Xiaolu "Emma" Sui is a recent graduate of Smith College, an all women's liberal arts college in Northampton, MA. Originally from Dalian, China, Emma majored in Economics and Anthropology at Smith and is now studying for her master's in Education Policy at Penn Graduate School of Education. [[File:Emmasui.jpeg|thumb|Emmasui.jpeg]]As a member of the 2018-2019 cohort, she is particularly interested in making innovation and entrepreneurship offerings at Smith College and in the 5-College Consortium more accessible for students who do not yet see themselves as innovators or entrepreneurs. She has continued her involvement in the UIF program by serving as UIGuide to the Converse College UIF team in the 2019-2020 year.

This past summer, she worked as a summer research assistant at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and analyzed the popular fiction The Hunger Games and its movie adaptation to compare cross-media thematic differences from key plots. As a member of the 2018-2019 cohort, she is particularly interested in making innovation and entrepreneurship offerings at Smith College and in the 5-College Consortium more accessible for students who do not yet see themselves as innovators or entrepreneurs. Emmasui:

Asmita Gautam is a University Innovation Fellow and an undergraduate student studying Computer Science and Engineering Science at Smith College. She is an aspiring software engineer. Asmita is from Kathmandu, Nepal, where she lived all her life before college. She was introduced to the University Innovation Fellows from the Design Thinking Initiative at Smith, where she worked as the Empathy Design Partner her sophomore year.

At Smith College, Asmita is also the Vice-President of the Society of Women Engineers. She is very passionate about increasing female participation in STEM fields. She is also the student liaison for the Computer Science department at Smith. She is also actively involved with the international student organization at Smith and held executive board positions for two years.

Asmita’s passion for innovation and entrepreneurship started when she got trained by the Director of the Design Thinking Initiative at Smith on design thinking principles. She loves the idea of human centered designs and hopes to have her own start up some day applying these concepts she is learning. On her campus, she is interested in promoting collaboration across disciplines to pursue entrepreneurial ideas.

Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Beth has been [[File:Bethyigzaw.jpeg|thumb|Bethyigzaw.jpeg]]living in the Washington DC area for the past 8 years until she moved to Western Massachusetts for College. Outside of her interest in STEM and scientific research, she is passionate about using contemporary education and technology to provide alternative academic support for students in higher education. <span style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial; font-size: 10.5pt; white-space: pre-wrap;">Economics professor Mahnaz Mahdavi established the Center for Women & Financial Independence. Since then, student innovation and entrepreneurship at Smith College began gaining momentum in both available resources and demonstrated student interest. Smith has at least nine courses and seven workshops, both interdepartmental and department-specific, that introduce the concepts of design thinking and entrepreneurship, allow students to use and experiment with these tools in hands-on settings, and build their creative confidence. These courses range from beginning level courses in Arts, Engineering, and Landscape Studies, to an advanced Capstone Design course named the Design Clinic. There are also a series of workshops offered through the Lazarus Center for Career Development, the Wurtele Center for Work & Life, and the Conway Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center. These curricular resources are supplemented by other extra-curricular opportunities such as various conferences, competitions, and student organizations that allow students to gain further exposure and enrich their innovative experiences. The recently established Conway Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, previously the Center for Women & Financial Independence, works hard to inspire and encourage students to engage in innovative ventures through classes, workshops, as well as competitions. Every year, the school hosts the Draper Competition for Collegiate Women Entrepreneurs, which is open to students nationwide. Smith College also has a Design Thinking Initiative that holds workshops, a makerspace, a prototyping studio, and classes which are open to students from all majors and class years.</span>

<span id="docs-internal-guid-a9a04570-7fff-2c5d-3669-d9e0bad40e61"><span style="font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">As a liberal arts college, Smith has mostly focused on encouraging and supporting faculty as researchers and teachers. While this support allows for innovation opportunities in terms of designing courses and workshops, there is little encouragement towards entrepreneurial ventures. Deeply academic individuals, the faculty demonstrates limited interest in these areas of work. However, a recently launched series of design thinking workshops for faculty, and the Sherrerd Center for Teaching and Learning show promise of an emerging innovation and entrepreneurship culture among the faculty. Further efforts to strengthen and support this transformation is necessary, however, in order to have the culture established and accepted.</span></span>

The office notifies students of upcoming job and internship application deadlines or opportunities via regular emails. University-industry collaboration is also strengthened by field trips, conferences, and alumnae outreach. The academic departments also facilitate major-specific industry communication by forwarding information about opportunities to students. However, these opportunities are limited and do not accommodate a broad variety of academic and vocational interests.</span></span>

In the summer of 2017, two Smith students developed their ventures through this program. Smith College has recently forged a connection with AmherstWorks, a space that promotes entrepreneurial ventures.</span></span></span></span>
