Jessica is University Innovation Fellow and graduate from Menlo College. She graduated in May 2019 with a Bachelors degree in Marketing. She currently works in Product Marketing in the tech industry. She now brings her experiences from UIF & design thinking methodologies to her day-to-day work!

During her undergrad, Jessica was a part of the very first cohort to be named as University Innovation Fellows at Menlo College and one of the first groups to represent a business school within the program. She was heavily involved as a change maker on her campus - from creating Menlo's first makerspace known as The Innovation Center to leading the Oaks Innovation Club, a student-led entrepreneurship club, to organizing community events on campus such as Startup Weekend Silicon Valley and TedX. She is passionate about empowering others and enjoys mentoring new fellows.

In her free time, you can find her on the California coast enjoying a day at the beach with her dog, traveling to new places, playing pickleball, or spending time with family & friends.
== Strategy #1: Creating Space for Creativity
==

Creating a space for Innovation and Entrepreneurship on the Menlo College campus is difficult because of our small size. Menlo College has a little less than 1000 students and already uses up almost all of its space. That is why we thought of setting up temporary innovation spots outside around campus.

            We would stake out a location on campus and during certain parts of the day, we would set up an outside creative space. We would have a shed nearby that contains chairs, tables, white boards, music speakers, bean bags. We would also have a crate that is full of resources for the students, markers, sticky notes, pens, some days we would bring pizza, fresh fruit, and beverages.

            We feel that a creative space outside, with the trees, fresh air, and something that would offer a new scene rather than be inside, like every classroom, would ignite more creative thinking.

== Strategy #2: Bringing Awareness to On-Campus Resources ==

Menlo College has a limited of already established, on-campus resources related to entrepreneurship and innovation. However, the resources Menlo currently provides its students with are underutilized. One area students should utilize more is the Oral and Communications center. Next, by adding a specific space for innovation on campus, students will be able to have an area to cultivate their own business ventures. In addition, clubs and other campus organizations can put on events and skill-building workshops in our space for innovation on campus. This will bring students together and excit them to pursue their entrepreneurial visions. Another area of interest could be partnering with the Academic Success Center, where we could organize game night challenges related to acamdeia and have peer tutors as well as other faculy be guest judges.

== Strategy #3: Strengthening Curriculum and On-Campus Clubs ==

Menlo College is currently undergoing a revamp in part of their education curriculum, specifically in regards to the entrepreneurship major. A committee at Menlo is thinking about possibly developing a course at Menlo that would combine aspects of "social innovation" (improving society) and entrepreneurship, with the goal of eventually incorporating it in other classes. One concept that would be covered in this potential "social innovation entrepeneurship" course is using entrepreurship to solve problems with California's affordable housing crisis or climate change.

Another idea that is being discussed at Menlo is incorporating "themes" into the curriculum to help students find and develop their personal passions with business - if you like technology, you would take "technology entrepreneurship". Another idea is combining some class, so biology would combine with a business course to become "biotechnology" or something.

== Strategy #4: Business Vocabulary and other skills necessary for business ==

UIF gives us the perfect platform to be able to share what we are about. The fact that Menlo College is located in the heart of Silicon Valley means that we are surrounded by all types of business. Design think is a great tool we have been able to use, and as a group we have identified different areas our campus needs work on. This tool is not only perfect for our campus, but it is also a great skill to take onto the workforce. A way to teach the new vocabulary and skills would be to host annual events and workshops that would enable our students to have a much more in depth and better understanding of what it means to empathize, research, analyze, prototype, and most importantly, will teach students not to be afraid of failure.

== Strategy #1: Creating Space for Creativity
==

== Strategy #2: Bringing Awareness to On-Campus Resources ==

== Strategy #3: Strengthening Curriculum and On-Campus Clubs ==

==

== Strategy #2: Bringing Awareness to On-Campus Resources ==

== Strategy #3: Strengthening Curriculum and On-Campus Clubs ==

== Watch Me Now: An Oak's Guide to Change ==

== Strategy #1: Creating Space for Creativity
==

== Strategy #2: Bringing Awareness to On-Campus Resources ==

== Strategy #3: Strengthening Curriculum and On-Campus Clubs ==

== Overview ==

Menlo College is a small private school located in Atherton, California. With a little over 800 students, Menlo College offers degrees in business and psychology. Being in the heart of Silicon Valley, Menlo College provides its students a unique approach to business: being able to see and learn about companies, such as Facebook and Google, who are just a drive away from our campus. However, becuase Menlo College is such a small school, the overall resources for innovation cannot be found. Having the influence of such great entrepreneurial businesses around us is not enough to implement our own ideas as students without the necessary materials, mentors and an area to foster creativity. Therefore, the UIF Leadership Circle of Menlo College looks forward to identifying the gaps in our ecosystem, which need to be strengthen in order for Menlo College students to fully embrace entrepreneurship and innovation.

== Student Entrepreneurship ==

Menlo College students are passionate about entrepreneurship and innovation; except, there are only minimal assets for them to utilize on campus. Entrepreneruship is offered as a major for those pursuing a business degree and is a growing major at Menlo College. The large presence of clubs on campus gives students the extracurricular opportunities to explore their areas of interest, such as the Pioneer Club, an organization strictly designed for entrepreneurs and creative thinkers alike. Menlo College Office of Career Services hosts a number of career orientated workshops, such as how to create a cover letter and resume workshop to learning how to set up a Linkedin profile; these are just a few of the events Menlo College offers to support entrepreneurship in their studnts. In addition, this was the first year Menlo participated in the Hult Prize competition, a start-up accelorator for social entrepreneruship. With the success of this competition, Menlo College is looking to expand on-campus challenges.

== Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

Being in the heart of Silicon Valley, most of our faculty members are not just professors; they have either experienced the world of business or are currently still in the work force. Many professors share their entrepreneurial experiences in class, whether it is indirect or directly tied to entrepreneurship. On our campus, Menlo College is grateful to be backed by administration and faculty, who see the potential and need for expansion into entrepreneurship and innovation.

== University Technology Transfer Function ==

Our school does not have a technology transfer office.

== University - Industry Collaboration ==

As an undergraduate school, Menlo College does not host the amount of research as a gradaute univeristy. Many professors conduct research, furthering their professional area of study, but there work is not directly linked to students. As a possible solution, Menlo College can partner in collaboration efforts with Stanford University and other local univerisities for students to see and utilize the resources in their surrounding environment.

== Regional and Local Economic Development ==

Menlo College has a very low regional and local ecomonic development. Possibly due to the fact that our campus and its students do not have access to a specific entrepreneruship deparment or designated leader, there is a lack of awareness surrounding entrepreneruship and innovation. Ultimately, this deprives students from pursuing their innovative business ideas as well as learning the steps to fully develop their ideas.
Our school does not have a technology transfer office.

== University - Industry Collaboration ==

Menlo College currently has a very low regional and local ecomonic development. Possibly due to the fact that our campus and its students do not have access to a specific entrepreneruship leader and deparment, therefore, there is a lack of awareness surrounding entrepreneruship and innovation at Menllo College. Ultimately, this deprives students from pursuing their innovative business ideas as well as the learning the steps to develop their ideas.
What the UIF cohort would come to realize is that events become tremendously more attractive to participants if they are marketed as mysterious and exclusive, making them stand out amongst an already crowded campus listing.

Macy and her team dug deep and decided to promote their next event through business cards. They ordered simple cards with an “X” on one side and the time and location on the other professionally printed. Nothing else. No group name. No additional information. Members of the UIF team would personally hand these out to classmates while simply adding “Don’t tell anyone”.

So now, what once was an open forum event at a local bar is now a mysterious meet-up that requires a card to get into and is supposed to be kept secret. Turnout was almost 100% and the event lasted 2 additional hours because the dialogue was so vibrant. Macy’s plan was a resounding success.

== WHY IT WORKED ==

From Macy’s experience, having a campus filled with happy students cultivates creativity because more students will be willing to take advantage of on-campus resources. When students utilize those resources, they are giving themselves the opportunity to be creative and innovative with their ideas. Consider these 3 points when initiating happiness on your campus:

First, give students a platform to be heard. Some schools offer specific meetings or events, where students can voice their opinions. However, the hardest part with these meetings is getting a variety of people to show up. Try creating a special invitation or personally reaching out to invite a student. The more voices in attendance means more perspectives that can address the pessimism on your campus.

Second, don’t just talk about the problem, generate a solution. For example, by the end of the meeting, make a goal of having three solutions for three problems. If not, you are just going to create a space for complaints and additional negativity. Thinking of solutions on spot will also further students’ ability to be creative and innovative in solving problems they thought would never be solved.

Finally, do not be afraid to do small, silly things to grab students’ attention. Not only will you be making a lasting impression, but you’ll also create a great conversation starter that could catch on across campus!

== BACKLASH ==

Every work we do we find some flaws and a few counterblasts. While promoting for the events Macy and her cohort faced some challenges and counterblasts. Some of them were inviting people for the event when they are conducting it for the first time was the most typical task they ever faced. Inviting in the sense meeting them personally and distributing cards to them to get involved in the meeting.

The next one was during the distribution of T-shirts they printed for promoting the event. The funniest thing is that some people thought that the T-Shirts are some sort of drug reference. Especially, when she entered the male rooms.

Macy and her cohort also conducted makeathon and they hardly got thirty students .From these experiences they learned and realised that how hard is that to get people connected to makeathon like things and what steps they should take to make such events more effective. Which faculty is helpful, more interactive and who’s not. In the end they discovered who’s fake , who’s true and who would risk it all for them.

== TAKEAWAYS ON PESSIMISM AND CREATIVITY ==

Creating an environment that is focused on safety, freedom, autonomy, and interconnectedness fuels happiness within individuals. The feeling of being in control over your classes and course schedules, for example, are markers that can contribute to a healthier and happier environment for students.

According to Macy, the pessimism that had overcome her campus was primarily attributed to a lack of unity and organization on campus. The voices of many often times goes unheard because a platform to share thoughts and concerns does not exist for all students. Developing a form of communication that allows students from diverse backgrounds to be heard, however, can be an effective tool to further improve a campus’ well-being.

Happy students are the ones that will be creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial. These elements are incredibly fulfilling because it embraces originality and fosters a sense of uniqueness within individuals. Creating happier, and thus more creative students, therefore, provides a pathway to grow and can lead students towards achieving success both inside and outside the classroom.
