There is a general consensus that there could be more participation in and knowledge about the Changemaking aspect of campus. This program would help facilitate and encourage participation for students. To explain further, the Changemaker Trek would be a program in which students are rewarded an end prize for participating in changemaking. 

<span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(29, 33, 38); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As of now, the specific requirements are a work in progress. We are envisioning some of the requirements being things like students going to deisgn-thinking workshops, participating in Changemaker Student Committee Meetings, entering into the Changemaker Challenge, etc. We will continue to work on and finalize the requirements in the future.

One idea proposed was that students who complted the Trek would be awarded the title of “Changemaker Scholar” and would be given a pin to wear at graduation, as well as a special announcement at the ceremony. Others have proposed that going to the Ashoka U conference would be a great ending prize, yet others see that this should be a requirement in the actual Trek itself. Our team is working on finalizing the requirements and prizes, and we cannot wait to share! <span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(29, 33, 38); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Once we have these finalized and want to get the ball rolling, we will meet with various important faculty on campus. We will formulate a 3-5 year plan about how this could be integrate into the students’ time here on campus. Furthermore, we have a marketing strategy for the Trek. The poster would be designed like a treasure map. The map would have various “X” points on it that describe what the student does at each one. At the end of the path, there will be a picture of treasure explaining the prize for completion.

==== Connect a network of motivated students ====

Connect a network of motivated students interested in innovation to be the student representatives for our USD Changemaker Identity. USD Thread: Our idea is to model a component of the nonprofit organization called Thread at our university. Students would apply to the program both as current student leaders and incoming first year students. 100 students would be selected into the program. Every month a group of 10 students randomly assigned to a different group every month would meet to discuss a specific topic related to social justice, innovation, and the USD sense of community both on campus and off campus. After 10 dinners and discussions with a new group of 10 people, we will have a large dinner with all 100 participants of USD Thread to discuss their ideas and findings with the administration. As a sociology major I know that tackling most social justice issues starts with a conversation and informing people of different perspectives. This idea of Thread is to connect a diverse student body to identify with our changemaker identity. We have prototyped a similar model to Thread with a Changemaker event called "Dinner with Strangers". The discussions have always been very engaging and the students feel very connected after having the space to talk about important issues. I think expanding this event with more structure and purpose would greatly contribute to building connections among a diverse student body.

==== Provide concrete opportunities to engage in the ideas behind changemaking through the Changemaker Student Committee ====

Through the Changemaker Student Committee, interested students will have the opportunity to learn the ideas behind Human Centered Design through taking action on the exisiting projects within the Chanegmaker Hub (i.e: My Story). Students will build community with other passionate individuals as they go through the process of planning and implementing a project that meets a need on our campus. In addition, the Changemaker Student Committee serves as a space for students who are not familiar with changemaking or social justice issues to come and explore different options to help them discover what they are most passionate about.

==== Connect student leaders ====

To connect student leaders we have decided to create a Changemaker Student Core. This Core allows leaders of Student run organizations with similar mindsets to work together and encourage collaboration and increased involvement. With student leaders working together we can ensure that social innovation and entrepreneurship events are better publicized and also better attended. With a shared calendar we can make sure that events do not overlap allowing students to get involved with as much as possible on campus. We will also work with Associated Students to make sure student voice is heard. We will make sure there is a strong connection between associated students and the Changemaker Hub as both can strongly benefit from each others support.

==== Roadmap for Student Involvement ====

Market to students through an independent forum discussing opportunities that students can get involved in. Students will be able to promote, discuss, and actively engage in conversation about meaningful passions and common interests with other students on campus. This will help promote and navigate the opportunities on campus and allow students to engage in what they are looking for. It will reduce the clutter. Connect students with other innovators across other university campuses.

In order to expand opportunities on and off campus we will reach out to other universities interested in social innovation and social entrepreneurship. These events will include, hackathon, social innovation competitions and design thinking bootcamps to engage with the issues in our community.

==== Expand Social Change Corps Program ====

The Social Change Corps (SCC) supports students wanting to explore changemaking opportunities by providing financial support and mentoring. This initiative promotes students’ understanding of social issues and social justice as they actively participate in a community-based or social enterprise experience, locally or abroad. The 2017 SCC offers $500 during a semester for a team of three to five students to explore who they are as Changemakers and to develop their skills in framing social issues and creating innovative approaches to addressing them. All the SCC teams receive mentoring from the start.

==== Utilize the First-Year Living Learning Communities (LLC's) to expose new students to USD's changemaker identity ====

At the University of San Diego, we have Living Learning Communities to help first-year students get accustomed to college. This program places students who live in the same residence hall in a class together once a semester to discuss a topic unique to their living community. Currently, these LLC's are underutilized so we are working to ensure that this program better meets the needs of the students. While we are analyzing the program, we plan to utilize this great opportunity that all first-year students get to be apart of and incorporate changemaker topics within each class. We hope to expose all students to our Changemaker identity as a University as it is an honor and a privilege.

As fellows, we will be working with the administration to 1.assist faculty in creating meaningful assignments/experiences that link to each LLC theme, 2.provide students meaningful experiences that connect their first-year experience to their community, and 3.provide a consistent/steady involvement of students/faculty/staff for our community partners in ways that are beneficial for their needs/development/growth. This is a great opportunity that will have a great benefit on the students and also on the local community and we look forward to tailoring the LLC program so that it is in the best interest of the students.

Erica Buyalos is a University Innovation Fellow and is studying Marketing for her Undergraduate Degree at the University of San Diego. Erica was born-and-raised in California, and has always lived near the Thousand Oaks area.

Erica hopes to one day take down some of the socio-economic associated with healthy eating. She hopes to one day open an affordable-health-food restaraunt. She envisions a place someone could go many times a week to eat and enjoy nourishing food without worrying about the cost as much. She hopes to one day take this even further, and globally bring nourishing food to many who don't have it available. She has begun this journey of trying to make healthy eating simpler by creating an Instagram account with the name @Faithfulleats. On here, Erica hopes to bring positivity into others' day and show easy meal ideas they can make, too!

During her Freshman Year at the University of San Diego, Erica participated in the Changemaker Hub. Here, she met a former University Innovation Fellow, Isabelle Ashraf. Ashraf became like a mentor to Erica and helped her get involved during her Freshman year! Ashraf also nominated Erica for the University Innovation Fellows program and Erica pursued it from there.

During her free time, Erica enjoys cooking, teaching Sunday school at Church, running, and going to the beach with friends! Erica loves to be around people and enjoys being a part of the community at the University of San Diego.[[File:Erica Buyalos Head Shot.jpeg]]

Changemaker Hub

The Changemaker Hub is a resource for students on campus to actively learn and engage with social justice and social innovation on both a global and local scale. The Changemaker Hub is a central location on campus that facilitates students getting involved. This is an Ashoka U certified organization on our campus. Furthermore, the Hub is dedicated to teaching students the method and importance of design-thinking. There have been a number of workshops put on centered around design-thinking, including the LAUNCH program. LAUNCH is a six-week design thinking bootcamp put on by the Changemaker Hub. 

Initiatives on Campus 

Because the Changemaker Hub is so central to campus, their are a myriad of events that take place within it. Not only this, but the Hub is working to collaborate with other clubs on campus to reach the student body even more. Pancake Peeps just recently merged with the Changemaker Hub in 2019. Pancake Peeps was begun by a dedicated student, and is now an extremely popular program. Every Saturday, students carpool to Downtown, San Diego. Here, the students cook pancakes for the local homeless population. 

Furthermore, Outdoor Adventures is a wide-reaching program on campus. Many students resonate with the love of being outdoors. Outdoor Adventures goes on frequent trips, as well as a retreat before the school year even starts. A lot of students begin to feel really at home with the Outdoor Adventures community, and are able to bond with new friends in the outdoors!

Other organizations such as the Math Learning Center are really crucial to campus. The peer-to-peer tutoring is especially helpful as students can more effectively help others when they have literally had the same professors and sat in the same desks!

USD provides many opportunities for Entreprenuership through the Entrepreneurship Club and their events, as well as "Torero Treks" where students visit real, large companies and learn about what goes on there. 

=== Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ===

Due to the nature of small class sizes, faculty and students are very closely connected. Most teachers know all or at least a majority of their students names. The smaller environment makes many students feel more comfortable and feel like they can approach their professors. In comparison, professors also feel closer to their students becuase they have such small class sizes. Professors make sure to offer their time in office hours regularly.

Furthermore, because students and teachers are so close, many faculty on campus are passionate about helping students with their endeavours, whether these endeavours are academic or not. For example, work study students are given the opportunity to work closely with faculty members and learn what it is like to be in a business. For instance, students may participate in staff meetings. 

=== Actively Supporting The University Technology Transfer Function  ===

Students at USD could be more closely integrated during Freshman Year. Due to the spread out locations of on-campus dorms, many poeple struggle to meet others outside of their living area on campus. The freshman orientation includes many activities and field trips where students are randomly paired together, no matter where they live. We would love to facilitate more of these trips to bring opportunities for students all over campus to meet each other.

Feedback from Students

When we interviewed some students on campus we found that there were a few common concerns among the students. Many voiced concerns about the lack of transportation from and around campus. When interviewing students it was also made apparent that we can do a better job publicizing some opportunities better to students such as grants offered and opportunities for students to use what they learned in the classroom in real life. Students also shared that they enjoyed our events that were linked to the community such as My Story and Dinner with Strangers and they would appreciate working more with the local USD community.

Analyzing our Landscape Canvas

Active students who hold leadership positions and who take initiative are more aware of various opportunities for innovation, but the general student body and alumni often lack a way of connecting to our Changemaker identity. We consider this a big problem that we want to explore and further research. In addition, in the "spin out" section USD lacked a long-term support system of students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship after graduation. While USD offers a variety of ways to get involved while attending the college, it lacks a connect to alumni and supporting students after they graduate.

Erica Buyalos is a University Innovation Fellow and is studying Marketing for her Undergraduate Degree at the University of San Diego. Erica was born-and-raised in California, and has always lived near the Thousand Oaks area.

Erica hopes to one day take down some of the socio-economic associated with healthy eating. She hopes to one day open an affordable-health-food restaraunt. She envisions a place someone could go many times a week to eat and enjoy nourishing food without worrying about the cost as much. She hopes to one day take this even further, and globally bring nourishing food to many who don't have it available. She has begun this journey of trying to make healthy eating simpler by creating an Instagram account with the name @Faithfulleats. On here, Erica hopes to bring positivity into others' day and show easy meal ideas they can make, too!

During her Freshman Year at the University of San Diego, Erica participated in the Changemaker Hub. Here, she met a former University Innovation Fellow, Isabelle Ashraf. Ashraf became like a mentor to Erica and helped her get involved during her Freshman year! Ashraf also nominated Erica for the University Innovation Fellows program and Erica pursued it from there.

During her free time, Erica enjoys cooking, teaching Sunday school at Church, running, and going to the beach with friends! Erica loves to be around people and enjoys being a part of the community at the University of San Diego.

Because the Changemaker Hub is so central to campus, their are a myriad of events that take place within it. Not only this, but the Hub is working to collaborate with other clubs on campus to reach the student body even more. Pancake Peeps just recently merged with the Changemaker Hub in 2019. Pancake Peeps was begun by a dedicated student, and is now an extremely popular program. Every Saturday, students carpool to Downtown, San Diego. Here, the students cook pancakes for the local homeless population. 

Furthermore, Outdoor Adventures is a wide-reaching program on campus. Many students resonate with the love of being outdoors. Outdoor Adventures goes on frequent trips, as well as a retreat before the school year even starts. A lot of students begin to feel really at home with the Outdoor Adventures community, and are able to bond with new friends in the outdoors!

Other organizations such as the Math Learning Center are really crucial to campus. The peer-to-peer tutoring is especially helpful as students can more effectively help others when they have literally had the same professors and sat in the same desks!

USD provides many opportunities for Entreprenuership through the Entrepreneurship Club and their events, as well as "Torero Treks" where students visit real, large companies and learn about what goes on there.

Due to the nature of small class sizes, faculty and students are very closely connected. Most teachers know all or at least a majority of their students names. The smaller environment makes many students feel more comfortable and feel like they can approach their professors. In comparison, professors also feel closer to their students becuase they have such small class sizes. Professors make sure to offer their time in office hours regularly.

Furthermore, because students and teachers are so close, many faculty on campus are passionate about helping students with their endeavours, whether these endeavours are academic or not. For example, work study students are given the opportunity to work closely with faculty members and learn what it is like to be in a business. For instance, students may participate in staff meetings.

We believe that the students could be more closely integrated during Freshman Year. Due to the spread out locations of on-campus dorms, many poeple struggle to meet others outside of their living area on campus. The freshman orientation includes many activities and field trips where students are randomly paired together, no matter where they live. We would love to facilitate more of these trips to bring opportunities for students all over campus to meet each other. 

Our school does not have a Technology Transfer Office.

When interviewing students it was also made apparent that we can do a better job publicizing some opportunities better to students such as grants offered and opportunities for students to use what they learned in the classroom in real life. Students also shared that they enjoyed our events that were linked to the community such as My Story and Dinner with Strangers and they would appreciate working more with the local USD community.

Active students who hold leadership positions and who take initiative are more aware of various opportunities for innovation, but the general student body and alumni often lack a way of connecting to our Changemaker identity. We consider this a big problem that we want to explore and further research. In addition, in the "spin out" section USD lacked a long-term support system of students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship after graduation. While USD offers a variety of ways to get involved while attending the college, it lacks a connect to alumni and supporting students after they graduate.

Changemaker Hub

The Changemaker Hub is a resource for students on campus to actively learn and engage with social justice and social innovation on both a global and local scale. The Changemaker Hub is a central location on campus that facilitates students getting involved. This is an Ashoka U certified organization on our campus. Furthermore, the Hub is dedicated to teaching students the method and importance of design-thinking. There have been a number of workshops put on centered around design-thinking, including the LAUNCH program. LAUNCH is a six-week design thinking bootcamp put on by the Changemaker Hub.

Feedback from Students

When we interviewed some students on campus we found that there were a few common concerns among the students. Many voiced concerns about the lack of transportation from and around campus. When interviewing students it was also made apparent that we can do a better job publicizing some opportunities better to students such as grants offered and opportunities for students to use what they learned in the classroom in real life. Students also shared that they enjoyed our events that were linked to the community such as My Story and Dinner with Strangers and they would appreciate working more with the local USD community.

Analyzing our Landscape Canvas

Active students who hold leadership positions and who take initiative are more aware of various opportunities for innovation, but the general student body and alumni often lack a way of connecting to our Changemaker identity. We consider this a big problem that we want to explore and further research. In addition, in the "spin out" section USD lacked a long-term support system of students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship after graduation. While USD offers a variety of ways to get involved while attending the college, it lacks a connect to alumni and supporting students after they graduate.

=== Promoting Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship ===

Changemaker Hub

The Changemaker Hub is a resource for students on campus to actively learn and engage with social justice and social innovation on both a global and local scale. The Changemaker Hub is a central location on campus that facilitates students getting involved. This is an Ashoka U certified organization on our campus. Furthermore, the Hub is dedicated to teaching students the method and importance of design-thinking. There have been a number of workshops put on centered around design-thinking, including the LAUNCH program. LAUNCH is a six-week design thinking bootcamp put on by the Changemaker Hub. 

Initiatives on Campus 

Because the Changemaker Hub is so central to campus, their are a myriad of events that take place within it. Not only this, but the Hub is working to collaborate with other clubs on campus to reach the student body even more. Pancake Peeps just recently merged with the Changemaker Hub in 2019. Pancake Peeps was begun by a dedicated student, and is now an extremely popular program. Every Saturday, students carpool to Downtown, San Diego. Here, the students cook pancakes for the local homeless population. 

=== Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ===

In addition, USD is currently implementing a strategic plan "Envisioning 2024". This strategic plan has been put in place to capitalizes on the university’s recent progress and aligns new strategic goals with current strengths to help shape a vision for the future as the university looks ahead to its 75th anniversary in the year 2024. Through this process we are analyzing how we can enhance student success, strengthen diversity, inclusion, and social justice, and improve other aspects of our campus.  

=== Actively Supporting The University Technology Transfer Function  ===

USD offers a wide range of events and opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds but we can still improve some aspects of our campus. We feel that we can re-imagine parts of the Freshmen Orientation experience so as to accommodate all students better and ensure we are offering the most engaging and innovative opportunities our campus has to offer.

"Current initiatives on our campus include a variety of events across multiple departments.  Our Changemaker Hub promotes social innovation and entrepreneurship through Social Change Corps, Changemaker Student Committee, hosting a social innovation lab and promoting social innovation to incoming students. Our Career Development Center encourages students to go on a “Torero Trek” which is an opportunity for students to travel across the country to learn about career opportunities from innovative and diverse businesses. In addition to departmental initiatives, students who have created their own organizations on campus also promote and take part in social innovation and entrepreneurship. Some Student-run organizations include: Net Impact Club, TEDx, and pancake peeps. These Organization along with many others go above and beyond to take action and hold events throughout the year."
