and grow) </li>
</ul>

<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; background-color: transparent; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Power Hour will be advertised to Deans and professors, promoting innovation within the classroom. Bringing in a group of students (IC’s) would allow for a peer-to-peer learning and collaboration. The goal of each Power Hour session would be for all participating students to have a better idea of where they can go, what they can do, or who they can talk to when they have an idea related to innovation, entrepreneurship, or simply just wanting to be a change agent in their community. IC’s would be approachable students, who can connect with someone from any area of study, allowing for all students to feel that they can move forward with their ideas, inventions, plans, proposals, etc.

= Priority 2: I&E and it's legal aspects - Patent Club!  =

An introductory, patent/product development awareness meeting dedicated to simply exposing students to the world of product development and how to take their ideas and turn them into reality. It talks a little bit about patents and a little bit about how to take a product and take it all the way. Could partner with Nashville Inventors for this event so that not only people inside Lipscomb can learn, but people outside. Also, it can help enhance Nashville Inventor attendance. A local expert would come in and talk about what they’ve learned and there will also be COB people there to help students get connected with the business department if they’d want it. 

= Priority 3: I&E knowledge and skill advancement - Level Up!  =

Ever had that  feeling that you did not learn enough before graduating ? And also do not want to pursue a graduate degree or start over entirely? Well this is the solution! A major problem we discovered when conducting the Landscape Canvas is that there is very little conversation about innovation and entrepreneurship opportunities on campus outside those opportunities themselves. For example, I am in a program in the College of Business called Business as Mission. This program is geared toward equipping students to integrate theological and business knowledge to create sustainable solutions to pressing problems in the world. It flows from the belief that God invites people to partner with him in restoring the broken systems of the world and shattered relationships that naturally accompany them. I have been heavily involved in this program, but very few people outside of the College of Business have ever heard of it (and many in it as well). Thus this amazing opportunity for growth and development of innovative ideas is lost for many students simply because of lack of knowledge. 

Two additional pain points with this problem are lack of access to resources for students with ideas and the lack of belief in themselves. The latter is a major issue, and is one that is more the focus of Lydia’s project, Power Hour, above. The former, however, is one that is very important to recognize within the context of the WHAT IF??? problem. Simply stated, what if students with ideas had access to other students, faculty, alumni and other external university supporters with similar ideas?

Each of the colleges and departments have centered their course work around teaching students to be innovative thinkers, setting them apart from graduates from other colleges. Innovation is part of the core of Lipscomb, but is often buried underneath heavy course loads. Students in the College of Business are encouraged to be entrepreneurial, and students in the College of Engineering are pushed to be innovative. Students in other departments, however, may not have such opportunities and encouragement to be innovative thinkers.

IC’s would be approachable students, who can connect with someone from any area of study, allowing for all students to feel that they can move forward with their ideas, inventions, plans, proposals, etc.

An introductory, patent/product development awareness meeting dedicated to simply exposing students to the world of product development and how to take their ideas and turn them into reality. It talks a little bit about patents and a little bit about how to take a product and take it all the way. Could partner with Nashville Inventors for this event so that not only people inside Lipscomb can learn, but people outside. Also, it can help enhance Nashville Inventor attendance. A local expert would come in and talk about what they’ve learned and there will also be COB people there to help students get connected with the business department if they’d want it.

From contacting others, I had positive feedback for an informational session, and not as much around an actual club. Most people I’ve talked to are primarily interested in just gaining the information and moving on from there. Also, engineers are busy. Because of this, an informational session seems more of something students would appreciate more in engineering. Also from talking with the Nashville Inventors leaders, they are not super interested in driving a long way in order to hold their monthly meetings. However, I will talk to them more next week if more students are interested.

We have many different opportunities for students to intentionally engage in entrepreneurship and innovation on our campus, starting with the Entrepreneurship degree. Students can major in Entrepreneurship, which includes courses such as Entrepreneur Finance, Entrepreneur Marketing, and other ENT Special Topics Courses. Students may also choose to minor in Entrepreneurship, which includes courses such as Entrepreneurs Intro to Business, The Social Enterprise, or other Entrepreneurship related electives. Each of these courses are offered through Lipscomb’s Center for Entrepreneurship, which was founded in 2011 to provide students with more entrepreneurial opportunities on campus and in the Nashville community. 

<span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(29, 33, 38); background-color: transparent; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-position: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) are also promoted through on-campus clubs such as Collegiate Entrepreneurship Organization (CEO) or Baja Sae Team. Each of these on-campus organizations are student led, and offer students from many different areas of study the opportunity to engage in I&E on Lipscomb’s Campus. Though they are student-led, many faculty & staff members are heavily involved in these organizations, as they help students connect with individuals outside of the Lipscomb Community. Other I&E opportunities are shared with students through various newsletters that are sent out to students on a weekly or monthly basis. For example, the Office of Student Life sends out information about the many opportunities that students can engage in, some being directly I&E related, others being specifically recreational. Each college within the University sends out a newsletter to all of their students, advertising different opportunities student have to engage on and off campus. The College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Education, and many other departments each have unique opportunities to allow students to participate in I&E related activities.

The Kittrell Pitch competition allows students from any area of study to pitch their business idea to a panel of judges, giving students the opportunity to win cash prizes to fund their entrepreneurial endeavors. 3 Day Startup also allows for learning and engagement for many students. This is a new addition to Lipscomb’s Center for Entrepreneurship, and is the next step being taken to grow and improve Lipscomb’s I&E ecosystem.

These courses, however, may also offer students engagement with international experiences, such as communicating with startups in other countries, or going to visit startups across the globe.

We have many different opportunities for students to intentionally engage in entrepreneurship and innovation on our campus, starting with the Entrepreneurship degree. Students can major in Entrepreneurship, which includes courses such as Entrepreneur Finance, Entrepreneur Marketing, and other ENT Special Topics Courses. Students may also choose to minor in Entrepreneurship, which includes courses such as Entrepreneurs Intro to Business, The Social Enterprise, or other Entrepreneurship related electives. Each of these courses are offered through Lipscomb’s Center for Entrepreneurship, which was founded in 2011 to provide students with more entrepreneurial opportunities on campus and in the Nashville community.

Each of these on-campus organizations are student led, and offer students from many different areas of study the opportunity to engage in I&E on Lipscomb’s Campus. Though they are student-led, many faculty & staff members are heavily involved in these organizations, as they help students connect with individuals outside of the Lipscomb Community. Other I&E opportunities are shared with students through various newsletters that are sent out to students on a weekly or monthly basis. For example, the Office of Student Life sends out information about the many opportunities that students can engage in, some being directly I&E related, others being specifically recreational. Each college within the University sends out a newsletter to all of their students, advertising different opportunities student have to engage on and off campus. The College of Business, College of Engineering, College of Education, and many other departments each have unique opportunities to allow students to participate in I&E related activities.

This is a new addition to Lipscomb’s Center for Entrepreneurship, and is the next step being taken to grow and improve Lipscomb’s I&E ecosystem.
