BUmentor is a student counseling project between prep and 1st grades and 3rd and 4th grades. This project is based on senior students mentoring new entry students about their experiences such as classes, Erasmus, careers, internships, and clubs. One of the aims here is to adapt new students to the school as much as possible and to create career awareness. So, how will this program work?

*Students will be matched based on their interests, personality tests, goals, and departments but the goals and department criteria will be considered first.
*Afterward, the mentees and mentors will have a zoom meeting at a time they have determined. If they wish, those who are matched can also meet face to face.
*The meetings will be shaped according to the needs and questions of the mentees, but they can also just chat. The content is a little more up to the mentee and mentor.
*The google forms surveys will be sent to both the mentor and the mentee to follow up on the meetings. They will also be able to rate how satisfied they are with each other.
*At the same time, an event will be organized once a month where all mentees and mentors can come together.
*For new students to get to know a lot of people, their mentors will be changed in each academic semester. Those who want to continue with the same mentor will be considered.
*The aim here is for students to ask their questions to people who have just gained experience and to make friends.
*Mentors and mentees are more likely to be friends because their ages are close to each other. For this reason, we prefer mentors and mentees to become friends so that new students can ask about their career goals and school-related problems without hesitation.

The sooner, the better! Since creating opportunities during your journey is essential, we believe that our career, and therefore our career plans, and our awareness of entrepreneurship were and should have been formed at least in high school. However, very few of our friends have awareness about change-making, entrepreneurship, and basic experience.

As members of the Stanford University UIF Boğaziçi University team, we thought about how we can reach high school students who have an entrepreneurial spirit, and how we can increase their awareness, knowledge, and experience on this subject. And we found something new that will not only allow us to reach high school students but also prompt us to take steps to address lack of institutional resources about I&E: extremeDesign Summer School.

extremeDesign is a 2-stage training program. The first stage of the program is theoretical training. In this part of the program, we will proceed with a focus on sharing and we will try to support the participants with additional resources, and this attitude will continue in every part of the theoretical training. Likewise, we need to convey that the theoretical education will progress together with the practices. At this stage, we can say that the program of our university friends and the programs of our high school friends are quite different from each other as it is needed. The contents of both theoretical education and practice program are like following.

* '''Basic Skills Course:''' We found that our high school fellows, especially those who do not already have experience, often do not have the basic competencies to develop a project, and we wanted to give them a specially designed crash course on this subject instead of pulling them out as many other training programs do.

You can think of this part of the training as an accelerated and condensed version of the Fire Up Changemakers program. We plan to teach the Problem Defining/HMW techniques to the participants at the beginning of the process, and then to transfer the Brainstorming and Prototyping techniques to the participants. Participants will be supported at every stage of Design Thinking with practices and assignments as in Fire Up.

* At this stage, it would not be wrong to say that the challenges of high school and university students on this issue are very different from each other. High school students will deal with real cases and real solutions that will be requested from institutions that are suitable for their level and that are experts in their fields. University students, on the other hand, will progress through real problems that will require interdisciplinary work, good teamwork and research. For example, they will try to solve the irrigation problem in a field in Istanbul, or they will try to reduce health expenditures in a disadvantaged region, while trying to improve the quality of health care. High school students will present their projects to relevant institutions or professionals. However, university students will be focused on prototype production, which will require advanced creativity and collaboration. In the project development process, high school students will have the opportunity to gain internships from relevant institutions, while university students will be able to benefit from all the opportunities of Boğaziçi University Entrepreneurship Center if they are successful in their projects.

In our school, there is a lack of theoretical education on innovation and entrepreneurship.

This project aims to improve students' knowledge of innovation and entrepreneurship. There will be classes (seminars) every week. Different instructors from different fields will teach a lesson about that week's topic. For example, a professor of psychology will explain the mindset of an entrepreneur or there will be an affective presentation conference from the human resources department.

We will also create a community from this program. This program may be integrated with another program in our school (Fire Up program). That is, this program may be the prerequisite of Fire Up program. This program will require a selection of students because there are a lot of students interested in entrepreneurship and innovation in Boğaziçi University.

"Every science discipline feeds itself with many other disciplines. This is the key of scientific production."

The project coLab aims to use this theory in terms of innovation, and entrepreneurship. For this goal, coLab provides a communitiy which has three different sessions. These are;

*Learning Sessions - with the aim of learn new things together
*Brainstorming Sessions - with the aim of think together
*Interaction Sessions - with the aim of build together

In this project, the target participants are students, instructors, and staff of our school. We define this community as interdisciplinary and interroles. By the word of interroles, we mean the relationship between staff, instructors, and students. In this community, students is not only a student, the instructor is not only an insturctor, and the staff is not only a personel in school. They all are teammates who learn, think, and build together.

The system works like that;

#A topic about the community wants to learn is determined.
#If necessary a guest is invited, and the Learning Session starts. Insturctors, students, and staff leran together.
#A week after Learning Session, a nwe topic related to Learning Session's topic is determined. This new topic should be about a problem.
#After the topic is determined, participants think, and debate about the possible solutions.
#In the third week, participants make a prototype about the idea which was determined in the Brainstorming Session last week.
#After a presentation to the related instutuions the project is started to apply if it is applicable.

The main target of coLab for students is giving them the opportunity to experience of design-thinking with different role groups. For the instructors, and staff, it gives the opportunity to work on different projects out of their main field.

I designed the Pitching Day event for this. There will be 5 teams, audince and 3 successful juries. We will share an application form for selection of teams using our communication channels. For the event, 3 successful startup co-founders will be contacted and asked to be a jury. The event will be advertised for participants from our communication channels. The event will be in the center's office on our main campus. There will be a 30-minute networking session before the event starts. Here, the owners, the participants and the juries will have the chance to meet. Idea owners will write the type of people they need on a whiteboard. There will be a 5 minute presentation and 5 minute question and answer session in front of the juries. After the presentations are over, participants will be able to talk to them to join their teams.

We will provide office and entrepreneurship training to the 2 winning teams.

Teams selected to work in our incubation center are also experiencing this problem. So I designed the Bright Demo Day event to solve the investment problem of these startups. At this event, there will be teams who selected in Pitching Day and who completed entrepreneurship training in our incubation center. Using the network of Entrepreneurship Center, 3 seed investors will be contacted and offered to be a jury in the event. Then 5 teams will be selected to make presentations in front of the investors. The teams will tell the investors their products, ask for a certain amount of investment and try to convince the investors to make this investment. In fact, the event is similar to the Shark Tank event. Teams that can convince investors will receive investment and will have the opportunity to grow their startups further.

</div><div>There are many factors preventing the development of initiatives at Boğaziçi University.Unnecessary restraint of many places that enable students to work, high student population, high student quota,the lack of financial means of the school, the lack of environment that allows students to be creative.</div><div> As Bright team, we tried to understand the Campus problems at Boğaziçi University by using the Design Thinking method with the support of Turkcell Arıkovanı and our team of 10 people and we started this way with our the Design the Campus project. </div><div>Our aim was to create a small butterfly effect and raise awareness on the one hand.  The students also had the opportunity to realize their ideas.  As a result of the studies, ideas about the development of the campus were formed by the students.  At the end of the first session, they started to think about the needs of the students and their solutions with insight surveys.  Many prototypes have emerged with the support of sustainability and social impact approach to Turkcell Arıkovanı's ideas.  Our students' self-confidence was more fulfilled and they began to use this methodology used by world-renowned companies.</div><div> </div><div>Design thinking, which stands out with its increasing popularity, prepares the ground for the emergence of creative ideas as a methodological approach based on human beings, which enables them to be further developed through prototyping workshops.  All these efforts and the systematic of innovative thinking create an impact that shakes people's stereotyped thinking patterns.  It is not easy to shake and change the thought patterns that have settled over the years and solidified with experience.  Design-oriented thinking avoids the possibility of preventing these patterns from finding new ways and creating new solutions.  Thinking outside of the patterns for innovative problem solving can be achieved.</div><div><br /></div>

It has a culture which promotes students to colloborate and create changes in all fields. Besides this, diversity of student clubs encourage students to work on their interests. Bogazici University hosts 43 Clubs and each student club has to organize an event at least once a week. Thanks to the I&E ecosystem of Bogazici University, most of the student clubs have no trouble finding the money for their events and can have a big impact although the school doesn't provide any official support. Almost all students are a member of at least of one student club, and this improves their creativity in these clubs by organizing events, and applying their skills. In the macro view, BRIGHT (The Entrepreneurship Center) is running the entrepreneurship side of the school by giving a maker space for entrepreneurs, and funding them to innovate more. BRIGHT (The Entrepreneurship Center) defines entrepreneurship as a mindset, a mentality, and a perspective beyond establishing a company. In this way, they set out to show how anyone can be an entrepreneur, no matter where they are and what they are doing. They have done a lot of work since the establishment of the center. The greatest work aiming to spread the entrepreneurial mindset is the Fire Up Changemakers Certificate and Fellowship Program. For instance, the very first basketball game in Turkey was played in Boğaziçi University campus at 1904, and there are also many other examples. Thanks to this leadership, most succesfull students of the Turkey usually prefer to study in Boğaziçi University, this also helps instructors and professors to make their choice for Boğaziçi University. Because all these instructors and professors were educated abroad, there is an international atmosphere in the school. When all these aspects come together, faculties and their members are encouraged to innovate. In addition, Boğaziçi also has entrepreneurship-based courses such as Entrepreneurial Finance and Fintech etc. specific for some departments. </div>

<div><br /></div><div>Boğaziçi University Technology Transfer Office's main goal is to convert business ideas into real startups with the help of TUBITAK Dream Bigg programme. They provide a high range of industrial network, professional mentorships, funding opportunities and coworking spaces provided by TTO's partner Bright Incubation Center. Apart from BRIGHT Incubation Center, many more incubation centers specialized into specific areas of studies were opened in last years such as BÜDOTEK, BÜ Teknopark, Cube Incubation, and Kandilli HEALTH. They do not only help social innovations but also student's high tech projects. They help getting patent and licence processes to BOUN students who own a business idea. They offer education on setting up a company and funding opportunities, and work with academicians and students who'll set up a company. There is a technopark which is opened in 2018 in an industrial park to improve the communication and cooperation with industries more. Moreover, some of the courses are sponsored by related companies to show the real life applications of the materials of the courses. There are also many student clubs which organize many events in partnership with different companies, and start-up. Thanks to these events, students can get the chance of finding internships, and to see what the companies are working about in detail. For instance, COMPEC, IT club of Boğaziçi, has a wide industry network that let students see the dynamics of how industry works and how industrial trends are differentiating according to demands of people. Hundreds of events are being organized at Boğaziçi University thanks to both student clubs and instructors who have a industry background.
The Alumni Center (BUMED) is also a key part of the school in engaging with businesses by using alumni network. With that support; industries, and university members may be at the same place to collaborate in different topics. For example, Sector Days, which is 4 day long event, is organized with the help of BÜMED at Boğaziçi University. Industry leaders at Turkey and Europe attend this event to strengthen reciprocal relationships with the University and students.

I completely agree with the above comment. One of my friends from high school struggled with finding scholarships and resources in order to go to college. == Educational Gap In Low Income Communities ==

There is a massive issue in the economic gap against our marginalized communities. However, because this negative spiral exists it also provides these communities less opportunities to educate and improve their livelihood. In being an individual who came from these communities and was lucky enough to have a good support system around me and being funded by scholarships, it has truly opened my eyes to the injustice and systemic oppression we face.

The honest truth is that I would not have had the courage to consider attending my university if I had not received several scholarships. Many youth in these neighborhoods are not even exposed to these opportunities, I had to scrounge to find these things for myself. I believe being able to provide youth with these opportunities is the not only beneficial morally, but also economically.

It is true that low income students don't receive as much attention as they should. If i didn't have the assistance I wouldn't be where I am right now. Taking advantage of this great opportunity, but it still a struggle to pay for school every now and then and I truly believe that creating one for low income that provides a fair amount of money to make getting their education easier would be so helpful. It would lessen the entering higher in debt every year and needing to work jobs and many hours so all of that energy can be indulged in having more time to study and even innovate. They would be able to unlock more potential they have hidden in them and not make them stress and and have a can't do it attitude.

Making education accessible to all is the need of the hour. There are many children unable to study due to their financial conditions. Many out there dreaming about being educated. While the others not valuing it enough. In the ever evolving world the gap between the rich and poor has widened. This has led to many disadvantaged communities not being able to acquire education .Ironically , the only solution to combat this widened gap in our society is through education. Thus, I would like to propose that education in elementary and middle school be made free of cost or atleast be provided with a fair amount of concession. And in the higher education I would suggest that the students would be given scholarships based on their interest and desire to study .Also lowering the high standards of qualification in the examinations conducted to provide scholarships has to be put into action.

Kumsal Belin was born and raised in Izmir. After graduating from her high school in Izmir with the first place, she continued her education at Bogazici University in Istanbul. She is currently in the first year of economics at Bogazici University.

Besides her academic life, she was also a figure skating national team athlete. She has done figure skating for 8 years. She skated in the Turkish national team for 4 years. She has represented Turkey in Italy, Slovenia, Serbia, Hungary and Bulgaria. She was the international silver medalist in 7th Skate Helena Cup at 2014 and 7 times gold medalist in the Turkish Championships.

The purpose of the channels is to raise awareness of Turkish high school students about education. She has learned how to edit videos and make thumbnail. Also, she established the academic coaching system and has been mentoring Turkish high school students for the university exam. In about 1 year, she mentored nearly 40 students with flexible working hours.

In addition to all these, she is a graduate of the Yetgen program. YetGen is a 4-month program that aims to provide Turkish students with 21st century qualifications. This program includes training on teamwork, effective presentation techniques, excel, basic algorithm, information/media/financial literacy, career planning, active citizenship, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

She has completed The 6-week design thinking training called Fire Up Changemakers program, organized by METU, ITU and Bogazici University entrepreneurship center. The aim of the program was to teach the entrepreneurial steps to the students through a project and introduce her the University Innovation Fellows Program. In Fire Up Changemakers Program, design Thinking stages such as creating "HMW" questions, Persona's, Empathy Map, Business Model Canvas, Prototyping and Brain storming are taught to students.

==Bio==
Eren Anter was born and raised in İzmir. After completing his high school education in Izmir, he started higher education at Bogazici University and moved to Istanbul. He completed the preparatory class last year by passing the BUEPT (Bogazici University English Proficiency Test) with an A, the highest grade. Currently, he is in his first year of undergraduate education at Bogazici University studying Political Science and International Relations.

In his high school years, he was an enterprising, proactive, and multitasking student. The extensive readings in many different disciplines that he started in the 10th grade were noticed by his teachers. Thanks to his predisposition in philosophy, he participated in the 24th Turkish Philosophy Olympics and organized a series of seminars in his school to increase the awareness of high school students about philosophy. In the meanwhile, he was the vocalist and the guitarist of his school band for a year and attended many high school music competitions.

Last year, he attended the YetGen project, which is a 21. Century Skills education program where I acquired basic career skills such as career planning, presentation techniques, teamwork, Excel, and introduction to coding. Also, in an entrepreneurship competition held in YetGen, called GirişGen, his team's business idea was selected as one of the top 20 startup ideas under his leadership. As a reward, he had the opportunity to give a 1-minute elevator speech in the YetGen live broadcast, watched by more than a thousand people. He considers this program as an igniter for himself where he added a lot of skills to his skillset such as presentation techniques, teamwork, leadership, and entrepreneurship.

Also, he has been publishing videos on a Youtube channel named "Kumsal ve Eren" (15K+ Subs). The main purpose of this channel is to raise awareness among Turkish high school students about the university exam. He developed his academic coaching system and has been mentoring for over a year and worked with more than 30 students with flexible hours. Likewise, he was a content creator and a member of Youtube Opencall at BÜYAK (Bogazici University Operations and Research Club).

Recently, he is a Bright Fellow at Bright (Bogazici University Entrepreneurship Center) since he successfully completed the Fire Up Changemakers Program where Design Thinking methods such as creating "HMW" questions, Personas, Empathy Map, Business Model Canvas, Prototyping, and Brainstorming are taught to students and he was chosen as a candidate for Stanford UIF Program. He holds meetings at Bright with his team to spread the entrepreneurial spirit to his campus and support entrepreneurs at Bogazici University under the leadership of Oguzhan Aygoren, the faculty champion.
