= Overview— Motivate & Inspire, Especially the Underserved 2 = Alabama State University, founded 1867, is a historically black university located in Montgomery, Alabama. Under the leadership of President William H. Harris, the university continues its role as a purveyor of innovative scholarship, especially in the African American community. Alabama State University considers the NACIE commitment letter as an affirmation of the school’s historical role, and current initiatives to make entrepreneurship a core part of its future strategy. Breaking with orthodoxy, Alabama State University requires faculty to enhance their theoretical knowledge of entrepreneurship with practical experience, through summer internship with entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship has also moved from the exclusive domain of the College of Business Administration (COBA) to become part of a larger university culture. The COBA students are now also allowed the option of choosing either an international business, or entrepreneurship concentration. More recently, the College of Visual & Performing Arts, Health Sciences, and the Communications Department have added entrepreneurship curriculum. The Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Change’s (CEIC) Entrepreneur-In- Residence Lecture Series introduces and motivates student participation in, and understanding of, entrepreneurship. CEIC also sponsors the attendance of 80 College of Business Administration students at the Allen Entrepreneurial Institute in Lithonia, GA. This institute teaches professional etiquette, public speaking, and other educational activities to augment student preparation for business ownership or corporate employment. The College of Business Administration’s partnership with CEIC extends beyond the university gates. Through their jointly administered International Business Summer Camp, 14 rising junior and senior high school students, from rural Alabama, were brought to ASU campus for training. The students were also taken on an international excursion to the Bahamas to further challenge their imagination and international exposure. A second High School Summer Boot Camp brought rising juniors and seniors from an urban setting (Detroit, MI), to entrepreneurship and college readiness immersion camp. Another initiative at COBA’s Center for Disadvantaged Business Enterprises/Supportive Services provides On-The-Job Training programs and other services to minority owned Highway Construction businesses. Through On-The-Job Training, the Center retrains displaced minority workers in Highway Construction. Additionally, COBA’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) provides broader technical and management assistance to small businesses and prospective business owners. In the spirit of the NACIE commitment letter, ASU’s membership in the Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association (AAMA) facilitates a collaborative relationship with local industry. The university organizes faculty and student study-tours, seminars, and workshops with local manufacturers. These include Hyundai, Mercedes Benz, Honda assembly plants, and ThyssenKrupp. = Student Entrepreneurship = Through a curriculum that combines theoretical and practical interdisciplinary learning, ASU offers an Entrepreneurship Minor for both Business and non-Business Major students. Additionally, '''''the Center of Excellence for Entrepreneurship''''' in the '''''College of Business Administration''''' (COBA), in close cooperation with accomplished and successful entrepreneurs, inspires and teaches the entrepreneurial spirit to students through several programs that will contribute to the economic development of the state of Alabama and the broader southern region. *Are there any unique successes (and or challenges) you may wish to highlight? = Conclusion = Alabama State University (ASU) is a small university by population, and does not appear to have the benefit of large budgets that is common in typical Association of American Universities (AAU) member schools. It can however be argued that dollar-for-dollar, ASU derives similar levels of academic and entrepreneurial outputs with its larger counterparts. Even so, there are lessons from larger university innovation programs in scale, impact, program rigor, and access to capital that may be applicable to ASU. The Office of Innovation & Entrepreneurship university innovation case studies should be a good starting point for ASU’s faculty to compare innovative practices. Comments by Ms. Janel Bell Haynes and her colleagues have been instructive in better understanding Alabama State University’s various innovative entrepreneurship programs, as well as the impact of the NACIE commitment letter on the school’s strategic plan and institutional culture. = Overview: =

Case Western Reserve University (also known as CWRU or Case), is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The campus is located 20 minutes west of donwtown Cleveland, in historic University Circle. As of today, CWRU is ranked 37th among nationla universities according to the ''US News & World Report''. CWRU entrollment stands at 4,900 undergrad and 5,800 graduate students.  

CWRU is a member of the Maker School Alliance.

= Strategy #1: Increase awereness of I&E through the SAGES program =

SAGES courses are seminar style classes that all CWRU students are requiered to complete, one during their first year at Case and two additional seminars before they graduate. These classes are intended to help students become better writers by offering a wide variety of seminar topics to choose from. Furthermore, since all students are requiered to take them regardless of major, it is one of the few ways students of different majors get to interact in the classroom. 

Our goal is to work with the SAGES Department and the faculty teaching the seminars to incorporate more I&E elements into some of the existing seminars and to offer seminars focusing soley on I&E. The plan is to create workshops that get students to think creatively, work in teams, solve issues, and/or create things, that select SAGES seminars could incorporate into their curriculum. Workshops requiering physical builds would be held in Think[box], CWRU's brand new innovation center, which would supply all of the requiered materials, tools, and workspace. Not only would this expose students to I&E, but also promote collaboration across majors and highghlight the new Think[box].

There are already a number os seminars focusing on science topics. Our target will most likely be focus on those first as a test-bed for this idea. Some workshop ideas include: popsicle stick buildings, spring powered machines, paper creatinos, simple robots, 3D printed parts, and more.

Case Western Reserve University (also known as CWRU or Case), is a private research university in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. The campus is located 20 minutes west of donwtown Cleveland, in historic University Circle. As of today, CWRU is ranked 37th among nationla universities according to the ''US News & World Report''. CWRU entrollment stands at 4,900 undergrad and 5,800 graduate students.  

CWRU is a member of the Maker School Alliance.

= Strategy #1: Increase awereness of I&E through the SAGES program =

SAGES courses are seminar style classes that all CWRU students are requiered to complete, one during their first year at Case and two additional seminars before they graduate. These classes are intended to help students become better writers by offering a wide variety of seminar topics to choose from. Furthermore, since all students are requiered to take them regardless of major, it is one of the few ways students of different majors get to interact in the classroom. 

Our goal is to work with the SAGES Department and the faculty teaching the seminars to incorporate more I&E elements into some of the existing seminars and to offer seminars focusing soley on I&E. Case Western Reserve Univeristy promotes innovation and entreprenuership to students in a number of ways:

CWRU offers a degree in Entrepernuership through the Weatehrhead School of Buisness as well as minors in Entrepernuership and Innovation. 

CWRU now has the newly built Think[Box] Innovation Center; where students of all degrees and experience leves are encouraged to come and create something. However, the building is on the edge of campus and only a small percentage of students have yet to take advantage of the facility. 

Students are also exposed I&E through several events and competitions that are hosted on campus. The most notable include CWRU Engineering Week, 

= Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Etreprenurship =

Being first a graduate school and research university, CWRU very much encourages their faculty and graduate students to conduct research. Last year alone, more than 1,600 research projects were funded through CWRU and the school currently ranks amongst the top 20 research institutions. The majority of professors lead research laboratories and have many students working for them, graduate but also undergraduate. And research at CWRU covers all possible spectrums, from humanities, to social sciences, to all areas of STEM. However, entrepernuership programs specifically or faculty are difficult to find.

= Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function =

The main resource for support are CWRU LaunchNet and the CWRU Technology Transfer Office in the law school. They provide support for students and faculty and offer a full spectrum of services to assist and lead the succesful commercialization of innovations created at CWRU.

= Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration =

Being located in North-Eastern Ohio, CWRU is centered in one of the best areas for University-Indutry collaboration. 

CWRU has a strong co-op and internship program that promotes and helps pair students with local companies. Many students and companies then bring projects to CWRU for further development. 

CWRU also has a vast network of engaged alumnii who actevily work to increase opportunities at CWRU and bridge the gap between university and industry.

= Engagin With Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts =

There are many local resources to promote development efforts: GLIDE (Great Lakes Innovaiton and Development Enterprise), BioEnterprise. Ohio Third Frontier, LaunchHouse, and Jumpstart are such programs. 

Think[Box] is also open to the public, and commnunity members and local schools are encourged to come in and take advantage of it.

However, though many of the research labs develop innovative ideas and solutions, many of which are patented, most labs do not seek to to further their project and pursue entrepernurual opportunities. A big reason for this is that many labs partner with companies to sponsor reseach, and the solotions developed are the rights of said companies. Yet there are also labs and faculty who have no interest in pursuing the idea to turn it into a start up; who would prefer to keep developing new ideas and publishing papers. Additionally, entrepernuership programs specifically or faculty are difficult to find.

= Strategy #1: Increase awereness of I&E through the SAGES program =

SAGES courses are seminar style classes that all CWRU students are requiered to complete, one during their first year at Case and two additional seminars before they graduate. These classes are intended to help students become better writers by offering a wide variety of seminar topics to choose from. Furthermore, since all students are requiered to take them regardless of major, it is one of the few ways students of different majors get to interact in the classroom. 

Our goal is to work with the SAGES Department and the faculty teaching the seminars to incorporate more I&E elements into some of the existing seminars and to offer seminars focusing soley on I&E. The plan is to create workshops that get students to think creatively, work in teams, solve issues, and/or create things, that select SAGES seminars could incorporate into their curriculum. Workshops requiering physical builds would be held in Think[box], CWRU's brand new innovation center, which would supply all of the requiered materials, tools, and workspace. Not only would this expose students to I&E, but also promote collaboration across majors and highghlight the new Think[box].

There are already a number os seminars focusing on science topics. Our target will most likely be focus on those first as a test-bed for this idea. Some workshop ideas include: popsicle stick buildings, spring powered machines, paper creatinos, simple robots, 3D printed parts, and more.
