Hi! I'm Bret Henkel, a sophomore engineering studnet at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. I am originally from Sacramento, California, where I lived until going to Fox.Things that I am passionate about include community, faith, learning, and travel. Some of my favorite memories are camping with my family in National Parks in the western half of the United States and traveling overseas on missions trips. Closer to home I have had many days of laughter, frustration, and fun working on projects with my friends including cannons, PVC rockets, a "diving bell" at the bottom of the pool, an arcade table using a Raspberry Pi, a popsicle stick bridge, and a forge to melt aluminum.

I am studying mechanical engineering, but taking a few classes in both computer and biomedical engineering, other fields that fascinate me. I hope that during my time at George Fox I am able to pursue more projects with my friends where I can grow alongside them in knowing Jesus, in understanding the world, and in helping others.
{{#Widget:Youtube|id=eteUXDYeI7Y}}

= Overview =

Many of the student priorities at George Fox University are centered around the Maker Hub. We want this space to live up to its name as a "hub" of innovation and entrepreneurship on campus, and to ensure that it is being used to its fullest potential. We also want interdisciplenary students to be able to take advantage of this resourse, so that students with different talents can pool their resources and make something truely special.

= Strategy #1: Enhancing and Facilitating Student Access to Resources
=

'''Description'''

The engineering staff envision the Maker Hub as a space for everyone in the University to use, not just engineers. Currently, all engineering students are exposed to resourses available to them in the Maker Hub through online and one on one trainings as part of their Freshman curriculum. The staff is prepared to offer these same opportunities to students outside the major, but those students lack both the knowledge that these resources exist and a reason to learn about them.

== Tactic #1
==

Hold a Maker Event open to all students on campus, and have tables set up with the different tools and machines from the Maker Hub. At these tables there would be sign up sheets to get access to the online FoxTale course for that specific machine. This would allow the students to aquire knowledge on the tools and machines available to them, and a way to access them.

== Tactic #2
==

Develop a student organization focused around making. Give students a problem to solve and a small amount of time to do it and turn them loose. Placing students under pressure will encourage experimentation and promote creativity.

== Tactic #3
==

Host monthly events in the Maker Hub that coicide with an upcoming holiday or season where students can make a specific item with instruction. Any and all students would be allowed to come and learn how to use the different areas of the Maker Hub.

= Strategy #2: Increase Awareness of Current and Potential Resources
=

= Overview =

Many of the student priorities at George Fox University are centered around the Maker Hub. We want this space to live up to its name as a "hub" of innovation and entrepreneurship on campus, and to ensure that it is being used to its fullest potential. We also want interdisciplenary students to be able to take advantage of this resourse, so that students with different talents can pool their resources and make something truely special.

= Strategy #1: Advertise the Maker Hub

== Tactic #1
==

Hold pop-up classes, such as how to use a 3D printer or how to develop a prototype. The Maker Hub's position next to a popular on-campus cafe will be beneficially in spontaniously attracting attention to the classes

== Tactic #2
==

Develop a student organization focused around making. Give students a problem to solve and a small amount of time to do it and turn them loose. Placing students under pressure will encourage experimentation and promote creativity.

== Tactic #3
==

Advertise the Maker Hub in campus publications to encourage students to try it out. Make sure that the entry process is inviting, but tight enough to ensure that students won't abuse the resources.

= Strategy #2: Promote Connections Between Students Across Disciplines
=

'''Description'''

There is a major gap between the departments at our school. Both the faculty and students know about it and want to close it. We can help by creating opportunities for those students to be in the same room. Over time, proximity will lead to the exchange of creativity and the pooling of resources and skills.

== Tactic #1
==

Develop an interdisciplinary club where students meet for guest speakers, socializing, or design challenges.

== Tactic #2
==

Hold a startup weekend for students of different disciplines to work together on a project.

== Tactic #3
==

Develop an online resource for students to use to connect with peers of similar interest.

= Strategy #3: Make I&E More Practical, Accessible, and Applicable
=

= Overview =

George Fox University has a community that is ready to encourage an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. The physical resources and infrastructure have been heavily improved, and hands-on learning is a priority among the faculty. Where it is lacking is in implementation. Students face a lack of resourses and mentoring which makes spinout difficult.

= '''Promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship'''
=

George Fox University promotes many opportunities for students to discover innovation and entrepreneurship. One way this is done is through classes that encourage innovative thinking through projects. These classes include Engineering Principles, a two part class involving semester long team or individual projects designed to expand students open-ended problem solving skills and give them the technical knowledge and resources to design, model, and produce the product. Another engineering class is microprocessors, where students design a completely custom circuit board that does anything they want within the scope of the class. In the business department, George Fox offers a variety of entrepreneurship and start-up focused classes which attempt to be as close to real business settings as possible. In a managerial accounting class students have to create their own hypothetical campground business and present financial projections. There are multiple marketing and entreprenurship classes that give students the opportunity to work on real business projects for real companies. In a manufacturing class offered at the school, students learn about manufacturing processes before visiting a variety of factories so that they may make educated observations and suggestions. All around the business and engineering departments George Fox University has the ability to promote innovation and entrepreneurship through their many communication channels and deep industry connections.

Another avenue for student entrepreneurship is through the newly built Maker's space. The impressive 16,000 sq. ft engineering playground boasts a full machine shop, surveying shop, woodworking equipment, an additive manufacturing and prototype lab, an extensive tool room, and several computer labs. It is here that every freshman engineer learns to build a wobbler engine and compete thier engine against the other engineering freshmen in the infamous Wobble Off. Here students have the opportunity to work on their own projects, from arcade machines to popsicle stick bridges to anything they can think of.

= '''Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship''' =

George Fox faculty focus is on teaching, though some research does happen throughout the school year and is more common in the summer. To advance at George Fox as a faculty member, you need to show quality teaching and some form of continuing scholarship, however scholarship is not required to be research with students, it can be an article in a peer-reviewed journal or a speech at a conference. The faculty do have diverse industrial backgrounds and passion projects, and they are beginning to share those with the students. For instance, a few years ago several faculty members with experience in the developing world have invited students to join them in Peru for a summer service project. The faculty's passion for service has the potential to foster a positive I&E culture on campus.

= '''Actively supporting the university technology transfer function''' =

Unfortunately, George Fox University has no technology transfer office or any means of aiding students in connecting with industry to share new ideas.

= '''Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration''' =

George Fox has connections with many local businesses such as A-dec, Legacy Health, and Nike, to name a few. Employees of these companies serve on advisory boads and attend regular career fairs. Many are also George Fox alums. Classes in manufacturing and start-up style business make trips to see companies practicing the principles they are learning about in class. The engineering program also has close relations with local industry through Senior Design, a capstone class in which senior students develop a product in conjuction with an industry partner.

= '''Engaging with regional and local economic development efforts''' =

Despite our close ties with local industries, George Fox University makes a minimal effort to benefit the community economically. At the beginning of the year, students receive a 'coupon card' with various discounts that students can use at local shops and restaurants, but the focus of this is to plug students into the community, and not necessarily to benefit the local economic development efforts. Some outside contracting is done through the maker's space, print shop, ceramics labs, sporting events, or other resources on campus but very little advertising goes into these functions and they are not widely encouraged.

George Fox faculty do not conduct as much research as most universities because George Fox encourages teaching as a high priority. In order to advance at George Fox as a faculty member, you need to show quality teaching and some form of continuing scholarship, where scholarship is an article in a peer-reviewed journal or at a conference. That said, the faculty have diverse industrial backgrounds and passion projects, and they are beginning to share those with the students. As an example of this, several faculty members with experience in the developing world have been attempting to recruit students for a summer service trip to Peru. The faculty's passion for service has the potential to foster a positive I&E culture on campus.

= '''Actively supporting the university technology transfer function''' =

= '''Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration''' =

George Fox has connections with many local businesses such as A-dec, Legacy Health, and Nike, to name a few. Employees of these companies serve on advisory boads and attend regular career fairs. Many are also George Fox alums. Classes in manufacturing and start-up style business make trips to see companies practicing the principles they are learning about in class. The engineering program also has close relations with local industry through Senior Design, a capstone class in which senior students develop a product in conjuction with an industry partner.

These are classes like Engineering Principles, which is two parts, each part consisting of an end of semester project with an open-ended way to solve a problem; and Microprocessors, where students are allowed to design a completely custom circuit board that does whatever they want as long as they meet a few requirements.

It is here that every freshman engineer learns to build an engine which they will compete against their classmates for a final grade with. It is here students learn to fail. It is here where full-size arcade machines, and pendulum-based clocks are everday personal projects for students across many disciplines.

= '''Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship''' =
