==Strategic Priority One:==

===Shaw University Research Center===
Shaw University is a growing institution with a great life science institute. Unfortuanetly, we currently do not have a research center available to faculty and staff on campus. We are proposing the idea that regardless of academic studies, students have to complete research. An actual facility on campus would be beneficial in helping students gain research experience on campus. We have the idea of opening the research facility with the goal of researching mental health issues in the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People Of Color) community. While interviewing students on campus, we found that mental health issues were very prominent within students and there are not many beneficial resources for students on campus. The research that will be conducted at the research center will be aimed at finding ways to help students cope with their mental health issues. The research that students conduct will bring publicity and funding to the university. Ultimately, the research center will be beneficial to students and the university in general.

==Strategic Priority Two:==

===Experiential Course===
This design thinking course will be offered one semester out of the academic school year at Shaw University. Students can receive a certification in design thinking once completing the course. Students that are certified in design thinking will be a better candidate for future employers. This course will be a school wide introduction to innovation and entrepreneurship to students and staff. In this course, students will also learn the importance of inclusivity through innovation. It is common that with various design and innovative projects, minorities, disabled and LGBTQIA+ people are often not taken into consideration.

== Strategic Priority Three: ==

=== Mental Wellness Week ===
For this trial wellness week, we will provide free mental health screenings by guidance counselors on campus. If the trial mental wellness week exceeds our expectations we will offer mental health screenings weekly. These screenings will not be limited to students, it would also be available to faculty and staff. We would also invite skilled professionals from various areas to give mini sessions varying from Tai Chi and Yoga to kickboxing and martial arts. We would also have pottery classes or flower arranging sessions, anything that relaxes the mind. To make sure that all students have the opportunity to attend these events, wellness events and activities are hosted outside of class time. In the past, we have had wellness days that took place during class time which prohibited students from attending which defeated the purpose of the wellness day. <!--DO NOT EDIT BELOW THIS LINE -->

Janellodom06: /* Educational Gap In Low Income Communities */

It´s completely true that education is the best tool that you could give to someone to help him or her rise. It´s a real pity that most of the time, higher education costs a lot of money. We as a society should help others fund their education in order to give them an opportunity to develop themselves and create new opportunities for our world as well.

I completely agree with the above comment. One of my friends from high school struggled with finding scholarships and resources in order to go to college. I think scholarships should be focussed on disadvantaged communities and no one should be denied opportunities because of their circumstances. College may not be for everyone, but every person should have equal access to higher education or education after high school. -norrisck

Hi Norrisck! I wrote the first comment and I could not agree more with you. Even though Higher education is not for everyone, all of us should have the opportunity to get in it. Money should never be an obstacle. We need more scholarships, especially from our governments. -Constanza

I support the fact that the government should be the backing organ for free education so that it is accessible to everybody. Education can lead to emancipation and we should not restrict this to people that have money. - Radhika

== Educational Gap In Low Income Communities ==

There is a massive issue in the economic gap against our marginalized communities. However, because this negative spiral exists it also provides these communities less opportunities to educate and improve their livelihood. In being an individual who came from these communities and was lucky enough to have a good support system around me and being funded by scholarships, it has truly opened my eyes to the injustice and systemic oppression we face.

The honest truth is that I would not have had the courage to consider attending my university if I had not received several scholarships. Many youth in these neighborhoods are not even exposed to these opportunities, I had to scrounge to find these things for myself. I believe being able to provide youth with these opportunities is the not only beneficial morally, but also economically.

If we were to decrease the economic gap it would add millions of dollars to our economy. Being able to provide not only to our economy but to the well being of all people, is part of our duty. -Anthony Moody IV
Decreasing the conomic gap would help both citizens and the ecomnomy. -Jerome Thomas-Glass

Receiving multiple scholarships made it possible for me to go to college and relieve the extreme pressures of student loans and finances on my mother. Usually coming from a low-income community, loans are highly encouraged when discussing the options of paying for college tuition. - Janell Odom

== Advantageous Scholarships ==

It is true that low income students don't receive as much attention as they should. If i didn't have the assistance I wouldn't be where I am right now. Taking advantage of this great opportunity, but it still a struggle to pay for school every now and then and I truly believe that creating one for low income that provides a fair amount of money to make getting their education easier would be so helpful. It would lessen the entering higher in debt every year and needing to work jobs and many hours so all of that energy can be indulged in having more time to study and even innovate. They would be able to unlock more potential they have hidden in them and not make them stress and and have a can't do it attitude.

== Combating the gap between rich and poor ==

Making education accessible to all is the need of the hour. There are many children unable to study due to their financial conditions. Many out there dreaming about being educated. While the others not valuing it enough. In the ever evolving world the gap between the rich and poor has widened. This has led to many disadvantaged communities not being able to acquire education .Ironically , the only solution to combat this widened gap in our society is through education. Thus, I would like to propose that education in elementary and middle school be made free of cost or atleast be provided with a fair amount of concession. And in the higher education I would suggest that the students would be given scholarships based on their interest and desire to study .Also lowering the high standards of qualification in the examinations conducted to provide scholarships has to be put into action.
