Eduardo Rojas-Flores joined the UIF family during his third year as a Mechanical Engineering student from the University of California, Merced.  Eduardo founded AIAA at UC Merced an organization with intentions to provide guidance and support for students pursuing an Aeronautical/Astronautical career. AIAA at UC Merced focuses on hands on experience within California’s Central Valley allowing members to build their resumes and enter the Aerospace/Aeronautical field after college. The organization quickly grew in resources and support from the University and Professional companies. It held the student region conference post Eduardo's departure from the University, however his efforts were recognized by the student organization and now they continue to uphold the founding misssions. The organization now has a working relationship with Lockheed Martin and an annual buget of $30,000 with over $150,000 dollars of funding since its founding.

After establishing the orginazation and becoming a fellow, Eduardo then became a Nasa Solar system Ambassador Volunteer for NASA-JPL. [https://solarsystem1.jpl.nasa.gov/ssa/biography.cfm?US_ID=1340 https://solarsystem1.jpl.nasa.gov/ssa/biography.cfm?US_ID=1340] His purpose is to become a role model for immigrant students as a future innovator in aeronautics, a humanitarian and policy maker. Through the program he has presented over 10 talks and held various events for students and parents of all ages.

His vision for his campus is to foster a competitive pool of students whose goal is to integrate California’s Central Valley’s economic, environmental and social needs into their own ambitions, for students to start to engage in solving real world problems.  By using the tools  provided by the University Innovation Fellows program, he hopes to aspire  constant innovation and breed the entrepreneurial spirit for UC Merced’s student body.

Eduardo Rojas-Flores now works in the Self Driving Car Industry as a Test Engineer and is thriving in due part to all the teachings of becoming a University Innovation Fellow.

Founded only recently in 2005, the University of California, Merced is the United States’ first research university built in the twenty-first century and is located in the heart of California's Central Valley. === E&J Gallo Management Program ===

There is no formal emphasis, major, or minor available at UC Merced in the field of entrepreneurship. However, UC Merced offers a course in Entrepreneurship (MGMT 180) under the E&J Gallo Management Program which encourages students to experience the creative process behind creating new products, crafting business plans, and delivering pitches. Starting in spring semester 2014, management and economics students from this program have begun collaborating with engineering students in the Capstone program. They will help Capstone groups to monetize and market their products.

=== Intellectual Property for Engineers and Scientists ===

The School of Engineering hosts a class on intellectual property law, ENGR 192, that convenes on Saturdays. This class is intended for engineers and teaches them aspects of patent and intellectual property law which are applicable towards undergraduate and graduate studentswho are planning to pursue a career in research and technology. The course examines the laws behind Intellectual Property, covering material on:

*Copyrights for technology protection
*Trademarks
*Trade Secrets
*Patent information including the patenting process
*Claim drafting

== Innovate to Grow ==

Innovate to Grow is the final competition that encompasses:

*Three of the best teams from Engineering Service Learning
*Five of the top finishing teams from Mobile App Challenge
*Twenty-three of the best teams from Innovation Design Clinic - Capstone.

They will compete in a poster and presentation competition. On May 16th, judges will decide the overall winner from all three of the programs.

=== Innovation and Design Clinic - Capstone ===

Capstone Design / Innovation Design Clinic (ME 170) is a course in which engineering students form teams and compete against each other as part of a competition.The Innovation Design Clinic, aka Capstone, is somewhat similar to the Engineering Service Learning program except that Capstone is more structured--engineering students are placed into teams that are tasked with creating specific projects. Together, they create a solution to a problem that has been designated to them by either industry or by course advisors. Teams are interdisciplinary; they include engineers, but also students from management and economics backgrounds. Twenty-three of the best teams are then chosen to compete inInnovate to Grow.

=== Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning ===

Under the School of Engineering, the Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program allows student groups to exercise their creative problem-solving abilities and project management skills while earning units. Student teams partner with community stakeholders under faculty advisors and exercise a great level of independence. Student teams are generally self-organized. Though their respective projects are guided by faculty advisors, in general they determine their own course of action, organization, and short-term goals. This forces them to think innovatively and run their projects like entrepreneurs. Students from all majors are welcome to join the program, if they choose. At the end of the semester, the three best Engineering Service Learning teams will be participating in the Innovate to Grow competition.

=== Mobile App Challenge - CITRIS ===

The Mobile App Challenge is a competition hosted by CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society. CITRIS is an institution at UC campuses that helps groundbreaking research obtain funding and helps to incubate research into startups. Students form teams to develop mobile apps that can solve a variety of issues to their choosing. The Software Engineering course (CSE 120) in the School of Engineering is required to participate in the challenge. Teams compete for a cash prize in front of a panelist of judges--the top 5 teams of the Mobile App Challenge then move on to compete in Innovate to Grow.

=== Flash Talks - Career Services Center ===

This is a pitch event where students have 20 minutes to present 20 slides based on a project that they’re a part of--which is more geared towards those students already participating in Mobile App Challenge, Engineering Service Learning, and Capstone but can be more broadly applied to students with any significant project that they wish to present. Student researchers are also welcome. This event is meant to help students exercise their presentation delivery skills and to reward those who are successful in both their presentation and their respective projects. Students compete against one another for a cash prize.

=== Entrepreneurial Seminar and Pitchfest Competition - TESUM ===

TESUM stands for The Entrepreneurs Society at UC Merced, which is a student-run RCO (Registered Club Organization) hosting a pitch competition for students where entrepreneurs can pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The judges are made up of entrepreneurs, IP lawyers and angel investors. The Entrepreneurial Seminar and Pitch fest competition also hosts workshops which are intended to support student entrepreneurs. The competition was partially funded by the student government at UC Merced, ASUCM (Associated Students of UC Merced).

== Center for Information Technology in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) ==

CITRIS is a program that is headquartered at Berkeley, but has centers at Davis, Merced, and Santa Cruz campuses. CITRIS is an institution at UC campuses that helps groundbreaking research obtain funding and helps to incubate research into startups. CITRIS has four primary initiatives: Energy, Democracy, Infrastructure, and Health. Its mission is to benefit each initiative with further integration with information technology by helping to fund research related to its initiatives. Through these four initiatives, CITRIS provides the support necessary to help provide solutions for California and the global community at large. CITRIS is also responsible for sponsoring the Mobile App Challenge, where the top 5 teams move on to the Innovate to Grow competition.

The MESA Lab host various events throughout the year to showcase its progress in innovative breakthroughs. Headed by Professor YangQuan Chen, student Lab Technician Interns and Undergraduate researchers work collaboratively with Graduate students to produce the most efficient and reliable systems possible.  The entrepreneurial spirit which guides the lab can be summed up by the following:  “Try to be the first to test and solve new problems; if your work is not the first of its kind, make sure that your solutions/research are the best.”

== Office of Technology Transfer ==

This Office works to inform faculty about proper methods ensuring intellectual property rights during the disclosure of inventions or patent-worthy discoveries. It also assists faculty in creating a record of invention (ROI) statement, filing the ROI with the UCOP database, and conducts the contractual negotiations with industrial partners or venture capitalists. Its second primary function is to work closely with UCOP Office of IAS accounting staff to assist with financial record keeping, accounts receivable and accounts payable for tech transfer transactions.

== Blum Center - Global California: The World at Home ==

The Blum Center at UC Merced is an extension of the original Blum Center from Berkeley, only recently founded from a seed grant. There are also centers at UC Davis, and UCLA. The Blum Center will have a specific focus on the Central Valley’s future prosperity. By utilizing interdisciplinary expertise from students with all different backgrounds, the Blum Center will be able to exercise a wide variety of projects in both Engineering Service Learning and Capstone projects. The Blum Center provides a unique perspective because of its location and high concentration of first generation college students.

=== Engineers for a Sustainable World - KivaGreen ===

The KivaGreen project falls under the class titled ‘Engineers for a Sustainable World’ and is partnered with the nonprofit organization, Kiva. This project falls under Engineering Service Learning. This project has two primary goals: to function as a student trustee group for a subsidiary of Kiva, KivaZip, and to develop an environmental assessment tool for Kiva, a “Green Badge.” The student trustees endorse borrowers to be profiled on Kiva’s website where they can obtain crowd-sourced zero-interest microloans. The Green Badge is being adapted to include U.S. and global environmental standards, whose ultimate goal is to be used ubiquitously from all trustees to contribute to Kiva’s existing badge system. The badges are awarded to deserving borrowers and are meant to highlight certain aspects of businesses that may sway otherwise reluctant lenders.

=== Community Development and Analytics ===

The Development and Analytics team falls within the Engineering Service Learning program, much like KivaGreen. According to their website, the team is working with the  Merced County Office of Planning and Community Development department to create solutions and opportunities in managing the land at the Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center--which only recently came under ownership of Merced County. The team works to bring businesses into Merced County through the Castle Development Center. They must ensure that information about land, leases, building codes, etc. is readily accessible for their clients. The team is researching this critical information through paper, phone calls, and site visits. Their ultimate mission is to provide an ArcGIS based tool to handle all of this information, and present it in an effective manner.

= Overview =

The University of California, Merced has an unprecedented opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation in California's Central Valley. As most of the campus has yet to be built, UC Merced has the physical space necessary to facilitate a variety of programs in the interest of progressing entrepreneurial spirit on campus, whether that be new research centers, maker spaces, or incubators. Whatever the future holds, the newest University of California campus already hosts forward-thinking programs to encourage its own environmental sustainability and the surrounding region's economic development. UC Merced's faculty and administration actively enact participate in various strategies in pursuit of these goals, including the Pathways to Innovation program, and its dedication to environmental sustainability in ensuring its buildings are LEED certified. UC Merced’s Leadership Circle has determined the following strategies to be top priorities for growth of UC Merced's innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in the future.

== ESL Curriculum/Innovate to Grow ==

The Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program (ESL) currently hosts skills sessions that mostly support engineering students, e.g. CAD, Content Managment Systems, etc. What can be attained in the near future is the integration of entrepreneurial skills sessions that would allow the mostly engineering participants within ESL to gain skills that they wouldn't otherwise attain in their other coursework, for example:

*Project Management
*Rapid Prototyping and Brainstorming techniques
*Pitch Development
*Intellectual Property
*Business Plan
*Organizational Strategy

This additional coursework can be constructed through coordination with professors from UC Merced's Management Program. The professors with the most background in the entrepreneurship field are Dr. S.A. Davis and Dr. Theofanis Tsoulouhas. With their support, entrepreneurial skills sessions can be successfully created and implemented within two semesters, pending administrative approval. The Director of ESL, Christopher Butler, has already expressed his support for incorporating new sessions, after a concrete plan has been developed. Eventually, these skills sessions can be used to supplement the Innovate to Grow design competition, which overall encompasses not only ESL, but also the Innovation Design Clinic (Capstone), and the Mobile App Challenge. Students would have the option to attend these skills sessions which would aid their pitches during the competition, but more importantly, would supplement their overall skills within their tenure at UC Merced.

== Maker Space ==

=== Betaversity Beta Box ===

Betaversity has already worked with a UC Merced sister school, UC Davis. It has set precedent for working with the University of California system, and more beneficially, can provide a Beta Box. Beta Boxes are storage containers that have been modified to be self-contained maker labs in themselves. A Beta Box creates several solutions for bringing a maker space to UC Merced: 

*Customizable
*Easily implementable
*Addresses limited space concerns

Beta Boxes are customizable to the space that they are in, and can be adjusted to fit the specific needs of UC Merced's campus. Because they have been pre-built and exist in standalone containers, they are also easily implementable and can be introduced immediately. Finally, Beta Boxes address limited space concerns in that no new buildings or existing space need to be built in order to implement a maker space. Regardless of whether UC Merced chooses to utilize the Beta Box, Betaversity's consultation will be an invaluable resource for developing UC Merced's maker space. 

=== Modify Existing Space ===

Currently a space with similar goals of encouraging innovation exists on UC Merced's campus, and that is the Engineering Service Learning lab. However, it is only open to students currently enrolled in ESL. This lab could be modified to incorporate more of the features typical for maker spaces including simple arts and crafts supplies, and welcoming the rest of the campus to use the lab through various events, which will be mentioned below. If open to the student body at large, the lab would allow students to have a common meeting place to work on creating, designing, etc. 

Other space remains seasonally unused, for example, the art spaces in the Social Sciences and Management building. Although sometimes occupied, this space is mostly unused and sits empty until the faculty currently in charge decide to display art. This gallery space is easily accessible on the first floor of the building and would be an ideal location to modify to establish a maker's space. 

=== Integrate Maker Space into New Buildings ===

The last option for the implementation of a maker's space is to find a way to incorporate its design into future buildings that the administration is planning to build on campus. This is likely the most long-term option of the three but can also be the most feasible as it would allow for the consultation of Betaversity to help design and budget the integration of a maker space. It would also allow for more planning to occur as well as the opportunity for funding specific to this end. The Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program (ESL) currently hosts skills sessions that mostly support engineering students, e.g. CAD, Content Managment Systems, etc. What can be attained in the near future is the integration of entrepreneurial skills sessions that would allow the mostly engineering participants within ESL to gain skills that they wouldn't otherwise attain in their other coursework, for example:

This additional coursework can be constructed through coordination with professors from UC Merced's Management Program. The professors with the most background in the entrepreneurship field are Dr. S.A. Davis and Dr. Theofanis Tsoulouhas. With their support, entrepreneurial skills sessions can be successfully created and implemented within two semesters, pending administrative approval. The Director of ESL, Christopher Butler, has already expressed his support for incorporating new sessions, after a concrete plan has been developed. Eventually, these skills sessions can be used to supplement the Innovate to Grow design competition, which overall encompasses not only ESL, but also the Innovation Design Clinic (Capstone), and the Mobile App Challenge. Students would have the option to attend these skills sessions which would aid their pitches during the competition, but more importantly, would supplement their overall skills within their tenure at UC Merced.

*Easily implementable
*Addresses limited space concerns

Beta Boxes are customizable to the space that they are in, and can be adjusted to fit the specific needs of UC Merced's campus. Because they have been pre-built and exist in standalone containers, they are also easily implementable and can be introduced immediately. Finally, Beta Boxes address limited space concerns in that no new buildings or existing space need to be built in order to implement a maker space. Regardless of whether UC Merced chooses to utilize the Beta Box, Betaversity's consultation will be an invaluable resource for developing UC Merced's maker space.

Currently a space with similar goals of encouraging innovation exists on UC Merced's campus, and that is the Engineering Service Learning lab. However, it is only open to students currently enrolled in ESL. This lab could be modified to incorporate more of the features typical for maker spaces including simple arts and crafts supplies, and welcoming the rest of the campus to use the lab through various events, which will be mentioned below. If open to the student body at large, the lab would allow students to have a common meeting place to work on creating, designing, etc. 

Other space remains seasonally unused, for example, the art spaces in the Social Sciences and Management building. Although sometimes occupied, this space is mostly unused and sits empty until the faculty currently in charge decide to display art. This gallery space is easily accessible on the first floor of the building and would be an ideal location to modify to establish a maker's space.

There is no formal emphasis, major, or minor available at UC Merced in the field of entrepreneurship. However, UC Merced offers a course in Entrepreneurship (MGMT 180) under the E&J Gallo Management Program which encourages students to experience the creative process behind creating new products, crafting business plans, and delivering pitches. Starting in spring semester 2014, management and economics students from this program have begun collaborating with engineering students in the Capstone program. They will help Capstone groups to monetize and market their products.

The School of Engineering hosts a class on intellectual property law, ENGR 192, that convenes on Saturdays. This class is intended for engineers and teaches them aspects of patent and intellectual property law which are applicable towards undergraduate and graduate studentswho are planning to pursue a career in research and technology. Innovate to Grow is the final competition that encompasses:

Capstone Design / Innovation Design Clinic (ME 170) is a course in which engineering students form teams and compete against each other as part of a competition.The Innovation Design Clinic, aka Capstone, is somewhat similar to the Engineering Service Learning program except that Capstone is more structured--engineering students are placed into teams that are tasked with creating specific projects. Together, they create a solution to a problem that has been designated to them by either industry or by course advisors. Teams are interdisciplinary; they include engineers, but also students from management and economics backgrounds. Twenty-three of the best teams are then chosen to compete inInnovate to Grow.

Under the School of Engineering, the Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program allows student groups to exercise their creative problem-solving abilities and project management skills while earning units. Student teams partner with community stakeholders under faculty advisors and exercise a great level of independence. Student teams are generally self-organized. Though their respective projects are guided by faculty advisors, in general they determine their own course of action, organization, and short-term goals. This forces them to think innovatively and run their projects like entrepreneurs. Students from all majors are welcome to join the program, if they choose. At the end of the semester, the three best Engineering Service Learning teams will be participating in the Innovate to Grow competition.

The Mobile App Challenge is a competition hosted by CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society. CITRIS is an institution at UC campuses that helps groundbreaking research obtain funding and helps to incubate research into startups. Students form teams to develop mobile apps that can solve a variety of issues to their choosing. The Software Engineering course (CSE 120) in the School of Engineering is required to participate in the challenge. Teams compete for a cash prize in front of a panelist of judges--the top 5 teams of the Mobile App Challenge then move on to compete in Innovate to Grow.

CITRIS is a program that is headquartered at Berkeley, but has centers at Davis, Merced, and Santa Cruz campuses. CITRIS is an institution at UC campuses that helps groundbreaking research obtain funding and helps to incubate research into startups. CITRIS has four primary initiatives: Energy, Democracy, Infrastructure, and Health. Its mission is to benefit each initiative with further integration with information technology by helping to fund research related to its initiatives. Through these four initiatives, CITRIS provides the support necessary to help provide solutions for California and the global community at large. CITRIS is also responsible for sponsoring the Mobile App Challenge, where the top 5 teams move on to the Innovate to Grow competition.

The Blum Center at UC Merced is an extension of the original Blum Center from Berkeley, only recently founded from a seed grant. There are also centers at UC Davis, and UCLA. The Blum Center will have a specific focus on the Central Valley’s future prosperity. By utilizing interdisciplinary expertise from students with all different backgrounds, the Blum Center will be able to exercise a wide variety of projects in both Engineering Service Learning and Capstone projects. The Blum Center provides a unique perspective because of its location and high concentration of first generation college students.

=== Engineers for a Sustainable World - KivaGreen ===

The KivaGreen project falls under the class titled ‘Engineers for a Sustainable World’ and is partnered with the nonprofit organization, Kiva. This project falls under Engineering Service Learning. This project has two primary goals: to function as a student trustee group for a subsidiary of Kiva, KivaZip, and to develop an environmental assessment tool for Kiva, a “Green Badge.” The student trustees endorse borrowers to be profiled on Kiva’s website where they can obtain crowd-sourced zero-interest microloans. The Green Badge is being adapted to include U.S. and global environmental standards, whose ultimate goal is to be used ubiquitously from all trustees to contribute to Kiva’s existing badge system. The badges are awarded to deserving borrowers and are meant to highlight certain aspects of businesses that may sway otherwise reluctant lenders.

The Development and Analytics team falls within the Engineering Service Learning program, much like KivaGreen. According to their website, the team is working with the  Merced County Office of Planning and Community Development department to create solutions and opportunities in managing the land at the Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center--which only recently came under ownership of Merced County. The team works to bring businesses into Merced County through the Castle Development Center. They must ensure that information about land, leases, building codes, etc. is readily accessible for their clients. The team is researching this critical information through paper, phone calls, and site visits. Their ultimate mission is to provide an ArcGIS based tool to handle all of this information, and present it in an effective manner.

Capstone Design / Innovation Design Clinic (ME 170) is a course in which engineering students form teams and compete against each other as part of a competition.The Innovation Design Clinic, aka Capstone, is somewhat similar to the Engineering Service Learning program except that Capstone is more structured--engineering students are placed into teams that are tasked with creating specific projects. Together, they create a solution to a problem that has been designated to them by either industry or by course advisors. Teams are interdisciplinary; they include engineers, but also students from management and economics backgrounds. Twenty-three of the best teams are then chosen to compete inInnovate to Grow.

Under the School of Engineering, the Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program allows student groups to exercise their creative problem-solving abilities and project management skills while earning units. Student teams partner with community stakeholders under faculty advisors and exercise a great level of independence. Student teams are generally self-organized. Though their respective projects are guided by faculty advisors, in general they determine their own course of action, organization, and short-term goals. This forces them to think innovatively and run their projects like entrepreneurs. Students from all majors are welcome to join the program, if they choose. At the end of the semester, the three best Engineering Service Learning teams will be participating in the Innovate to Grow competition.

By utilizing interdisciplinary expertise from students with all different backgrounds, the Blum Center will be able to exercise a wide variety of projects in both Engineering Service Learning and Capstone projects. The KivaGreen project falls under the class titled ‘Engineers for a Sustainable World’ and is partnered with the nonprofit organization, Kiva. This project falls under Engineering Service Learning. This project has two primary goals: to function as a student trustee group for a subsidiary of Kiva, KivaZip, and to develop an environmental assessment tool for Kiva, a “Green Badge.” The student trustees endorse borrowers to be profiled on Kiva’s website where they can obtain crowd-sourced zero-interest microloans. The Green Badge is being adapted to include U.S. and global environmental standards, whose ultimate goal is to be used ubiquitously from all trustees to contribute to Kiva’s existing badge system. The badges are awarded to deserving borrowers and are meant to highlight certain aspects of businesses that may sway otherwise reluctant lenders.

The team works to bring businesses into Merced County through the Castle Development Center. They must ensure that information about land, leases, building codes, etc. is readily accessible for their clients. The team is researching this critical information through paper, phone calls, and site visits. Their ultimate mission is to provide an ArcGIS based tool to handle all of this information, and present it in an effective manner.

Capstone Design / Innovation Design Clinic (ME 170) is a course in which engineering students form teams and compete against each other as part of a competition.The Innovation Design Clinic, aka Capstone, is somewhat similar to the Engineering Service Learning program except that Capstone is more structured--engineering students are placed into teams that are tasked with creating specific projects. Together, they create a solution to a problem that has been designated to them by either industry or by course advisors. Teams are interdisciplinary; they include engineers, but also students from management and economics backgrounds. Twenty-three of the best teams are then chosen to compete inInnovate to Grow.

Under the School of Engineering, the Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program allows student groups to exercise their creative problem-solving abilities and project management skills while earning units. Student teams partner with community stakeholders under faculty advisors and exercise a great level of independence. Student teams are generally self-organized. Though their respective projects are guided by faculty advisors, in general they determine their own course of action, organization, and short-term goals. This forces them to think innovatively and run their projects like entrepreneurs. Students from all majors are welcome to join the program, if they choose. At the end of the semester, the three best Engineering Service Learning teams will be participating in the Innovate to Grow competition.

Headed by Professor YangQuan Chen, student Lab Technician Interns and Undergraduate researchers work collaboratively with Graduate students to produce the most efficient and reliable systems possible.  The entrepreneurial spirit which guides the lab can be summed up by the following:  “Try to be the first to test and solve new problems; if your work is not the first of its kind, make sure that your solutions/research are the best.”

This Office works to inform faculty about proper methods ensure intellectual property rights during the disclosure of inventions or patent-worthy discoveries. It also assist the faculty to create a record of invention (ROI) statement, filing the ROI with the UCOP database, and conducts the contractual negotiations with industrial partners or venture capitalists. Secondly, the OTT works closely with UCOP Office of IAS accounting staff to assist with financial record keeping, accounts receivable and accounts payable for tech transfer transactions.

== Blum Center - Global California: The World at Home ==

The Blum Center at UC Merced is an extension of the original Blum Center from Berkeley, only recently founded from a seed grant. There are also centers at UC Davis, and UCLA. The Blum Center will have a specific focus on the Central Valley’s future prosperity. By utilizing interdisciplinary expertise from students with all different backgrounds, the Blum Center will be able to exercise a wide variety of projects in both Engineering Service Learning and Capstone projects. The Blum Center provides a unique perspective because of its location and high concentration of first generation college students.

=== Engineers for a Sustainable World - KivaGreen ===

The KivaGreen project falls under the class titled ‘Engineers for a Sustainable World’ and is partnered with the nonprofit organization, Kiva. This project falls under Engineering Service Learning. This project has two primary goals: to function as a student trustee group for a subsidiary of Kiva, KivaZip, and to develop an environmental assessment tool for Kiva, a “Green Badge.” The student trustees endorse borrowers to be profiled on Kiva’s website where they can obtain crowd-sourced zero-interest microloans. The Green Badge is being adapted to include U.S. and global environmental standards, whose ultimate goal is to be used ubiquitously from all trustees to contribute to Kiva’s existing badge system. The badges are meant to highlight certain aspects of businesses that may sway otherwise reluctant lenders.

=== Community Development and Analytics ===

The Development and Analytics team falls within the Engineering Service Learning program, much like KivaGreen. According to their website, the team is working with the  Merced County Office of Planning and Community Development department to create solutions and opportunities in managing the land at the Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center--which only recently came under ownership of Merced County. The team works to bring businesses into Merced County through the Castle Development Center. They must ensure that information about land, leases, building codes, etc. is readily accessible for their clients. The team is researching this critical information through paper, phone calls, and site visits. Their ultimate mission is to provide an ArcGIS based tool to handle all of this information, and present it in an effective manner.

There is no formal emphasis, major, or minor available at UC Merced in the field of entrepreneurship. However, UC Merced offers a course in Entrepreneurship (MGMT 180) under the E&J Gallo Management Program which encourages students to experience the creative process behind creating new products, crafting business plans, and delivering pitches. Starting in spring semester 2014, management and economics students from this program have begun collaborating with engineering students in the Capstone program. They will help Capstone groups to monetize and market their products.

The School of Engineering hosts a class on intellectual property law, ENGR 192, that convenes on Saturdays. This class is intended for engineers and teaches them aspects of patent and intellectual property law which are applicable towards undergraduate and graduate studentswho are planning to pursue a career in research and technology. The course examines the laws behind Intellectual Property, covering material on:

Innovate to Grow is the project competition that encompasses three of the best teams from Engineering Service Learning, five from Mobile App Challenge, and twenty-three from Innovation Design Clinic - Capstone. They will compete in a poster and presentation competition. On May 16th, judges will decide the overall winner from all three of the programs.

Capstone Design / Innovation Design Clinic (ME 170) is a course in which engineering students form teams and compete against each other as part of a competition.The Innovation Design Clinic, aka Capstone, is somewhat similar to the Engineering Service Learning program except the program is more structured--engineering students are placed into teams that are tasked with creating specific projects. Together they create a solution to a problem that has been designated to them by either industry or by the course. Teams are cross disciplinary in the sense that they have students from management and business backgrounds integrated into their respective team. Twenty-three teamsthen presented to the general public and investors at the annual Innovation to Grow event.

Under the School of Engineering is the Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program, which allows student groups to exercise their creative problem-solving abilities and project management skills while earning units. Student teams partner with community stakeholders under faculty advisors and exercise a great level of independence. Though their respective projects are guided by faculty advisors, in general they determine their own course of action, organization, and short-term goals. Student teams are generally self-organized. This forces them to think innovatively and run their projects like entrepreneurs. Students from all majors are welcome to join the program, if they choose. At the end of the semester, the three best Engineering Service Learning teams will be participating in the Innovate to Grow competition.

The Mobile App Challenge is a competition hosted by CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society. CITRIS is an institution at UC campuses that helps groundbreaking research obtain funding and helps to incubate research into startups. Students form teams to develop mobile apps that can solve a variety of issues to their choosing. The Software Engineering course (CSE 120) in the School of Engineering is required to participate in the challenge. Teams compete for a cash prize in front of a panelist of judges--the top 5 teams of the Mobile App Challenge then move on to compete in Innovate to Grow.

This is a pitch event where students have 20 minutes to present 20 slides based on a project that they’re a part of--which is more geared towards those students already participating in Mobile App Challenge, Engineering Service Learning, and Capstone but can be more broadly applied to students with any significant project that they wish to present. Student researchers may also find themselves as a part of the project. This event is meant to help students exercise their presentation giving skills and to reward those who are successful in both their presentation and their respective projects. Students compete against one another for a cash prize.

TESUM stands for The Entrepreneurs Society at UC Merced, which is a student-run RCO (Registered Club Organization) which is hosting a pitch competition for students where entrepreneurs can pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The judges are made up of entrepreneurs, IP lawyers and angel investors. The Entrepreneurial Seminar and Pitch fest competition also hosts workshops which are intended to support student entrepreneurs. The competition was partially funded by the student government at UC Merced, ASUCM (Associated Students of UC Merced).

CITRIS has four primary initiatives: Energy, Democracy, Infrastructure, and Health. Its mission is to benefit each initiative with further integration with information technology. Through these four initiatives, CITRIS provides the support necessary to help provide solutions for California and the global community at large. CITRIS is also responsible for sponsoring the Mobile App Challenge, where the top 5 teams moving into the Innovate to Grow competition.

The Blum Center at UC Merced is an extension of the original Blum Center from Berkeley, only recently founded from a seed grant. There are also centers at UC Davis, and UCLA. The Blum Center will have a specific focus on the Central Valley’s future prosperity. By utilizing interdisciplinary expertise from students with all different backgrounds, the Blum Center will be able to exercise a wide variety of projects in both Engineering Service Learning and Capstone projects. The Blum Center provides a unique perspective because of its location and high concentration of first generation college students.

=== Engineers for a Sustainable World - KivaGreen ===

The KivaGreen project falls under the class titled ‘Engineers for a Sustainable World’ and is partnered with the nonprofit organization, Kiva. This project falls under Engineering Service Learning. This project has two primary goals: to function as a student trustee group for a subsidiary of Kiva, KivaZip, and to develop an environmental assessment tool for Kiva, a “Green Badge.” The student trustees endorse borrowers to be profiled on Kiva’s website where they can obtain crowd-sourced zero-interest microloans. The Green Badge is being adapted to include U.S. and global environmental standards, whose ultimate goal is to be used ubiquitously from all trustees to contribute to Kiva’s existing badge system. The badges are meant to highlight certain aspects of businesses that may sway otherwise reluctant lenders.

The team works to bring businesses into Merced County through the Castle Development Center. They must ensure that information about land, leases, building codes, etc. is readily accessible for their clients. The team is researching this critical information through paper, phone calls, and site visits. Their ultimate mission is to provide an ArcGIS based tool to handle all of this information, and present it in an effective manner.

There is no formal emphasis, major, or minor available at UC Merced in the field of entrepreneurship. UC Merced offers a course in Entrepreneurship (MGMT 180) under the E&J Gallo Management Program which encourages students to have experience creating products, crafting business plans, and delivering pitches. Starting in Spring semester 2014, management and economics students from this program have begun collaborating with engineering students in the Capstone program. They will help Capstone groups to find ways to market their products.

=== Intellectual Property for Engineers and Scientists ===

The School of Engineering hosts a class about intellectual property that convenes on Saturdays. ENGR 192 is a class that is intended for engineers which teaches them the aspects of patent and intellectual property law. It is geared towards undergraduate and graduate students who may pursue a career in research and technology. They examine the laws behind Intellectual Property, covering material on copyrights for technology protection, trademarks, trade secrets, patent information including the patenting process, claim drafting, design patents, engineering ethics, and more.

== Innovate to Grow ==

Innovate to Grow is the project competition that encompasses three of the best teams from Engineering Service Learning, five from Mobile App Challenge, and twenty-three from Innovation Design Clinic - Capstone. They will compete in a poster and presentation competition. On May 16th, judges will decide the overall winner from all three of the programs.

Capstone Design / Innovation Design Clinic (ME 170) is a course in which engineering students form teams and compete against each other as part of a competition.The Innovation Design Clinic, aka Capstone, is somewhat similar to the Engineering Service Learning program except the program is more structured--engineering students are placed into teams that are tasked with creating specific projects. Together they create a solution to a problem that has been designated to them by either industry or by the course. Teams are cross disciplinary in the sense that they have students from management and business backgrounds integrated into their respective team. Twenty-three teamsthen presented to the general public and investors at the annual Innovation to Grow event.

Under the School of Engineering is the Foster Family Center for Engineering Service Learning program, which allows student groups to exercise their creative problem-solving abilities and project management skills while earning units. Student teams partner with community stakeholders under faculty advisors and exercise a great level of independence. Though their respective projects are guided by faculty advisors, in general they determine their own course of action, organization, and short-term goals. Student teams are generally self-organized. This forces them to think innovatively and run their projects like entrepreneurs. Students from all majors are welcome to join the program, if they choose. At the end of the semester, the three best Engineering Service Learning teams will be participating in the Innovate to Grow competition.

The Mobile App Challenge is a competition hosted by CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society. CITRIS is an institution at UC campuses that helps groundbreaking research obtain funding and helps to incubate research into startups. Students form teams to develop mobile apps that can solve a variety of issues to their choosing. The Software Engineering course (CSE 120) in the School of Engineering is required to participate in the challenge. Teams compete for a cash prize in front of a panelist of judges--the top 5 teams of the Mobile App Challenge then move on to compete in Innovate to Grow.

This is a pitch event where students have 20 minutes to present 20 slides based on a project that they’re a part of--which is more geared towards those students already participating in Mobile App Challenge, Engineering Service Learning, and Capstone but can be more broadly applied to students with any significant project that they wish to present. Student researchers may also find themselves as a part of the project. This event is meant to help students exercise their presentation giving skills and to reward those who are successful in both their presentation and their respective projects. Students compete against one another for a cash prize.

=== Entrepreneurial Seminar and Pitchfest Competition - TESUM ===

TESUM stands for The Entrepreneurs Society at UC Merced, which is a student-run RCO (Registered Club Organization) which is hosting a pitch competition for students where entrepreneurs can pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. The judges are made up of entrepreneurs, IP lawyers and angel investors. The Entrepreneurial Seminar and Pitch fest competition also hosts workshops which are intended to support student entrepreneurs. The competition was partially funded by the student government at UC Merced, ASUCM (Associated Students of UC Merced).
