Since sophomore year, I worked on and launched a social media platform called LowkeyLinks that allows people to share privately with different cliques in their lives, instead of everyone in one place. Students at Kent State are disconnected. Especially with the projects they are working on.  We want to create a system to connect students working on projects and give them opportunities to work with each other to create.

 

1.     Be supported by 1 department at Kent

2.     Get permission to use a kent.edu/ URL connected to Kents main site

3.     Convince LaunchNET to let us use the department as an extension to our network

4.     Obtain a minimal amount of funding for site support and development

5.     Cross department promotion, also a great tool to get people collaborating in the makerspace

Unfortunately, Kent’s engineering department is lacking.  Currently we have Aeronautics Engineering and and the College of Applied Engineering.  We need more!

 

1.     One obstacle we need to get around is space, another building would be extremely beneficial

2.     Currently, Cleveland State is taking all of Kent’s potential engineering business.  We need to prove the need and how we can obtain those students planning to attend other schools.

3.     Look to other schools as examples in starting a wide range of engineering programs here at Kent.

Currently, although LaunchNET is an extremely valuable resource, it could be a lot more. 

 

1.     LaunchNET has the opportunity to grow into an incubator

2.     Once we can prove that viable products and businesses are coming out of LaunchNET, we can get investors involved.

3.     Creating a fund with local investors using our current resources would give them a first look and opportunity to invest in businesses coming out of Kent State University.

4.     We would need a larger space to give students a place to work and meet up. With the MakerSpace in the works, we are one step closer to making this happen.

5.     Getting Beverly Warren involved would be a must since she is the deciding factor on all big decisions. But once she sees the benefits of the university itself investing in start-ups, she can see the financial potential.

Entrepreneurs can come from anywhere with any type of background.  Just offering it in the business department and excluding it from the rest of the school is wrong.

 

1.     There should be at least one entrepreneurship type of class offered in each school to go along with that subject. 

2.     We would need to make sure it fits the Core Curriculum Program Statement for each school

3.     Meets the characteristics of Core Curriculum courses in terms of prerequisites, frequency of offering, and academic level.

4.     Address all learning outcome: Why it is beneficial and the reason it needs to be introduced into each department.

5.     Provides students with an opportunity to learn in a way not already offered in their current curriculum.

VentureWell E-Team program is a great place for students who are apart of the VentureWell community to obtain funding for their start-up.  Venture well has pretty broad guidelines when deciding what types of E-Teamss to fund, as long as it is in the technology field, you will be able to apply.

== Mission ==

== E-Teams ==

VentureWell defines an E-Team as a “multidisciplinary group of students, faculty, and industry mentors working together to bring a technology-based invention (product or service) to market” 

The amount of members of your E-Team is up to you, the innovator.  But they ask to keep the teams to no more than 6 because the “To many cooks in the kitchen” saying comes into affect. 

== Stages of Funding ==

=== Stage 1 ===

VentureWell picks 50 E-Teams for this round.  In this stage, initial research needs to be submitted justifying your concept along with a value proposition relating to your start-up. $5,000 dollars will be rewarded during this round of funding along with a Stage 1 workshop.

 

=== Stage 2 ===

After moving on from stage 1, you then move to Stage 2 of funding.  In this stage, teams will attend a Stage 2 workshop.  They will also receive $20,000 in grant funding. They will also refine your business plan and concept along with providing venture coaching for your E-Team.  Students will need to send at least 2 members of the team for venture coaching. 

 

=== Stage 3 ===

Based on how far along your start-up is, teams will be accepted for Stage 3 of funding.  In this stage teams will receive training on sector specific partnerships and investment readiness training.  Only 10 teams will be picked for Stage 3.

== Making Sure Your Proposal Fits the Criteria ==

 

-       Your innovative idea needs to be tech related and prove feasibility

-       You need to provide a business model and show commercial potential

-       Your E-Team needs to be diverse and show different levels of expertise in a wide range of areas.  It is also recommended to have a staff advisor from your school give his/her support during the initial stages of your start-up.

-       Your start-up needs to prove it can make a positive impact on the environment or have a positive impact on society.

== Dates to Know ==

Deadlines for Stage 1 occur three times a year.  There are two more opportunities to submit your proposal this year…

My name is Brad Baumeister, and I am currently a student at Kent State Unviersity.  I am majoring in Communication Studies with a concentration in Interpersonal Communication.  I work for NEO LaunchNET on campus which helps students start their businesses while in school.  I am also working on gathering equiptment for our soon to be makerspace on campus.
