The inspirational events and workshops are usually held by student organisations and clubs such as Entrepreneurship Club, IEEE and IES rather than the faculties and administration. The school has Global Leadership and Learning Program is a certificate program that trains students to live and create 21st century campus experience and be active global citizens. The campus houses Koç University Arçelik Research Center for Creative Industries (KUAR) which does not engage a large number students in the creative processes but still creates opportunities for a selected group of students.

They provide legal advice and project managementfor granted projects. They offer help in patent and licence application processes, direct the entrepreneurs to the KWORKS Incubation Center. The directorate has connections with the 17 research centers, 5 research forums and 1 support center of Koc University and they ensure the connection and communication between them and researchers in Koc University.

The Koc University Research, Project Development and Technology Transfer Directorate helps the project owners develop business plans. The research infrastructure of the university is open to applications of industrial organisations’ use. The coordinator of this kind of use of university’s resources is RPDTTD and the available research centers for this purpose are: Koc University TÜPRAŞ Energy Center and Koc University Surface Technologies Research Center. On the other side, the school is quite insufficient in bringing students’ and faculty members’ entrepreneurial ideas together with industry. The only channel for this purpose is, again, KWORKS.

= Intro =

Creating software development communities in our universities is becoming a very important step towards improving our institutions and aiding the standard teaching methods. Technology does not wait, and neither should students. Many professors and curriculums are still behind on emerging technologies so by creating these communities not only are we provoking change, we are also giving students opportunities to go beyond what is being taught. We interviewed [http://universityinnovation.org/wiki/Isaac_Griswold-Steiner Isaac Griswold-Steiner], a fellow from Texas Tech University, to get some pointers on how to start a software development club.

= Need and Goal =

What universities teach and what engineers face in the sector are different from each other. In the courses, we are usually taught more theoretical aspects of the topics, so the tools and the interactions with the teammates are unusual for the new graduates. A software development community provides the students the opportunity to learn the tools used in the software sector, get hands-on experience on them and meet with other people who are interested in learning about these things.

= Academic Permission =

Getting an academic permission to form a club might have different conditions and processes for different universities. You will need some board members in general and an advisor professor. Keeping the number of core officers as small as the administration lets is a good approach since it will decrease the amount of bureaucracy. Choosing an advisor professor who will try to contribute rather than control will be so helpful.

= Support =

First of all, it is necessary to enroll students in the community. To do it you can start by showing them the advantages of learning practical skills, what they will do with those, and how it is valuable for the industry also to find an internship. Then it is crucial that you find team leaders, knowledgeable people in their areas that are also good at teaching, and show them how much they can learn by teaching in the community. Finally, just keep enrolled the students by teaching different things, and keep them for many periods, then everyone will start seeing the results of their efforts.

Ceren Kocaogullar is a Candidate University Innovation Fellow who is studying Computer Engineering and Media & Visual Arts in[[File:Ceren Kocaogullar.jpg|thumb]] Koc University, Istanbul. Some of her focuses are machine learning, teaching methods of computer engineering, and visual design. She is a “GetAheader” in Google’s GetAhead Program: EMEA 2017. Ceren is deeply dedicated about achieving gender equality in opportunities of learning coding as well as in computer engineering. Her personal efforts in this subject led her to be the Vice President of ACM Women Student Chapter of Koc University.

Ceren has been a teaching assistant of COMP130 Introduction to Java Course since her second term in the school. She also has been teaching coding to high school students as a section leader in CSBridge Stanford-Koc University Java Summer Course. This experience led her to think thoroughly about the teaching methods of coding to students from different disciplines. Her efforts contributed to the recent essential curriculum change of the course. She is currently leading a project about making a computer game for teaching the essentials of machine learning to high school students. 

Kocaogullar is passionate about music and is serving the current maestro of the Koc University Orchestra. She makes musical arrangements and compositions, and plays three instruments. She broadcasts a jazz music program in Koc University Radio. Her lifetime goal is to combine her abilities and interests in music, visual arts and computer engineering to create value for people’s lives by building useful, enjoyable and human-centered softwares.
