Short-Term Strategy: Sparking Interest
Enable students by creating a collaborative space for creativity, design, and innovation.
Objectives:

1. Foster ideas, collaboration and creativity for students of all disciplines.

2. Create and sustain a culture of doing, making, innovation and entrepreneurship.

3. Promote learning-by-doing and provide resources to enable students to transform ideas into products that could be commercialized.

Many of the most forward-thinking companies provide spaces for employees that encourage innovation. Well-designed spaces often serve as catalysts for enhanced collaboration and innovation. We will create collaborative spaces for students that allow for greater creativity, design and innovation on campus. By holding events and meetings in the spaces, students across all disciplines will begin to use the spaces to work with others' projects.

In addition to having a few dedicated spaces, there are several common areas on campus that would make excellent pop-up spaces. We will provide guides and resources for students to successfully create a temporary collaborative space of their own anywhere on campus.

Mechanical Engineering Design Lab
In collaboration with Professor Jered Dean of Mechanical Engineering, the senior design lab has evolved into a collaborative workspace for student projects, meetings, workshops and classes. The space has open hours, allowing students from every major and grade level to collaborate on academic or personal projects.

MakerSpace
There will be a trial run for a MakerSpace to be implemented on campus. If this space is a success, the Mines UIF leadership circle will analyze feedback around the space and try to implement a permanent building for design thinking, innovation, and entrepreneurship with a floor dedicated to being a functional MakerSpace.

Establish regular Design, Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (DICE) events
By collaborating with organizations and faculty across campus, we will hold events that expose students to proven concepts and principles that lead to truly innovative solutions. Having regular events will help foster a community of innovation and entrepreneurship that doesn't often occur in a traditional lecture setting.

Leveraging existing student organizations to put on DICE events
There are numerous campus organizations (SWE, AIChE, SPE, EWB, Tau Beta Pi, Blue Key) that have the resources to organize successful DICE events to increase opportunities for student innovation. These events could include makeathons, hackathons, design challenges, business model competitions, and many more.

An Entrepreneurship Club has recently been established by the Mines student body that has been key partners in developing events to promote innovation and entrepreneurship.

Problem of the Week
To change the student mindset on campus, we will start holding pop-up meetings in high-traffic areas to discuss a "Problem of the Week." We will increase exposure to, and engagement with, problem-focused design by allowing students the ability to stop by and participate without any major commitment. The pop-up meetings can be expanded to allow for low-resolution prototyping, using arts and crafts or video. Images from the pop-up events will be posted online. The pop-up meetings will also serve as advertisement for other DICE events.

Design Weekend
Currently, there is no coordination between EPICS and other design courses across campus to exhibit student projects; that needs to change. A campus-wide exhibition, open to the community, will provide students from all disciplines with the opportunity to showcase their projects, and also strengthen the culture of design, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship on campus.

TEDx
Previously, University Innovation Fellows have seen success in improving the innovation and entrepreneurial landscape on their campuses by hosting a TEDx event. A lot of student interest in TED already exists, and this interest can be leveraged to make a successful event to serve as inspiration for the university. A TEDx event can be focused on innovation and entrepreneurship, to inspire a campus community, by showcasing examples of innovative faculty research, successful entrepreneurial alumni and current students who have commercialized technology and achieved positive economic, societal and environmental impact.

3 Day Startup: 3DS Springboard
3DS Springboard is an interactive workshop focused on the beginning steps of launching a company or a project through on-campus innovation. During four 90-minute sessions over one week, students will learn-by-doing with the 3DS team, Epicenter University Innovation Fellows leaders on campus, and other students in the community who are passionate about starting something!

Promoting Creativity and Mental Health
Creativity / De-stress Zone
By creating a space on campus where students can find resources to stimulate the creative, right side of their brains, we will increase both creativity and mental health on campus. In this space, students will find board games, puzzles, art supplies, instruments and other resources to de-stress and create.

Next Steps: Institutional Acceptance and Support for DICE
Update design classes to incorporate modern design & development principles
Most students attending Mines are exposed to design in EPICS I, EPICS II (including Department-Specific EPICS II) and Senior Design. Only a few of the curriculums incorporate the following ideas/processes widely practiced in the industry: design-thinking, problem-focused design, rapid and low-resolution prototyping, fast failure and lean principles. Incorporating all of these practices into the curriculum would properly prepare students to develop truly innovative solutions to real problems. The design courses could allow for more creativity and innovation by shifting from constraining projects to open-ended, problem-based projects.

Grow and expand the academic entrepreneurship offering
According to the Undergraduate Bulletin, there is an “Area of Special Interest (ASI) in Entrepreneurship” that consists of 3 classes that are not currently offered.

To demonstrate that entrepreneurship is a priority to the University and the Department of Economics and Business, the ASI needs to be updated and promoted. There are several course offerings focused on design-thinking and entrepreneurship that should be incorporated into a certificate program, minor or area of special interest for entrepreneurship.

Ideally, the entrepreneurship program would incorporate a multidisciplinary senior design alternative course that allows students from any major to apply principles from the engineering and entrepreneurship curriculums.

The recent courses added to the Mines community includes:

*Technology Entrepreneurship
*Intro to Entrepreneurship

Creation of Grand Challenges Themed Learning Community
Mines requires all first-year students to live on campus in the residence halls. Programs that promote design, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship can be put in place for interested students living on campus. Mines has several themed learning communities, and a community focused on the NAE's Grand Challenges would have a large impact in creating a sustainable culture of innovation and entrepreneurship.

The community is in its second year on campus and is thriving. The students in this community have a tight bond created through floor activities as well as an engineering design and ethics course where the students have many opportunities to work together to solve varying problems. This program has also served as a resource for students who wish to become from active in the entrepreneurial community.

Establish a speaker series for design, innovation and entrepreneurship
Creating a regular speaker series focused on design, innovation and entrepreneurship will develop interest, as well as connect the entrepreneurial community within Mines to current students in other disciplines. Many Mines alum and faculty have relevant experience and insight, which could inspire a new generation of makers, doers and entrepreneurs. A series focused on I&E would be a multidisciplinary initiative that would have wide-spread support across campus, due to the universal nature of I&E principles.

Innovation Challenge
Mines' first Innovation Competition took place in Spring 2016. 10 teams were awarded money to begin prototyping in hopes of starting their own company or patenting their design.

Business Workshop
A business workshop will be taking place in Spring 2016 that works through the business model canvas with groups of students that have a product or idea for a company.

Mental Health on Campus
No Work Zone
One idea we are currently pursuing is the creation of a "No Work Zone." This would be a place for students on campus to take a break and relax. Mines is a highly esteemed engineering school which promotes intense focus on academics. Many study and design areas are located around campus. We don't any of these spaces to be taken away, but we do want a new space to be implemented.

Our goal for this space is to make mental health a bigger priority on campus. Students commonly express their levels of stress, but there are not many resources on campus to help combat the high pressure work environment.

Currently, we are acquiring feedback on this initial idea to see if it would be feasible, and more importantly if it would benefit students. After thhis period, we plan to take the idea to stakeholders on campus.

Long-term Vision
Create a multidisciplinary Design, Innovation and Entrepreneurship institute
The establishment of a multidisciplinary design institute will allow for the creation of a modern engineer that is equipped to develop solutions to complex real-world problems. Having a design institute would make Mines the premier institution for engineering and applied-science education.

Many of the nation's best engineering schools have a program or institute for design, innovation or entrepreneurship:

[http://dschool.stanford.edu/ Stanford - d.school
] MIT - Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship
Harvard - Technology and Entrepreneurship Center at Harvard (TECH)
UC Berkeley - Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology
Michigan - Center for Entrepreneurship
Georgia Tech - Enterprise Innovation Institute
North Carolina State - Engineering Entrepreneurs Program EEP
Illinois - Technology Entrepreneurship Center
CU Boulder - eship program

The Colorado School of Mines has the opportunity to become a national leader for design, innovation and entrepreneurship.

In the Spring 2014 semester, the Entrepreneurship Club at mines was restarted to become an active campus organization that has brought in local entrepreneurs to talk about their experiences. The club will organize several campus wide events in the coming academic year to increase awareness and exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Design Lab
The Director of Senior Design for Mechanical Engineering, Jered Dean, has taken steps to transform the mechanical engineering senior design lab into an open design lab that allows students to use equipment for any academic or personal project. The lab consists of 6 new makerbot 3D printers along with other prototyping equipment in the basement of Brown Hall. The entire Senior Design Program is Known as the Capstone Design Program and is named as such to Symbolize the "Capstone" at the end of the undergraduate program at Mines. As part of this program students can partner with companies and use the senior design lab as a space to innovate and generate prototypes and designs.

Another Option that is avalible to all Students as a resource for pursueing inrest in innovation and design is the Career center where students can connect with bussinesses that can assist with Ideas and projects students wish to pursue or apply for internships with Companies whose intrests align with there own.

In the past few months many new design areas have been added to campus some for all enrolled students like the Blaster Design Factory, and others for specific majors like The Outlet. Spaces like these and others provide students with the ability and the means to bring life to their ideas. Other spaces like the The Digger Design Factory and the Machine Shop are for a more hands on approach instead of a more design oriented enviornment.

Startup Summer
Employers participating in Startup Summer have come to Mines to promote the program where students interested in startups can have a paid internship and gain valuable insight into innovation and entrepreneurship. This program has been a pathway for post graduation employment for several Mines graduates.

Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship
Pathway to Innovation Leadership Team
Overall, encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship has become a focus here at Mines. The Pathway to Innovation Leadership Team is a group of faculty members focused on promoting innovation and entrepreneurship amidst the student body.

*The Pathways to Innovation Leadership Team partnered with the University Innovation Fellows to put on the first Inovation Competition for students at Mines.
*The team has connections to other faculty members with experience in business and entrepreneurship. These faculty members have expressed interest in showcasing their experiences and running workshops around innovation and entrepreneurship.

Resources for Midea
Faculty members have helped develop resources for the Midea Hub (online tool used by students looking for resources while in different stages of the innovation or entrepreneurship process). These faculty members range in expertise from design thinking to policy and paperwork regarding patents.

Building Relationships with Faculty Members
The Colorado School of Mines UIF Leadership circle focuses on building professional and personal relationships with faculty in order to encourage faculty innovation and rally support for the concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship.

Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function
The office of technology transfer (OTT) has primarily been used to commercialize PhD research.

OTT has provided an extensive list of regional and national resources that might be of use for students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Office of Research Administration (ORA) is also a resource for students who are interested in researching a particular subject in depth. The ORA provides guidance for all steps of research, including proposal preparation, grant writing, and seeking for fundings. A full list of resources and contact information can be found here.

In addition to the above resources, Mines has recently put together a new website named Midea that contains resources both on campus and on the web. The vision for this website is to be a hub for all student innovation and entrepreneurial activities where students can see projects other students have put together, find inspiration, or seek help from other students or faculty. This site is still in its beginning stages and many of its pages do not yet have any information on them, but this will be changing over the next several weeks as information is continually being added.

Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration
Current collaboration exists between research groups and industry. These collaborations are primarily used to fund graduate students and do not promote innovation/entrepreneurship.

Resources on Campus
While the majority of collaboration is used to fund graduate students. There are resources that help students branch out and make lasting connections

McBride Honors Program
The McBride Honors Program is very generous in funding scholarships that can be used to travel abroad and help pay for internship costs. They also provide an extensive list of available internships and programs. Due to the engineering focus on Mines' campus, most of the opportunities are focused in engineering and creating policy around it. But there are opportunities that allow for experiences that can be used to learn a great deal about how other places and cultures run their schooling systems and how people associate in general.

One such opportunity is the various programs offered by People to People International. These programs link people through the exchange of experiences and ideas.

Career Center and Alumni Association
The Career Center at Colorado School of Mines does not fund students, but it does offer a wide range of career and internship opportunities. Many students take advantage of the Career Day and different workshops around campus to secure positions from a wide range of fields.

The Alumni Association also offers vast neworking opportunities outside of the university.

Off Campus Resources
Denver Area Resources
Off campus resources include places such as Innovation Pavilion where anyone can rent out conference rooms and use the on site resources. While places such as these so require additional cost, they are important resources to consider once becoming more established.

Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club)
In the Spring 2014 semester, the Entrepreneurship Club at mines was restarted to become an active campus organization that has brought in local entrepreneurs to talk about their experiences. The club will organize several campus wide events in the coming academic year to increase awareness and exposure to innovation and entrepreneurship.

Website is under development.

Emma May is a freshman studying Computer Science at the Colorado School of Mines. She discovered her passion for programming her junior year of high school, after being pressured into a computer science class by the teacher, who was looking to get more women involved in the program. It turned out to be the best peer pressure she could have given into. When not staring into a computer screen, desperately trying to find bugs in her code, Emma stays very active. She enjoys exploring the outdoors by foot, kayak, or canoe. And while it doesn't boost her GPA, she runs for about eight credit hours a week. Outside of that, Emma works with Discovering Technoloyg, a program dedicated to encouraging elementary and middle school girls to pursue their interest in STEM fields. Emma is incredibly excited for the opportunity to be a University Innovation Fellow. She has traveled to multiple third world countries, and has seen a heart-breaking lack of education around the world. She hopes to gain a "toolbox for change" through UIF in order to make a difference around the world.

Emma May:

BACKGROUND
Macy Tush is a student at William Jewell College in Kansas City. University Innovation Fellows have been working to improve her campus for four years, and Macy has been a part of the program for two years. She and the other fellows on campus worked individually and together to encourage entrepreuneurship and innovation. One fellow, Alex, wanted to focus on determining a system to quantify happiness on campus, and then finding ways to improve it. Alex and a few other fellows were close to graduating, so they decided to work as a team to create a lasting impact before they left.

Alex created a survey that asked users to rank factors that affect one's happiness, such as freedom and autonomy, and used these results to quantify an individual's happiness. While no legitamite conclusions could be drawn from just this survey, the fellows saw a pattern. Happiness increased in individuals who felt safer, felt they had more control over their decisions and who had the opportunity to meet new people. Macy also felt there was significant disunity on campus, specifically between faculty and students, and realized that this is also a cause for dissatisfaction on campus. So the fellows got to work.

HOW
Macy and her cohort had settled on a simple realization that a happier campus would lead to more creativity and better innovation. To this end, Macy decided to host events intended to increase the morale on campus, more specifically pop-up classes, makeathons, and town halls/open forums.

Initially, marketing for these events was executed in a traditional manor. Macy created events on facebook, printed off flyers, and added onto the events calendars through the school. Unfortunately, despite the great intentions and admirable effort, turnout was minimal. What the UIF cohort would come to realize is that events become tremendously more attractive to participants if they are marketed as mysterious and exclusive, making them stand out amongst an already crowded campus listing.

Macy and her team dug deep and decided to promote their next event through business cards. They ordered simple cards with an “X” on one side and the time and location on the other professionally printed. Nothing else. No group name. No additional information. Members of the UIF team would personally hand these out to classmates while simply adding “Don’t tell anyone”.

So now, what once was an open forum event at a local bar is now a mysterious meet-up that requires a card to get into and is supposed to be kept secret. Turnout was almost 100% and the event lasted 2 additional hours because the dialogue was so vibrant. Macy’s plan was a resounding success.

WHY IT WORKED
From Macy’s experience, having a campus filled with happy students cultivates creativity because more students will be willing to take advantage of on-campus resources. When students utilize those resources, they are giving themselves the opportunity to be creative and innovative with their ideas. Consider these 3 points when initiating happiness on your campus:

First, give students a platform to be heard. Some schools offer specific meetings or events, where students can voice their opinions. However, the hardest part with these meetings is getting a variety of people to show up. Try creating a special invitation or personally reaching out to invite a student. The more voices in attendance means more perspectives that can address the pessimism on your campus.

Second, don’t just talk about the problem, generate a solution. For example, by the end of the meeting, make a goal of having three solutions for three problems. If not, you are just going to create a space for complaints and additional negativity. Thinking of solutions on spot will also further students’ ability to be creative and innovative in solving problems they thought would never be solved.

Finally, do not be afraid to do small, silly things to grab students’ attention. Not only will you be making a lasting impression, but you’ll also create a great conversation starter that could catch on across campus!
While promoting for the events Macy and her cohort faced some challenges and counterblasts. Some of them were inviting people for the event when they are conducting it for the first time was the most typical task they ever faced. Inviting in the sense meeting them personally and distributing cards to them to get involved in the meeting.

The funniest thing is that some people thought that the T-Shirts are some sort of drug reference. Especially, when she entered the male rooms.

For example, by the end of the meeting, make a goal of having three solutions for three problems. If not, you are just going to create a space for complaints and additional negativity. Thinking of solutions on spot will also further students’ ability to be creative and innovative in solving problems they thought would never be solved.
Not only will you be making a lasting impression, but you’ll also create a great conversation starter that could catch on across campus!
