Lingxuan is a senior at Smith College double majoring in Economics and Mathematics, with a Concentration in Global Financial Institutions. She spent her junior year abroad in London studying Finance and Economics. At Smith, Lingxuan is the Vice President of Smith College Investment Club, where she brainstorms events, leads valuation modeling sessions, and presents her internship experience on various panels. At LSE, she furthered her academic interest in development economics by serving as the Panel Manager of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank Panel during the 2016 LSE SU China Development Forum. During her summers, Lingxuan completed two summer internships in investment banking, led City Tour Programme as the Assistant Coordiantor during the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, and interned with the South Korean National Congress International Relations Department during her freshman summer. In her spare time, Lingxuan likes to arrange music and watch broadway musicals.

= Campus Overview =

Smith College is private women's liberal arts college in Northampton, Massachusetts. Founded in 1871, the college is well established in the arts and the humanities as well as the sciences, and has over 50 areas of study. The school also supports numerous extra-curricular and co-curricular opportunities as well as a number of services to aid students in achieving their diverse goals.

== Promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship ==

Student innovation and entrepreneurship at Smith College has recently begun gaining momentum in both available resources and demonstrated student interest. Smith has a number of courses and workshops, both interdepartmental and department-specific, that introduce the concepts of design thinking and entrepreneurship, allow students to use and experiment with these tools in hands-on settings, and build their creative confidence.  These curricular resources are supplemented by other extra-curricular opportunities such as various conferences, competitions, and student organizations that allow students to gain further exposure and enrich their innovative experiences. The recently established Conway Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship works hard to inspire and encourage students to engage in innovative ventures.

== Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship ==

As a liberal arts college, Smith has mostly focused on encouraging and supporting faculty as researchers and teachers. While this does allow innovation in terms of designing courses and workshops, there is little encouragement towards entrepreneurial ventures. Deeply academic individuals, the faculty demonstrates limited interest in these areas of work. However, a recently launched series of design thinking workshops for faculty, and the Sherrerd Center for Teaching and Learning show promise of an emerging I&E culture among the faculty. Further efforts to strengthen and support this transformation is necessary, however, in order to have the culture established and accepted.

== Facilitating university-industry collaboration ==

The Smith Career Development Office maintains a website, E-access, a platform for finding jobs and internships in industry. The office also notifies students of upcoming job and internship application deadlines or opportunities via regular emails. University-industry collaboration is also strengthened by field trips, conferences, and alumnae outreach. The academic departments also facilitate major-specific industry communication by forwarding information about opportunities to students. However, these opportunities are limited and do not accommodate a broad variety of academic and vocational interests.

== Engaging with regional and local economic development efforts ==

Smith College has limited engagement in regional and local development efforts, and shows little interest in it. Initiative is yet to be taken to launch such efforts.

Lingxuanli:

Amanda Lavond is a junior [[File:Amanda Lavond.jpeg|thumb|right|200px|Amanda Lavond.jpeg]] at Smith College studying architecture. While at Smith, she is the house president of Haven-Wesley, where she organizes house events to foster a strong house community. This year she is researching the use of design thinking in cartography. Originally from the Bay Area, Amanda was in Durham for the summer, interning at the North Carolina Museum of Art and also an architecture firm. Amanda appreciates the way design thinking and human-centered design has complemented her studies in architecture, and hopes to implement it into future designs. Mandira Marambe is a University innovation Fellow pursuing a BSc. in Engineering and Minor in Physics at Smith College, [[File:Mandira Marambe.jpg|thumb|Mandira Marambe.jpg]]Massachusetts. She is part of a circle of five UIFs at Smith, and has also worked with design thinking methodologies in the classroom.In her spare time, Mandira volunteers with the Science Outreach Program, is on the editorial board for an online journal, and is involved with several student organizations on campus.

Having grown up in Sri Lanka, she loves sunshine and spicy food. She is also an avid reader, puzzle enthusiast, and enjoys most kinds of creative stimulation (writing, DIYs, etc). Mandira is a strong believer in spending her time doing what she loves, and hopes to follow her passions to wherever they lead her.
