Boise is one of the [http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mhj45mhlf/15-boise-id/ fastest growing] cities in the United States, and consistently ranks in Forbes' top 10 [http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eddf45gihi/no-2-boise-idaho/ cities for careers] and [http://www.forbes.com/pictures/eddf45edgee/no-7-boise-id/ families]. Boise State University [http://enrollmentservices.boisestate.edu/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2016/02/Census-Day-Enrollment-Profile-Fall-2015-1.pdf serves about 21,000 undergraduates and 3,000 graduate students]. Engineering enrollment has grown by 75%, to 2,847 students, over the past five years. Key partners include Micron Technology, a top 5 semiconductor company with headquarters in Boise, NASA, and Idaho National Laboratories.

*[http://www.gratisaid.org/ Gratis Huminatarian Aid Network] distributes medical supplies to remote regions in Eastern and Central Africa.
*[http://www.adventuredata.com/ Adventure Data] provides real-time avalanche data monitoring for outdoor safety.
*[http://whitneyhansen.com/ Whitney Hansen] provides finanial consulting with a focus on student debt.

[http://cid.boisestate.edu/iec/ The Idaho Entrepreneur Challenge] awards over $100,000 annually in seed funding to student entrepreneurs. Previous winners include:

*[http://www.moto-trax.com/ MotoTrax] designs, manufactures, and sells "snowbikes", a dirtbike/snowmobile crossover
*TimeStage provides staining and imaging technology for microscopes that improves diagnosis and research related to infectious diseases.

= Faculty Entrepreneurship =

*[http://coen.boisestate.edu/magnetic-materials-lab/peter-mullner/ Dr. Peter Mullner] specializes in shape-memory alloys. He recently [http://www.shawmountaintechnology.com/about.html launched a startup] to commercialize solid-state electronic devices based on these materials.
*[http://coen.boisestate.edu/faculty-staff/yanliangzhang/ Dr. Yanliang Zhang] completed [http://coen.boisestate.edu/mse-reu/project-13/ successful prototypes] of a thermoelectric device designed to replace alternators in cars. This work, funded by a Department of Energy grant, should improve fuel economy by 10-15%. Hyundai (or Honda?) is currently working to commercialize this device.
*[http://research.boisestate.edu/uiv/executives-in-residence/ Dr. Kevin Learned] co-founded Idaho's first commercial software company and its first angel investment group.

= University-Industry Collaboration =

This project investigates applications for DNA nanotechnology in the semiconductor industry.
*A year-long Senior Design course partners senior engineering students with an industry sponsor to gain practical industry experience. = University Technology Transfer Office =

[https://research.boisestate.edu/ott/ The Office of Technology Transfer] supports research activities and manages industry relations and intellectual property commercialization for the university.  The office is responsible for the assessment, protection, development and marketing of new inventions for commercial use and facilitates the internal and external relationships that contribute to the process.  The office also supports the advancement of innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development programs and initiatives on campus.

Carson Addison is a junior at Boise State University pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences while working on the University’s first student-run Sustainability Report for the College of Health Sciences. Although he finds the healthcare and hospital setting interesting, prestigious, and admirable, and can truly picture a distant future there, his true passions lie with interactions and connections with people and their life experiences. He lives for the experiences that make life matter, and strives to share those experiences with his peers. This passion can be easily seen when you look at how Carson chooses to spend his time. A wide variety of extracurricular activities spanning multiple different groups of students and interests highlights his relatable personality, inquisitive nature, and passion for all things adventurous and thrilling. A certified Wilderness First Responder, Carson works in all three areas of the Outdoor Program on campus (climbing gym, rental center, and trips) and recently returned from co-leading a 7 day backpacking trip through the Grand Canyon. He competes with the Men’s Club Volleyball team and enjoys traveling to and exploring different cities and universities across the northwest more than the sport itself, although it does a fairly good job of satisfying his extremely competitive side. Greek life, playing and writing music, and having existential conversations with anyone who is willing to sit down and truly participate take up the rest of his time and complete his diverse and well-rounded picture of college life. Although unsure about what the future holds, Carson takes life as it comes to him, with the knowledge that he is prepared and strong enough to roll with the changes and make the most out of what’s been given. His immediate goals are to travel the world, working in the outdoors with people of all different cultures and backgrounds, and make the most out of life while the wanderlust is still strong.
