Lara von Däniken is a former University Innovation Fellow who holds a Bachelors in Design Management Internationalfrom Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), and a Masters in International Business from Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). Design Management refers to creative problem solving, innovating new products, services, experiences and systems, as well as and improving user experiences in all types of organizations through a system-oriented approach. The International Business program equips students with the necessary skills to advise multinational corporations on topics such as internationalization, mergers, corporate strategy and transformation.

Lara grew up close to Basel and moved to Lucerne as soon as her studies at HSLU started. Already during the first year of the Bachelors program, she was exposed to the University Innovation Fellows program during a public event called “Design Manager’s Talk” at HSLU. She then successfully participated in the UIF program from which she graduated as a fellow in 2020.

Her passion is to solve complex problems and challenges in an international environment, surrounded by people from different cultures and backgrounds. This is also why she chose to work in different countries, such as Singapore, Ecuador or the UK and speaks six different languages.

Apart from her academic career, Lara started her professional career at a Swiss insurance, followed by a Junior Consultant role focused on customer experience and innovation. Then, she worked in Cloud Strategy for UK-based SMEs, and for a multinational consumer goods company in the area of organization design and people change. Today, Lara works in Strategy Consulting at Accenture, in the area of operating model and organization design within the CFO & Enterprise Value practice. = Four Projects to Address Key Issues at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts =

As part of this year's cohort, we will outline four projects that we will encourage innovation and entrepreneurship at HSLU (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts).

1# Project Name: The HSLU Festival
Person in charge: Lara von Däniken
Key tactics to bring this project to life
1. All deans and the director of HSLU must see the added value in the event and agree on the realisation of it.

2. A team in charge of organizing the event must be found, preferably with students from all different departments to bring in all perspectives. This team can then conduct research into the needs of the students to make sure that the event will be interesting to them and successful.

3. A budget, as well as an outline of the event, must be pitched to the board in order to get approval.

4. As soon as approved, the event can be further planned into all details, and eventually, put into reality.

5. After the event, it is advisable to analyze what went well and what could be improved. The team in charge should also evaluate if it makes sense to repeat this event, and if yes, with what frequency.

Cohort 2017: Vinzenz Leuenberger, Jonathan Grubenmann, Michael Huonder, Philipp Hamm
The Five Step Strategy for Lucerne University
We have encountered three priorities that we will develop over the coming semesters to promote Innovation & Entrepreneurship at Lucerne University.

Venture Capital Movement
We are building a Venture Capital Fund that helps students to get funding for their idea. At the same time, the get the chance to experience and learn about Lean Startup while invest the won budget during a startup course at University.

The Plan To Action:

1. Refine / Polish the idea and gain insights about the expectations of the target group

2. Setup a communication strategy with Website and Flyers to validate the interest and inform stakeholders

3. Get in touch with faculty to discuss options of development and to gain the funding needed

4. Recruit the needed commitee for the VC Fund

5. Contact sponsors for collaboration

Startup Ecosystem Map Switzerand
We help students and entrepreneurs in Switzerland to find the resources within our ecosystem by providing them with a map that not only shows all the assets, but also puts them in a chronological relevance. What does the Swiss startup ecosystem offer in terms of incubation? What in terms of funding? Where can you go to to get your funding?

The Plan To Action:

1. Research on current offerings

2. Find the assets that would be relevant for the Ecosystem Map

3. Build MVP / Mockup for the map with easy tools

4. Gain attention from the stakeholders

5. What is the business model? How do we assure the right data?

The Student Project Platform
We are building a platform that helps students to find projects for their final thesis on master and bachelor (undergraduate / graduate) level.

The Plan To Action:

1. Get support from the board of directors from our campus

2. Find a easy way to integrate the platform into our current university ecosystem

3. Do a first test run for projects in February 2019

4. Track the results and get more funding for next iteration

At the Lucerne University, innovation and entrepreneurship is mostly promoted by a cross-departmental organization called Smartup (https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/wirtschaft/campus/smart-up/), which gives the students the tools to invent, build and spin-out their business idea. Furthermore, Smartup offers several open spaces where students have access to mentors, toolboxes and promotional events and even coworking places(https://blog.hslu.ch/smart-up/coworking/). In addition, these spaces serve as a place where venture capitalists and students come together to realize business ideas.
The students that want more exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship, can find several offers on the Lucernce University campus, such as the student-initiated projects, namely Future Forum Lucerne (http://www.futureforum.ch/), the club Innovatis (https://www.innovatis-club.ch/), Women in Business (https://www.hslu.ch/de-ch/wirtschaft/institute/ifz/finance-banking/womens-business-and-diversity-management/womens-business/agenda/) or TEDxLucerne University (https://www.tedxhochschuleluzern.ch). These projects serve as a base for networking and learning.

Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship:

Maybe the question should be: how can innovation and entrepreneurship be taught in university modules, when the faculty body does not have the mindset needed?

At the Lucerne University, faculty member are not excluded from participating in innovation and entrepreneurship programs that are offered on campus. Consequently, our faculty members possess the necessary abilities and mindset to promote these invaluable assets.

Actively supporting the university technology transfer function:

As of January 24, 2018, the Lucerne University does not have a technology transfer office.

Facilitating university-industry collaboration:

Smartup, the Lucerne University organization previously mentioned above, has already supported multiple spin-offs, especially including startups in the engineering and digital marketing industry.
Especially the engineering and architecture departement managaged to build up collaborations with partners in the industry, that allow hundrets of strudents each semester to work on collaborating projects. After all, every students bachelor thesis is a co-production of graduate and industry partner.

Engaging with regional and local economic development efforts:
