At TU, Layla channels her passion for innovation and creativity through her work in TEDx and the NOVA fellowship. In her freetime, Layla enjoys studying art, music, and creative writing, often using her identity and travel experiences as a source of inspiration in her work.

Layla proves a genuine knack for equality through her involvement in TU’s sexual violence prevention programming as well as her executive position in Tulsa Democrats, a club on campus that sponsors events to promote civic engagement. As the daughter of an Iraqi immigrant, Layla has a special interest in issues of immigration and international economic policy and plans to take a semester abroad in 2019. In turn, Layla’s motivation to become a University Innovation Fellow stems from her belief in the private sector’s role in solving our greatest global challenges.

If needed, Layla can be found wandering around public parks petting dogs, as well as local coffee shops.

History

Uncharted was co-founded in Boulder, Colorado by Teju Ravilochan, Tyler Hartung, and Daniel Epstein, with additional help from Nikhil Dandavati and Vladimir Dubovskiy in January 2009. By May of 2010, Uncharted had run its first global institute, which included contributions from 15 countries. The organization continued to grow and by May 2015 the company created a new financial plan switching from a revenue sharing model to a sustainable and scalable revenue model. In June of 2016 Uncharted ran their first issue specific program the “Early Childhood Accelerator” through a partnership with Gary Community Investments. In 2017 they created, and ran the Future Cities Accelerator. This is a program designed to fastrack solutions to aid impoverished people in US cities. They are also currently working on a “Food Access Program”  in Denver, Colorado to provide healthy food to low-income communities. This growth has lead them to re-brand the company in July of 2017.

Uncharted solves global issues, including Cities & Urbanization, Economic Enpowerment, Education, Environmental Sustainability, Healthcare, and Justice & Civil Liberties. An incubator for-profit and non-profit organizations intended to impact top  social and environmental problems such as poverty, hunger and health.  The institute recruits entrepreneurs from all around the world through their Global, East Africa  and Mexico  Institutes. The Unreasonable Institute hosts a 5 week program for a dozen teams where the teams work and live in the same house together. Each team has multiple mentors and are provided with mentor “dating” and coaching to make sure each team gets the best possible mentorship. At the same time, the institute holds Investor Days to help the projects secure funding.

The Unreasonable Institute recruits globally and fund their teams through a crowd funding platform so that individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds can join the team. As of now, they have had teams representing 37 countries and have opened their institute in Mexico (Aguascalientes, Mexico) and East Africa (Kampala, Uganda).

Additionally, the Unreasonable Institute involves a “live-in” component which is different from most incubators. The teams which are admitted live and work in the same house, ensuring that innovation and inspiration are a 24/7 ordeal.

= Impact Achieved =

 The institute has worked with 82 ventures in 5 years. 71 of those vetures are still active, and 63 have raised $37.88 Million. Some notable examples are [http://kopokopo.com/ Kopo Kopo], a tool for small merchants around the world, and [http://www.aquaphytex.us/ Aquaphytex], a water filtration system involving plants.

Unreasonable @Scale is a program aiming to start 100 Unreasonable Institutes in 100 countries by 2020. In order to launch @Scale, the Unreasonable institute is piloting a program in Mexico and in East Africa.  Currently, these two institutes are managed by teams which were hand-selected through the Global Institute. Currently, there is no direct way to bring this resource on campus.
