He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a Concentration in Computer Engineering. Eric is proud to be one of Loyola's first cohort of 3 University Innovation Fellows.

Eric is interested in the design of consumer electronics such as Apple iPhone and MacBook and believes that passionate engineers can make a difference in the world. Through the use of carefully contructed designs in software and hardware, engineers can greatly enrich people's lives by connecting us in positive ways. This kind of innovation only happens when passionate people come together to build for a greater cause.

Eric is also interested in the national security and defense industry. In order to combat the everyday threats that face citizens of the United States and other countries throughout the globe, there is a need for innovative and collaborative work to provide new solutions and technology which will keep us safe.

Eric enjoys helping others to troubleshoot computer issues, filming and editing video, playing video games, skiing, and has experience with live theater sound mixing.

Loyola University Maryland, founded in 1852, is a liberal arts university located in Baltimore, Maryland. The Evergreen campus is the main undergraduate campus. Surrounded by a diverse and booming environment the potential for innovation and creativity is high. However, as of present, the resources for such ventures on Loyola’s campus is limited. Creative space for design thinking, prototyping, and research is almost non-existent on the campus, except for limited lab space reserved for the engineering students. Some courses are offered in the entrepreneurship and innovation field but expansion and improvement is needed. As the first group of University Innovation Fellows on the campus we are excited and motivated to change these aspects. With many creative and inspired minds on campus these resources would benefit students across disciplines and majors. The current resources on campus are outlined below.

*2 Introduction to Engineering courses which aim to invoke interest in innovation
*A few courses in the Sellinger School of Business which aim to provide inspiration for global entrepreneurship and new product development
*A new course being offered across the Engineering, Physics, and Computer Science departments called Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship allows students to learn how they can cross their scientific paths into the business world
*Our new University Innovation Fellows team
*A new VEX Robotics club. It is open to anybody on campus and allows for multidisciplinary teamwork
*An Entrepreneurship Club which invites speakers to Loyola every so often to tell their personal success stories in entrepreneurship
*Senior Design/Capstone projects offered in various majors to encourage students to think and create before going into their fields.
*HAUBER Summer Research Program allows students to work alongside faculty several weeks throughout the summer on a particular area of research

The faculty at Loyola University Maryland have minimal encouragement to pursue I&E ventures in their research.  Before the professors are tenured their research is scientifically based, with papers and theses following.  Once the professor is tenured a contract is set in place for further research, but at present very few of these contracts lead to entrepreneurial research.  A trend is in place for more accountable and funded research.  However, until professors on Loyola’s campus are supported in innovation and creativity based studies a key aspect of the I&E environment on campus is still lacking.

== ''Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function'' ==

There is currently no tech transfer office or department set up on Loyola’s campus.  However, there is the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.  Through this department faculty gain research support and funding.  Additionally, students can contact this office to find funding for their research programs and aid in developing legal status (especially when outside corporations are involved).  However, this is the only such resource on campus and this field needs to be expanded in order to promote I&E.

== ''Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration'' ==

Within the general Baltimore area there are maker space’s such as “The Foundry”, located downtown, and various metallurgy and casting mills, located in the Mount Washington area, open for public use.  However, Loyola and these businesses/spaces have not yet formed any personal connections.  Such a relationship would be extremely beneficial for students on the campus looking for design space and materials.  More connections with mentors and networking in the area, especially with companies that encourage innovation, start-ups, and entrepreneurship, need to be made, as well.

== ''Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts'' ==

Given Loyola’s location within the city of Baltimore, one would assume that there would be strong ties to venture capital firms, start-up incubators, and startup associated services. Alas, that does not seem to be the case. For whatever reason, the aforementioned firms have taken little interest in providing their services and guidance to students. Furthermore, as of right now, Loyola does not have the capability to harbor a small business development center for the surrounding community.

<li>To maximize undergraduate experience and increase cross-disciplinary collaboration, a group of student possessing technical skills and business acumen would provide business services to fellow students, faculty, and the greater Baltimore community.</li>
<li>The organizational structure of the business is as follows: Directors of Strategy, Technology, and Operations Under these three departments, there would lie associate and senior consultants.</li>
<li>For individuals who would like to join the team, but lack the technical or business acumen for whatever reason, the on-boarding process will require a “how-to” module. As an additional revenue source, and to inspire high school students, this module will be provided at a premium fee.</li>
<li>Based on the early success of the business, there is hope of expansion outside of state [Maryland] lines. Furthermore, to ensure fluid transfer of powers, there will always be a director-in-training</li>

For many students, resources already exist to help them explore design thinking and the innovative mindset. However, once these students become skilled in applying this knowledge to their work and their studies, it becomes extremely difficult to engage themselves in the professional development they should experience before graduation. Student-run venture accelerators allow students to receive advice from other experienced students and professional connections as well as access to the funding necessary to bring their ideas to fruition.

Not all universities are perfectly equipped for a student-run venture accelerator. To properly address entrepreneurialism on campus, the university must first have the resources to inspire an aura of innovation, through pop-up classes, makerspaces, student innovation unions, etc. Establishing an effective venture accelerator on your campus can be a lot of work, but without the proper conditions, it will likely fail due to low retention or funding. Venture accelerators are often the last step necessary to establish an environment on campus where students can freely explore and pursue their business ideas or products.

The goal of a venture accelerator is simple: give students the funding, guidance, and resources they need to take an idea from the whiteboard and put it into the marketplace. As such, the organization should be structured to minimize internal costs, maximize separation from the institution, and streamline access to the accelerator’s benefits so that students with great ideas may get the resources they need.

In order to minimize the cost of the accelerator, the success of the organization hinges on the voluntary work of the members. This is best accomplished by having a very small crew of dedicated individuals with experience in in VC or business development initially, and slowly expanding the group as the organization grows.

Venture accelerators often may incite political issues from within your university, by frightening pre-existing organizations, creating I.P. conflicts, etc. Thus it can often be a good idea to ask for forgiveness, rather than permission, when creating a student-run accelerator. The separation that your organization will get from your superseding institution will allow you to have much more freedom for further development, but also can create funding conflicts, so connections to corporate sponsors is often essential. So long as you end up with a well structured organization that shows potential, your institution will be plenty approving.

The largest issue that founders will face is, as with most education-oriented organizations, student retention. A mistake many over enthusiastic founders make is assuming everyone who comes out to their events will have the same eager interest in the material as they do, and often this assumption leads to overworking the students, who subsequently drop out. Individual motivation can easily decline over time if left unregulated so it is very important to talk with students as to why they may be losing interest. Balancing workload and results is a very tough game to play, but as a general rule, it is better to have large projects accomplished over the course of a quarter or potentially even the whole year than to force things to be done in a week’s worth of workshops. This structure encourages the most eager students will work above and beyond the call of duty, and thus gets students naturally involved and intrigued to help lead as the years go by.

Another major conflict such organizations will run into is students’ fear of failure. Promoting a business pitch or product idea is frightening enough on its own, but taking the next steps and putting in a large amount of time and effort into developing your own idea that certainly may, and statistically will fail… now that is a frightening prospect, especially to college students who already have plenty on their plate. In order to keep your students involved regardless of the potential of failure is to encourage them to live by the motto that failure is, in a way, success- you will learn and succeed from those failings. One way to do this is to have meetings focused around failure, where students can learn from professional examples of failed ventures to break the ice, and learn how to embrace their own failures and discuss them with the larger group, in order to identify their shortcomings and learn how not to run into those roadblocks next time around.

The University Innovation program encourages its fellows to pursue Stakeholder meetings, wherein fellows will learn how to properly address the top tiers of authority at their university, including the provost, president, board, deans, etc. Through these meetings, fellows will develop connections with people who have a strong influence in making institutional change; for instance, if one would like to get their accelerator access to an entrepreneurial fund on campus, it may be imperative to reach out to the dean of the business school and devise a deal. It is also often a good idea to get valuable insight from faculty who may have experience developing similar programs in the past. They have also learned from these developments, and will apply their new knowledge of how to deal with shortcomings when they assist you in development as well.

Ultimately, by bringing the shortcomings of your institution straight to the higher-ups whose best interest is none other than the best interests of the university they represent, showing how and why this change is necessary, you will have the best luck convincing your administration to help you along the way. Talking with your administration at the most basic level and inquiring as to where and why there may be a disconnect will improve their degree of utility and can fundamentally increase your venture accelerator’s success.

Loyola University Maryland, founded in 1852, is a liberal arts university located in Baltimore, Maryland.  The Evergreen campus is the main undergraduate campus.  Surrounded by a diverse and booming environment the potential for innovation and creativity is high.  However, as of present, the resources for such ventures on Loyola’s campus is limited.  Creative space for design thinking, prototyping, and research is almost non-existent on the campus, except for limited lab space reserved for the engineering students.  Some courses are offered in the entrepreneurship and innovation field but expansion and improvement is needed.  As the first group of University Innovation Fellows on the campus we are excited and motivated to change these aspects.  With many creative and inspired minds on campus these resources would benefit students across disciplines and majors.  The current resources on campus are outlined below.

== ''Promoting Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship'' ==
<div>Currently, Loyola does not offer a vast array of opportunities to dive into discovering, learning, and experimenting with innovation and entrepreneurship. There is a low sense of encouragement for students to pursue I&E. The current Fellows team is looking forward to changing this. We hope that with the support of people in the Loyola Community, we will change the attitude, atmosphere, and resources present for pursuing interest in I&E.</div><div> </div><div>The following list encompasses mostly every opportunity that Loyola offers to discover, learn, and experiment with I&E.</div><div> </div>
*2 Introduction to Engineering courses which aim to invoke interest in innovation
*A few courses in the Sellinger School of Business which aim to provide inspiration for global entrepreneurship and new product development
*A new course being offered across the Engineering, Physics, and Computer Science departments called Technical Innovation and Entrepreneurship allows students to learn how they can cross their scientific paths into the business world
*Our new University Innovation Fellows team
*A new VEX Robotics club. It is open to anybody on campus and allows for multidisciplinary teamwork
*An Entrepreneurship Club which invites speakers to Loyola every so often to tell their personal success stories in entrepreneurship
*Senior Design/Capstone projects offered in various majors to encourage students to think and create before going into their fields.
*HAUBER Summer Research Program which allows students to work alongside faculty several weeks throughout the summer on a particular area of research

== ''Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship'' ==

The faculty at Loyola University Maryland have very limited encouragement to pursue I&E ventures in their research.  Before the professors are tenured the research is scientifically based, with papers and theses following.  Once the professor is tenured a contract is set in place for further research, but at present very few of these contracts lead to entrepreneurial research.  A trend is in place for more accountable and funded research.  However, until professors on Loyola’s campus are supported in innovation and creativity based studies a key aspect of the I&E environment on campus is still lacking.

== ''Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function'' ==

There is currently no tech transfer office or department set up on Loyola’s campus.  However, there is the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.  Through this department faculty gains research support and funding.  Additionally, students can contact this office to find funding for their research programs and aid in developing legal status (especially when outside corporations are involved).  However, this is the only such resource on campus and this field needs to be expanded in order to promote I&E.

== ''Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration'' ==

Within the general Baltimore area there are maker space’s such as “The Foundry”, located downtown, and various metallurgy and casting mills, located in the Mount Washington area, open for public use.  However, as of yet, Loyola and these businesses/spaces have formed no personal connection.  Such a relationship would be extremely beneficial for students on the campus looking for design space and materials.  More connections with mentors and networking in the area, especially with companies that encourage innovation, start-ups, and entrepreneurship, need to be made, as well.

== ''Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts'' ==

Given Loyola’s location within the city of Baltimore, one would assume that there would be strong ties to venture capital firms, start-up incubators, and startup associated services. Alas, that does not seem to be the case. For whatever reason, the aforementioned firms have taken little interest in providing their services and guidance to students. Furthermore, as of right now, Loyola does not have the capability to harbor a small business development center for the surrounding community.

Christopher, a current junior at Loyola University Maryland, purusuing a Bachelor Degree in Economics. Christopher hails from Lewisburg, PA and believes that he has a genetic predisposition for entrepreneurship (his mother just created a new product, check it out at gorunlites.com).

Throughout his young adulthood, Christopher has created a landscaping company that hired 18 high school students; founded a charity benefiting pediatric cancer patients and their families; and a small scale startup consulting firm. He has also interned with various startup, most often assisting the CEO's directly. It might not be as innovative, but in order to make a quick buck, Christopher also re-sells high value sneakers and creates t-shirts.

On campus, Christopher chose many different leadership paths to foster and develop his entreprenurial mindset. He has been involved in Student Government, Chief Investment of Microfinance club, and a peer tutor. Christopher loves to use his diverse skill set and background to shake up the status quo.

Christopher's finest achievement is a potato cannon that has the capabilities to shatter tempered glass.

Eric Muchisky is currently a sophomore at Loyola University Maryland. He is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a Concentration in Computer Engineering. Eric is proud to be one of Loyola's first group of 4 University Innovation Fellows.

Eric is interested in the design of consumer electronics such as Apple iPhone and MacBook and believes that passionate engineers can make a difference in the world. Through the use of carefully contructed designs in software and hardware, engineers can greatly enrich people's lives by connecting us in positive ways. This kind of innovation only happens when passionate people come together to build for a greater cause.

Eric is also interested in the national security and defense industry. In order to combat the everyday threats that face citizens of the United States and other countries throughout the globe, there is a need for innovative and collaborative work to provide new solutions and technology which will keep us safe.

Eric enjoys helping others to troubleshoot computer issues, filming and editing video, playing video games, skiing, and has experience with live theater sound mixing.
