Many of the student priorities at George Fox University are centered around the Maker Hub. We want this space to live up to its name as a "hub" of innovation and entrepreneurship on campus, and to ensure that it is being used to its fullest potential. We also want interdisciplenary students to be able to take advantage of this resourse, so that students with different talents can pool their resources and make something truely special.

=Strategy #1: Encourage I&E through emphasis on the problem solving process and employability=

Currently, students are evaluated on their performance with an A-F grading system. The current system encourages students to work until a certain level of performance is attained rather than to learn and enjoy problem solving. We want students to focus on the problem solving process and critical thinking skills. These skills will create professionals that see challenges as learning opportunities and desire to expand entrepreneurship and innovation.

==Tactic #1==

Bring in professional graders to see how the work that students are doing would hold up in an industry setting. This will encourage students to think about improving skills that will be desirable in the workplace, while also networking students to professionals involved in entrepreneurship and innovation in industry.

==Tactic #2==

Encouraging concept based grading to shift students focus from numbers to learning material and critical thinking. This will foster a mindset of continuous improvement, and will encourage students to learn from mistakes. As a result, critical thinking skills that students have developed will encourage entrepreneurship and innovation.

==Tactic #3==

Implement an employability grade that reflects students' effort and predicts their performance in a professional environment. This grade is designed to display to employers how well a student demonstrates an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset while in classes, as well shows that the university is investing in the employability of students. The grade shows students application of knowledge, and thus creates an emphasis on practicality rather than on innovation.

While there are spaces on campus that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, these spaces are either not well known or are not large enough for the growing number of students that will use the space as awareness is brought to it.

Increase the amount of students that use current innovation spaces through more awareness to already existing spaces. Having a greater number and diversity of students in the same spaces will encourage different ideas and contribute to entrepreneurship and innovation.

Expanding innovation spaces to include fishbowls or other study spaces that give students the freedom to "Dream Big" in creating new ideas. These spaces would be smaller and around different locations on campus. This would make students more confident in approaching innovation spaces.

Reorganize current spaces to make them more efficient for student success. Use spaces unfit for student use as storage spaces, and transform old storage spaces into usable innovation spaces.

=Strategy #3: Developing innovation connections between departments on campus=

Many students on campus notice problems in the spaces the live and work, but don't know how to solve them or even that these problems are solvable. We believe that connecting students to innovative spaces would encourage an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset and foster a greater connection between different departments on campus.

Create a club that connects students with a desire to practice problem solving skills with problems that they could solve in other departments, as well as provide a platform where students can learn the necessary skills to solve these problems.

Bring students from multiple departments together to solve smaller problems in the local community. Students could learn about resources available on campus and develop teamwork and communication skills with those in other majors. This would also help students focus on the need for their design, rather than jumping straight into the building process.

A major gap in our I&E ecosystem is that students lack the support necessary to launch new ideas. We may be able to develop those resources to demonstrate that an idea has merit beyond the walls of the University

Create a program where students from multiple majors work together to design a product and create a business model for a competition. Winners of this competition receive support and funding to patent their ideas and launch their business. This will inspire students to dream big and create a realistic proposal, while working with professionals.

Create resources where students can go to receive support for launching new ideas.

Generate incentive for students to try new ideas and put in the work to launch them. This would encourage students to engage in innovation by motivating them and removing their fear of failure.

George Fox University has a community that is ready to encourage an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. The physical resources and infrastructure have been heavily improved, and hands-on learning is a priority among the faculty. Where it is lacking is in implementation; students face a lack of resources and mentoring which makes spinout difficult.

= '''Promoting student innovation and entrepreneurship''' =

George Fox University promotes many opportunities for students to discover innovation and entrepreneurship. One way this is done is through classes that encourage innovative thinking through projects. These classes include Engineering Principles, a two part class involving semester long team or individual projects designed to expand students open-ended problem solving skills and give them the technical knowledge and resources to design, model, and produce the product.  Another engineering class is microprocessors, where students design a completely custom circuit board that does anything they want within the scope of the class.  In the business department, George Fox offers a variety of entrepreneurship and start-up focused classes which attempt to be as close to real business settings as possible. In a managerial accounting class students have to create their own hypothetical campground business and present financial projections. There are multiple marketing and entreprenurship classes that give students the opportunity to work on real business projects for real companies. In a manufacturing class offered at the school, students learn about manufacturing processes before visiting a variety of factories so that they may make educated observations and suggestions. All around the business and engineering departments George Fox University has the ability to promote innovation and entrepreneurship through their many communication channels and deep industry connections. 

Another avenue for student entrepreneurship is through the newly built Maker's space. The impressive 16,000 sq. ft engineering playground boasts a full machine shop, surveying shop, woodworking equipment, an additive manufacturing and prototype lab, an extensive tool room, and several computer labs. It is here that every freshman engineer learns to build a wobbler engine and compete their engine against the other engineering freshmen in the infamous Wobble Off. Here students have the opportunity to work on their own projects, from arcade machines to popsicle stick bridges to anything they can think of. A new modification since 2020 allows all majors at George Fox to take the access quiz to the MakerHub, and utilize the different facilities within. This creates room for innovation to be bridged across disciplines beyond engineering, if executed in a proper manner that teaches all users of the space the full capabilities of being in there.  

= '''Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship''' =

George Fox faculty focus is on teaching, though some research does happen throughout the school year and is more common in the summer. To advance at George Fox as a faculty member, you need to show quality teaching and some form of continuing scholarship, however scholarship is not required to be research with students, it can be an article in a peer-reviewed journal or a speech at a conference. The faculty do have diverse industrial backgrounds and passion projects, and they are beginning to share those with the students. For instance, a few years ago several faculty members with experience in the developing world have invited students to join them in Peru for a summer service project. The faculty's passion for service has the potential to foster a positive I&E culture on campus.

= '''Actively supporting the university technology transfer function''' =

Unfortunately, George Fox University has no technology transfer office or any means of aiding students in connecting with industry to share new ideas. 

= '''Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration''' =

George Fox has connections with many local businesses such as A-dec, Legacy Health, and Nike, to name a few. Employees of these companies serve on advisory boards and attend regular career fairs. Many are also George Fox alums. Classes in manufacturing and start-up style business make trips to see companies practicing the principles they are learning about in class. The engineering program also has close relations with local industry through Senior Design, a capstone class in which senior students develop a product in conjunction with an industry partner.

= '''Engaging with regional and local economic development efforts''' =

Despite our close ties with local industries, George Fox University makes a minimal effort to benefit the community economically. At the beginning of the year, students receive a 'coupon card' with various discounts that students can use at local shops and restaurants, but the focus of this is to plug students into the community, and not necessarily to benefit the local economic development efforts. Some outside contracting is done through the maker's space, print shop, ceramics labs, sporting events, or other resources on campus but very little advertising goes into these functions and they are not widely encouraged.

Jesse was born and raised in Colorado, where she learned from a young age to love and appreciate the outdoors, whether it be fly fishing, backpacking or riding her bike. Despite being a Colorado native, she loves to travel and try things to push her out of her comfort zone. She continues to seek this in her time in college in Oregon. Despite being a math and science fan throughout high school and college, she loves reading and her favorite books are ''The Last Lecture'' and ''East of Eden''. In addition to what we can learn from the design of the mathematical side of things, she also enjoys learning through reading books and human connection.
