== Overview of Current Priorities ==
The students of Oregon Tech have identified four priorities to pursue. The first priority is to found a Business and Innovation club on campus to promote student business ventures. The second priority is to break down and explain the school's budget to students in an effort to alleviate tensions between students and the administration. The third priority is to make the Klamath Falls campus a more environmentally friendly campus. The fourth priority is to have the Klamath lake be used by the community.
== 2022 Cohort Priorities ==

=== Priority One: Business and Innovation Club ===
During their research, the 2022 cohort of Fellows found that there was not an organization on campus that could be accessed year round to help students with their business ventures; there is a regional competition that helps to promote innovation, but it only happens once a year. Therefore, they have prioritized the founding of a Business and Innovation club on campus. The goal of this club will be to promote the business of activities and nourish innovative solutions to problems on the campus.
=== Priority Two: Budget Breakdown ===
In Spring of 2020, the faculty at Oregon Tech went on a strike because of a failure to reach an agreeable contract with the administration. Nearly all of the students felt that the administration was being unfair to the faculty, and that the student tuition money was not being spent well. Ever since this incident, there have been continually high tensions between students and the administration. The 2022 cohort wants to reduce this by obtaining current financial records, analyzing them, and presenting their findings to students. The goal is that if students know exactly where money is going, they will feel more comfortable about how the administration runs the school.
=== Priority Three: A Sustainable Campus ===
The Klamath Falls campus of Oregon Tech is painted as a very environmentally friendly campus; it has solar panels, geothermal wells, and an excellent renewable energy engineering program. However, the wells are inefficient and cost more than original estimates. The newest building on campus, the Center for Excellence in Engineering and Technology, is not certified as a sustainable building, even though it could have been done easily at the time of construction. The goal is to obtain information on how much energy the school is actually creating, and whether or not new sources of renewable energy can be created for help sustainably power the rest of the community.
=== Priority Four: The Klamath Lake ===
The Klamath Lake is a large lake located at the north end of Klamath Falls. It does not see much use however, due to a lack of infrastructure, algae bloom, and poisonous plants in the lake. The goal is to work with local businesses to turn this lake into a center for tourist activity and bring people to Klamath Falls.

== Background ==
The Oregon Institute of Technology is a polytechnic institute with its main campus in Klamath Falls, Oregon. It was founded in 1947 to re-educate World War II veterans. There are four main departments: business, engineering, healthcare, and communication.
== Promoting Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

=== Undergraduate Courses ===

==== 1) Senior Project Sequence ====
Engineering and Business majors must complete a sequence of three classes titled “Senior Project.” This is a year long sequence that involves a hands-on project chosen by the student. This project is encouraged to be innovative and put to use all of the skills that they have learned at Oregon Tech. Students may work with local businesses to solve problems that they encounter. Some students have used this project to start small businesses that still exist years later.

==== 2) Major Specific Courses ====
Nearly all major specific courses at Oregon Tech have a lab class or some other hands-on component present. Students will often have one or two lab classes a term. This gives students the tools to be confident in their skills in a field and come up with innovative solutions. The business classes such as Marketing I work with local businesses to help innovate solutions to their problems.
=== Organizations ===
=== Infrastructure ===

==== 1) CEET Makers Space ====
The CEET Makers Space is a new lab that was put on campus when the CEET building (Center for Excellence in Engineering and Technology) was built in 2021. It has lab space for students, along with several 3D printers that are free to use for students and staff.

==== 2) Cornett Building ====
Cornett is the primary engineering building on campus, and it is filled with workspaces and labs for students. Students are allowed to use these labs, and they are filed with resources like welding equipment, 3D printers, a carbon fiber printer, CNC equipment, and more. It is all free for students to use, and many labs have raw materials as well.
== Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==
Faculty are encouraged to participate in research and to pursue other industry connections. However, there is no official resources on campus to help them.
== Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration ==

=== 1) MECOP ===
MECOP stands for “Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program.” This is a west coast program that pairs engineering students with companies for two six-month internships. Many Oregon Tech students participate in this program because it gives them a full year of industry experience before leaving college. Professors also teach students skills they will need knowing that many of them will participate in this program.
=== 2) Consideration for Professors ===
One of the main considerations for hiring professors is the amount of industry experience an individual has. Many Oregon Tech classes are hands-on, and its professors teach actual strategies used in industry. Several professors continue to work in industry as they teach; this allows them to have first-hand knowledge of the tools used in industry and teach them to students. This gives students an excellent preparation of industry skills.
== Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts ==

=== Catalyze Klamath ===
Catalyze Klamath is a local competition that invites entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas and compete for funding for those ideas. These are businesses that will be developed and nurtured in the Klamath basin.

Hello! I found this discussion note very informative, since this is something that I have struggled with in the past (where after creating a club, I couldn't keep it running and this was in high school). I think this is very important to remember, as when we create whatever project under UIF, we have to be mindful of how such creation of the project will continue onward for others to keep up. Because when I was in high school, a classmate and I created an initiative that would reform the school with the help of student representatives from different "groups" of the school. While me and the fellow co-founder were motivated to keep the initiative going, we found that it was difficult for the other members we invited to join to continue the initiative after we graduated (to which they did not).
Something I like to think about with regards to other people succeeding the initiative, is how we can "light the torches" of other students in the way of how we (the UIF cohorts) were inspired to start the initiative in the first place. This may come as a challenge for some of us, but I hope that this will become successful in the future for all!

== Succession Interviews ==

Thank you for the good ideas for a succession plan! I think every new organization hits that point where it's difficult to choose who to continue an initiative. In my honest opinion, the interview method works wonders for ensuring the survival of an initiative. While it may be less popular as a democratic vote, it does ensure that successors are prepared for the challengers that may face them. A little bit of discontent is worth it to ensure the survival of an important initiative on your campus.

I agree that on a small scale, the interview process is best. It ensures that the club will go to someone who wants it to thrive. I wonder how well this would work if the club is very divided on the direction to go.
