UTEC is a proposal of public education, with a technological profile, committed to the expansion of the higher education supply to the interior of Uruguay, fostering the link with the productive environment and the promotion of the country's social and cultural development.

To be the Uruguayan public university of Higher Technological Education, recognized nationally and internationally for its commitment to continuous quality improvement, equal opportunities and innovative capacity of its educational and research offer, which forms people with a creative and entrepreneurial professional profile in strategic areas, for an equitable and inclusive social and economic development.

==Our mission:==
To educate, train and coach high level professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators in order to generate, transform, transfer and articulate knowledge to promote and boost the technological, economic and social development of Uruguay.

=Promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship =

At UTEC, there can be found many workshops focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as undergraduate courses that are focused on science and engineering, the teachers encourage their students to innovate and to have an entrepreneurial perspective when making the projects.

The main event of innovation and entrepreneurship is the Innovation Week, which takes place in the month of October and gathers companies from public and private areas joining forces alongside local high schools and their students, as well as other higher education institutions and universities, with the special collaboration of the Finnish university JAMK, working all together in order to discover new ways of innovation, bring a wide spectrum of careers together to make a project, instead of each career doing the task separately. And also, this projects will have a great impact in the community.

=International Relations Unit =

The International Relations Unit promotes and maintains links with foreign institutions and organizations that strengthen academic and research activity through networks of universities, research centers and international organizations, academic exchanges and joint programs.

Internationalization in its broadest sense and integrated to management, allows universities to be part of international trends in education and learning, as well as to provide all their students with the necessary resources to make a positive contribution to society.

=UTEC in the Territory=

The Regional Technological Institutes (RTIS) are the manifestation of UTEC in the territory. They are located on different cities in the country, based on the regional needs for higher education in each city. They are the centers that manage the activities in the region; in order to create a dialogue with the environment, through a strong decentralized profesional path. 

When UTEC was first created its main focus was to decentralize centers of higher education in the country from the capital. At the time all uruguayan students could mostly do if they wanted to pursue a college career was to move to Montevideo, and study there. This drastically changed with the arrival of UTEC. Its first institution was built in the southwest part of the country, Fray Bentos. Since then on, all RTIs built have been following the same path and have been designed to fit the communities they were built around.

Since then, he has worked as part of the languages program and has participated in different projects and activities with the University of Wisconsin Madison, the Tampere University of Applied Sciences in Finland and the University of Alberta in Canada.
Nowadays, Fontaine is in charge of the instructional design of a postgraduate diploma offered by utec about the design of learning environments.

==Bio==
Prof. John Fontaine is a University professor at Universidad tecnológica del Uruguay (UTEC) who specializes in instructional design.

John got his degree of English Teacher from I.P.A (Instituto de Profesores Artigas) and years later joined the UTEC family in 2016 after getting his postgraduate diploma in Learning Disabilities from Universidad Católica del Uruguay. Since then, he has worked as part of the languages program and has participated in different projects and activities with the University of Wisconsin Madison, the Tampere University of Applied Sciences in Finland and the University of Alberta in Canada.

Currently, he develops Massive open online courses focusing on the development of 21st century skills and is also a professor in the design of a Diploma in Learning Environments that UTEC offers.
