[[File:Atle Alexander.jpg|thumb]]Atle Johansen is a Norwegian University Innovation Fellow who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Accountancy from the University of North Dakota (UND) in May 2018.

Atle co-founded several student initiatives in college, including Volunteers Together, a 300+ organization that helps UND students find volunteering opportunities in Grand Forks.

After college, he went to work for EY in Minneapolis and earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licence.

However, being an entrepreneur at heart, he decided to resign from corporate America and co-found a company with his wife, Ayla Xiao.

Today, they run [https://bloopythings.com https://bloopythings.com] together, a website dedicated to help young individuals embrace a simpler style of living.

They provide free, in-depth and beautifully designed guides and resources to help people get organized, establish a healthier relationship with their technology, grow as individuals.

Despite graduating college, Atle has been an involved member of UIF. He's assisted with two meet-ups as a FAB, spoken at Google about the importance of empathy in finding a common vision, and delivered a talk on how to become a change agent in the workforce at Stanford University.

To William, mathematics has described the world with indifferent elegance. He, as a human, cannot hold the weight of indifference. Where mathematics fails in description is where he creates written or visual expression. With the passion of an artist and the thoughts of a writer, he pursues a career in space exploration. The thought to help humanity achieve status as a space fairing civilization hangs on his head.

William is attending York College of Pennsylvania where he is studying mechanical engineering. He has worked in the community and campus on a variety of projects as a member of the Graham Innovation Scholars program at York College. He was accepted into this elite program that focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship as an incoming freshman. Together the group of scholars have founded and run a student business in the beating heart of York City. At its inception William served as the marketing director managing social media accounts and graphic design. Most recently he completed an independent research project on reusable space launch vehicles where he set out to gain a deeper understanding of the emerging field.

For nearly 8 years William has been an amateur graphic designer and for his whole life he has been an artist. The desire felt 40,000 years ago from cave dwellers to draw on rock walls remains as an everlasting itch in William's fingers. It only makes sense he is helping to design a makerspace with walls covered in white boards. A picture is worth a thousand words and when he becomes inspired by his imagination and sees wonder, he attempts to write those thousands of words as poems, stories, and random strings of thought.

Hi!

My name is Miranda Gajda and I am a nursing student at York College of Pennsylvania. I am also a member of the Graham Innovation Scholars on campus.Through this program, we learn how to use design thinking and apply it to our everyday life. This is how I got involved on the University Innovation Fellow program to further my knowledge and ability to work with innovation and entrepreneurship. 

On campus, I am also a First Year Experience Fellow. In this role, I act as a student mentor to the freshman on campus, bridging the gap from high school to college. I present mini-lessons to the class educating them on topics such as time management, fun activities on campus, and housing registration. I also am in charge of planning events for freshman to attend to socialize and meet new people while becoming more comfortable with campus. I am also an Anatomy and Physiology laboratory assistant. Here I help students to understand concepts and teach them study methods for the class. 

I am currently employed at Evangelical Community Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. There I am able to interact with patients and care for them while I attend nursing school. This is a great experience to get more interaction with the field I will eventually work in. I am also employed at Ideal Pediatric and Adolescent Care. This is a pediatric office where I have similar duties as a nursing assistant to triage patients and take their vitals. There I am able to work with pediatric patients and their families. In the future, I hope to work in the pediatric field of medicine. 

In my free time, I am a very active person. I am an avid runner and swimmer competing in community races I also enjoy CrossFit and competing in Crossfit competitions. In the summer I love to participate in the Tough Mudder races for the wounded warrior project.

Hello all! I’m John. In addition to having major X and minor Y, I am very involved at school. I am a Graham Innovation Scholar, Student Senator, and Orientation Leader. I’ve played sax in the jazz band, and currently play string bass in the college's community orchestra.  

Growing up in Reading, PA, I was lucky to have passionate teachers who instilled a love of science and math in me at a young age. I’m forever thankful for Mrs. Lorah who taught me algebra, and forced me to join a science competition in 6th grade! This sparked my love for math and science, which continued through high school. Like any true nerd, physics and calculus were classes that I loved.

Going through school, I learned to love music and languages in addition to STEM subjects. I wanted to study some type of engineering, but I also wanted to go to a college where other interests could be pursued... and York was the perfect fit. Talk to me passionately about something, or show me a TED Talk, and I’m hooked! My interests in lots of things lead me to apply to the Graham Scholars Program at YCP. This is a program for highly motivated students interested in business skills and innovation. In this program, cross collaboration between majors is required, and learning in our cohort classes is project based. The Graham Scholars Program allowed me to take a First Year Seminar about Design Thinking, network with business leaders on day one, participate in a student run business, and APPLY TO UIF! Learning design thinking last year changed how I thought about problem solving and creative confidence. With successful completion of UIF Training, I hope to have the skills to introduce innovation to the entire campus, and bring a creative mindset to every encounter in my life.

In my spare time, I practice German, talk about travel, take pictures, eat chocolate, and practice mindfulness! Language learning has opened so many doors in my life. Currently, I’m starting to apply for co-ops, and hopefully next summer I’ll be working in Germany. Travel to Europe in previous summers has created never-ending Wanderlust in me, and an interest to learn another language. So now I’m taking a Spanish 101, and boy is learning a language from scratch a humbling experience.

Robert Nicholas Vandemark (preferred name Nick) is currently training to become a University Innovation Fellow. Nick attends York College of Pennsylvania (YCP), where he is pursuing a B.S. in Computer Engineering, a B.S. in Computer Science, a minor in Mathematics, and a minor in Physics. Along with his dedication to his education, Nick’s active in one of his campus’ honors program the ''Graham Innovation Scholars'', and he’s also involved in a number of extracurricular activities. These include, but are not limited to:

*Co-organizer of YCPHacks, YCP’s hackathon
*Co-developer of YCP’s first makerspace, the Graham Innovation Zone
*Developing robotics for a local York startup company
*Member of Tech Tinkerers, an initiative that gives young kids the tools and resources they need to learn and get excited about computers and programming

 Nick has lived in Pennsylvania all his life – born in Paoli, lived in Exton until the age of three, and has since moved around in West Chester. Nick was lucky enough to attend B. Reed Henderson High School, recently announced to be the number four public high school in the nation. The environment there promotes creative/hands on learning with a welcoming atmosphere, and gave him the resources he needed to succeed. Because of his experience there and the AP tests that were offered to him, he went into his freshman year at YCP with 45 credits, allowing him to graduate on time with a double major and double minor. Overall, Nick has had a fantastic experience with higher education, something that’s been important to him for a long time.

 

As part of the Graham Innovation Scholar program, Nick was offered a seat in a design thinking class, one that stressed the importance of hands on learning, innovative mindsets, etc. He left this course with a completely different view of efficient business practice and principles. Throughout his college experience, Nick has been offered plenty of great opportunities like these to advance his academic career and shape his future, and he wants to do everything he can to improve his classmates higher educational experience.

Benjamin O’Connor is a Junior at York College of Pennsylvania pursuing a degree in data analytics. Ben grew up in a small town of Pennsylvania. While growing up, Ben worked on a diverse number of projects ranging from woodworking to rebuilding a 67’ Camaro. While not working on projects, Ben loves to train in Mixed Martial Arts and is currently pursuing an A level skydiving certification.

While studying at York College, Ben self-designed the data analytics major. The major combines 3 already existing majors, Mathematics, Intelligence Analysis and Economics. Ben is also involved in the Graham Innovation Scholars program. This program is on the forefront of entrepreneurship mindsets and innovation. While Participating in the Graham Scholars program, Ben helped launch a student run business and traveled to Japan for an in depth cultural learning experience.

Ben's acadamic interests include big data analysis, cyber security and predictive analytics.

Victoria Cox is currently in training to become a University Innovation Fellow at York College of Pennsylvania in York, PA, USA. At YCP, she is pursuing a B.A. in Mass Communication as well as a B.A. in Public Relations, with a Speech Communication Minor. Along with her academic endeavors, Victoria actively engages in several extracurricular activities at York College. She is an Eisenhart Scholar, Student Ambassador, Orientation Leader, and sister of Phi Sigma Sigma. Victoria is also involved with York's theatre department and is the Social Media Chair of WVYC, York College's radio station. 

Originally from a small town in Southern New Jersey, community is a big part of Victoria's life. In high school, Victoria held the pageant title for her town and worked closely with town officials, volunteering at community events and attending town hall meetings. She has been fortunate enough to be able to continue her love of community and service while at York College, volunteering to teach an after school dance program for elementary students, working with a college preparedness outreach program, and coordinating future projects at a local school.

As a part of her scholars program, Victoria was enrolled in a design thinking first year seminar course that completely changed the way she viewed creative thinking and problem solving. The techniques and processes that she learned in that course are things that have stayed with her and greatly impact the way she views every day life. Victoria has a strong belief in the design thinking method and it's ability to get to the route of the problem to create an innovative, useful, and possibly even revolutionary solution. Keeping this into consideration, Victoria wants to have a positive impact on higher education. She has been lucky enough to have access to enlightening and life changing courses, (such as design thinking) as well as Maker Spaces on and off campus, but she knows that students everywhere do not have those luxuries. Victoria believes students should have more opportunities to create, explore, develop, test, and learn - not what is just required of their major studies, but of what interests them as individuals in conjunction with their field of study. As Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun," and students should be able to explore education in a way that will produce never before seen, revolutionary results.

Overview: York College has the possibly to become an institution that fosters design thinking and innovation. To do this will be a lot of work, but it is possible. The faculty here care about their students and want to hear their opinions and ideas. Well here they are! Described on this page is the Three-Phased plan to turn YCP better campus. A better campus is one where we collaborate with each other, learn more about design thinking and innovation, and all have access to resources that will make us better professionals.

 Phase 1: Create Design Thinking Courses

During our experience interviewing freshmen, many of them expressed in design thinking and innovation and entrepreneurship classes. Unfortunately, many of them were unsure of their ability in the field, or didn’t consider themselves creative enough to be a part of entrepreneurship avenues on campus. To remedy this issue we would create design thinking courses on campus. "Design Thinking I" would fulfil a Gen-Ed requirement, potentially Humanitites, Quantitative Fluency, or Arts. It would focus on using design thinking methods to solve a problem on campus. It would be taught similiarly to how "Entreuprenurial Thinking" was taught. "Design Thinking II" would build upon the concepts of "Design Thinking I" to solve a larger problem in the York community. It would be highly encouraged to take "Design Thinking I" before "Design Thinking II". "Design Thinking II" would be the starting point for part II of Phase I, creating custom constellations.

A constellation is a group of 4 classes from a minimum of 3 disciplines. Students could choose these classes that comprise the constellation, allowing for greater flexibility within the discipline. "Design Thinking II" would be required for this custom constellation, and the ideals taught in the class would lend itself to the general theme of the constellation.         

 Phase 2: Graham Innovation Zone

The Graham Innovation Zone (GIZ) is currently under construction and only availible to Graham Scholars, but we see this as a stepping stone in the innovation culture at York College. We intend to use the space to work closely with the Design Thinking classes to further their education. Within the space we can hold specialized classes, workshops, and events to bolster the innovation reputation at York College. This space can also be used as a collaborative zone for other group on campus such as FYS Fellows, RA's, or other students leaders. Working with other student leaders is the final phase of our plan, to create the Center for Collaborative Innovation.

This proposed organization aims to "break down silos within the college's five schools." The goal is to create an organization focused on interdisciplinary collaboration. The Center for Academic Innovation, Center for Community Engagement, Library Technology Services, Leadership Development Center, and the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship would all be brought together to collaborate on ideas to improve the campus. They would have free use of the GIZ. This organizational interdependence can also create a collaborative climate for other groups on campus. We believe the school will have better results the more different campus organizations work together, and this programs aims to create that mentality.

[[File:Hinkel 2.jpg|thumb|260x200px]]University Innovation Fellow Ben Hinkel is a junior undersgraduate student at York College of Pennsylvania (YCP). He is currently pursuing a major in International Relations with a minor in Intelligence Analysis. Born and raised in the rural area of Ashland, Pennsylvania, his interest in International Relations was peaked through a student exchange program he participated in with his school's sister school in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Ben is very involved at YCP. He is a member of the Graham Scholars program which focuses on innovation on the YCP campus. Furthermore, he is a memeber of the track team, where he and his teammates hold a record in the 4x800 meter relay. While on campus, Ben is also a Resident Assisstant and a First Year Seminar Fellow, where he aids freshmen with their transition into college. Finally, Ben is a member of Alpha Chi, a prestigious national organization that recognizes academic excellence.

Drawing from a diverse array of interests, Ben enjoys making connections with people to help them solve their problems. He is devoted to solving world-wide problems, with his passion only growing with each new country he visits, especially with his most recent trip to Japan. In the future, Ben plans to work for the United Nations, helping to create solutions to the world's most pressing issues.

[[File:Hinkel 2.jpg|thumb|260x200px]]University Innovation Fellow Ben Hinkel is a junior undersgraduate student at York College of Pennsylvania (YCP). He is currently pursuing a major in International Relations with a minor in Intelligence Analysis. Born and raised in the rural area of Ashland, Pennsylvania, his interest in International Relations was peaked through a student exchange program he participated in with his school's sister school in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Ben is very involved at YCP. He is a member of the Graham Scholars program which focuses on innovation on the YCP campus. Furthermore, he is a memeber of the track team, where he and his teammates hold a record in the 4x800 meter relay. While on campus, Ben is also a Resident Assisstant and a First Year Seminar Fellow, where he aids freshmen with their transition into college. Finally, Ben is a member of Alpha Chi, a prestigious national organization that recognizes academic excellence.

Drawing from a diverse array of interests, Ben enjoys making connections with people to help them solve their problems. He is devoted to solving world-wide problems, with his passion only growing with each new country he visits, especially with his most recent trip to Japan. In the future, Ben plans to work for the United Nations, helping to create solutions to the world's most pressing issues.

Victoria Cox is currently in training to become a University Innovation Fellow at York College of Pennsylvania in York, PA, USA. At YCP, she is pursuing a B.A. in Mass Communication as well as a B.A. in Public Relations, with a Speech Communication Minor. Along with her academic endeavors, Victoria actively engages in several extracurricular activities at York College. She is an Eisenhart Scholar, Student Ambassador, Orientation Leader, and sister of Phi Sigma Sigma. Victoria is also involved with York's theatre department and is the Social Media Chair of WVYC, York College's radio station. 

Originally from a small town in Southern New Jersey, community is a big part of Victoria's life. In high school, Victoria held the pageant title for her town and worked closely with town officials, volunteering at community events and attending town hall meetings. She has been fortunate enough to be able to continue her love of community and service while at York College, volunteering to teach an after school dance program for elementary students, working with a college preparedness outreach program, and coordinating future projects at a local school.

As a part of her scholars program, Victoria was enrolled in a design thinking first year seminar course that completely changed the way she viewed creative thinking and problem solving. The techniques and processes that she learned in that course are things that have stayed with her and greatly impact the way she views every day life. Victoria has a strong belief in the design thinking method and it's ability to get to the route of the problem to create an innovative, useful, and possibly even revolutionary solution. Keeping this into consideration, Victoria wants to have a positive impact on higher education. She has been lucky enough to have access to enlightening and life changing courses, (such as design thinking) as well as Maker Spaces on and off campus, but she knows that students everywhere do not have those luxuries. Victoria believes students should have more opportunities to create, explore, develop, test, and learn - not what is just required of their major studies, but of what interests them as individuals in conjunction with their field of study. As Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun," and students should be able to explore education in a way that will produce never before seen, revolutionary results.

Overview: York College has the possibly to become an institution that fosters design thinking and innovation. To do this will be a lot of work, but it is possible. The faculty here care about their students and want to hear their opinions and ideas. Well here they are! Described on this page is the Three-Phased plan to turn YCP better campus. A better campus is one where we collaborate with each other, learn more about design thinking and innovation, and all have access to resources that will make us better professionals.

 Phase 1: Create Design Thinking Courses

During our experience interviewing freshmen, many of them expressed in design thinking and innovation and entrepreneurship classes. Unfortunately, many of them were unsure of their ability in the field, or didn’t consider themselves creative enough to be a part of entrepreneurship avenues on campus. To remedy this issue we would create design thinking courses on campus. "Design Thinking I" would fulfil a Gen-Ed requirement, potentially Humanitites, Quantitative Fluency, or Arts. It would focus on using design thinking methods to solve a problem on campus. It would be taught similiarly to how "Entreuprenurial Thinking" was taught. "Design Thinking II" would build upon the concepts of "Design Thinking I" to solve a larger problem in the York community. It would be highly encouraged to take "Design Thinking I" before "Design Thinking II". "Design Thinking II" would be the starting point for part II of Phase I, creating custom constellations.

A constellation is a group of 4 classes from a minimum of 3 disciplines. Students could choose these classes that comprise the constellation, allowing for greater flexibility within the discipline. "Design Thinking II" would be required for this custom constellation, and the ideals taught in the class would lend itself to the general theme of the constellation.         

 Phase 2: Graham Innovation Zone

The Graham Innovation Zone (GIZ) is currently under construction and only availible to Graham Scholars, but we see this as a stepping stone in the innovation culture at York College. We intend to use the space to work closely with the Design Thinking classes to further their education. Within the space we can hold specialized classes, workshops, and events to bolster the innovation reputation at York College. This space can also be used as a collaborative zone for other group on campus such as FYS Fellows, RA's, or other students leaders. Working with other student leaders is the final phase of our plan, to create the Center for Collaborative Innovation.

This proposed organization aims to "break down silos within the college's five schools." The goal is to create an organization focused on interdisciplinary collaboration. The Center for Academic Innovation, Center for Community Engagement, Library Technology Services, Leadership Development Center, and the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship would all be brought together to collaborate on ideas to improve the campus. They would have free use of the GIZ. This organizational interdependence can also create a collaborative climate for other groups on campus. We believe the school will have better results the more different campus organizations work together, and this programs aims to create that mentality.

== Promoting Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

York College of PA offers various experiential courses. It starts the first semester with the First Year Seminar (FYS) class. This course serves as a hands on jump start for the students’ college careers such as Entrepreneurial Thinking. The constellation program builds off of this first class. This is York’s general education program and provides specific areas of study such as Sustainability but with a multidisciplinary curriculum. The Kinsley Engineering center serves as a place for product or technology development. The labs are only available to engineers. There is a makerspace being built by the Graham Innovation Scholars to promote innovation and entrepreneurship outside of the engineering center. The Graham Scholars also have created a student business to promote the entrepreneurship effort the program intends to accomplish. The engineering programs at York require three co-op semesters to graduate emphasizing entrepreneurship and business. The art department offers partnerships with the college’s art studio, Marketview Arts. Student art gets put on display and allows art students to explore the spirit of entrepreneurship in their field. Nursing students partner with local hospitals to gain hands on experience during their clinicals.

== Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

The Center for Teaching and Learning at York College awards grants for faculty to provide them with opportunities to receive funding for resources towards developing innovative pedagogies. Grants from this center will allow all applicable faculty to test new teaching strategies, support student learning outcomes, replicate results in multiple disciplines, and enhance faculty understanding across all departments of new teaching methods. These grants are awarded for twice a year. The faculty proposals must include a problem that needs fixing, the method of innovative teaching, the expected impact of the program, and the evaluation of the program. The grants could be used to purchase and teach new technology or sponsor workshops or guest speakers. Previous grants have been awarded to faculty to fund Poverty Simulations to sensitize participants to uncomfortable situations. Our grant program is the most prominent and successful faculty funding program on campus.  

== Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function ==

Tech transfer is not available at York College.

== Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration ==

York College of PA has an engineering co-op program with many business partnerships. These include and are not limited to: Johnson Controls, Voith Hydro, and Harley Davidson.  In addition to engineering, industry contacts exist for nursing majors who do clinicals. For those majors which are not specified, the Alumni Relations Office and many schools have contacts in various industries.

In the engineering department, there are many adjunct professors who work in the industry as optics engineering, consulting engineerings, etc. In nursing, many classes are taught by local nurse practitioners.

== Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts ==

York College of Pennsylvania has multiple programs and departments that relate to the continuous furthering of innovation in the market. First, the Kinsley Engineering Center. This falls in the engineering department and is filled with machinery that allow engineers to explore and tinker, for example, there are multiple oscilloscopes and a tensile tester. The Stabler Department of Nursing has cutting edge simulation labs that mirror hospital facilities as nurses would see them in the work force. Also, the J.D. Brown Wet lab space that is in the city of York owned by the college and is a space for anyone to use as a start-up business space. The Graham Innovation Scholars is an application based program that helps accepted students mentor students to utilize innovation and entrepreneurial skill sets. The campus counseling services are available free to any student that attends York College. Counseling services include; one on one counseling, group counseling, referrals to local resources, all at no  additional cost. There is also a Career Development center that works one on one to polish resumes, host networking events on campus, does mock interviews, real interviews, as well as mini internship fairs and career planning workshops. This is a resource for all students attending York College to utilize at no additional cost.

Hi!

My name is Miranda Gajda and I am a nursing student at York College of Pennsylvania. I am also a member of the Graham Innovation Scholars on campus.Through this program, we learn how to use design thinking and apply it to our everyday life. This is how I got involved on the University Innovation Fellow program to further my knowledge and ability to work with innovation and entrepreneurship. 

On campus, I am also a First Year Experience Fellow. In this role, I act as a student mentor to the freshman on campus, bridging the gap from high school to college. I present mini-lessons to the class educating them on topics such as time management, fun activities on campus, and housing registration. I also am in charge of planning events for freshman to attend to socialize and meet new people while becoming more comfortable with campus. I am also an Anatomy and Physiology laboratory assistant. Here I help students to understand concepts and teach them study methods for the class. 

I am currently employed at Evangelical Community Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. There I am able to interact with patients and care for them while I attend nursing school. This is a great experience to get more interaction with the field I will eventually work in. I am also employed at Ideal Pediatric and Adolescent Care. This is a pediatric office where I have similar duties as a nursing assistant to triage patients and take their vitals. There I am able to work with pediatric patients and their families. In the future, I hope to work in the pediatric field of medicine. 

In my free time, I am a very active person. I am an avid runner and swimmer competing in community races I also enjoy CrossFit and competing in Crossfit competitions. In the summer I love to participate in the Tough Mudder races for the wounded warrior project.

Robert Nicholas Vandemark (preferred name Nick) is currently training to become a University Innovation Fellow. Nick attends York College of Pennsylvania (YCP), where he is pursuing a B.S. in Computer Engineering, a B.S. in Computer Science, a minor in Mathematics, and a minor in Physics. Along with his dedication to his education, Nick’s active in one of his campus’ honors program the ''Graham Innovation Scholars'', and he’s also involved in a number of extracurricular activities. These include, but are not limited to:

*Co-organizer of YCPHacks, YCP’s hackathon
*Co-developer of YCP’s first makerspace, the Graham Innovation Zone
*Developing robotics for a local York startup company
*Member of Tech Tinkerers, an initiative that gives young kids the tools and resources they need to learn and get excited about computers and programming

 Nick has lived in Pennsylvania all his life – born in Paoli, lived in Exton until the age of three, and has since moved around in West Chester. Nick was lucky enough to attend B. Reed Henderson High School, recently announced to be the number four public high school in the nation. The environment there promotes creative/hands on learning with a welcoming atmosphere, and gave him the resources he needed to succeed. Because of his experience there and the AP tests that were offered to him, he went into his freshman year at YCP with 45 credits, allowing him to graduate on time with a double major and double minor. Overall, Nick has had a fantastic experience with higher education, something that’s been important to him for a long time.

 

As part of the Graham Innovation Scholar program, Nick was offered a seat in a design thinking class, one that stressed the importance of hands on learning, innovative mindsets, etc. He left this course with a completely different view of efficient business practice and principles. Throughout his college experience, Nick has been offered plenty of great opportunities like these to advance his academic career and shape his future, and he wants to do everything he can to improve his classmates higher educational experience.

Benjamin O’Connor is a Junior at York College of Pennsylvania pursuing a degree in data analytics. Ben grew up in a small town of Pennsylvania. While growing up, Ben worked on a diverse number of projects ranging from woodworking to rebuilding a 67’ Camaro. While not working on projects, Ben loves to train in Mixed Martial Arts and is currently pursuing an A level skydiving certification.

While studying at York College, Ben self-designed the data analytics major. The major combines 3 already existing majors, Mathematics, Intelligence Analysis and Economics. Ben is also involved in the Graham Innovation Scholars program. This program is on the forefront of entrepreneurship mindsets and innovation. While Participating in the Graham Scholars program, Ben helped launch a student run business and traveled to Japan for an in depth cultural learning experience.

Ben's acadamic interests include big data analysis, cyber security and predictive analytics.

It is comprised of an emphasis major, innovation core, and a cross-discipline core which provides students with the skills to innovate in a meaningful way while earning their degree.

Within the Bachelor of Innovation™, Abigail has had the opportunity to contribute to the community through working on projects as part of her classes.  Her most memorable team experience involved helping to design the waiting room for an expansion to the oncology department at a local hospital.  As a part of that team, Abigail spearheaded the organization of a photoshoot for that oncology department to demonstrate the support of the community.

At UCCS, Abigail also works in the Vision and Security Technology (VAST) Lab as a research assistant working with machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision.  This is where she found her passion for the field and is now planning to go to grad school!  In order to provide an outlet for her passion for her school, Abigail also works as a Student Ambassador giving tours of campus.

=== Strategy 1: Centralize Resources ===

As many of the problems we found when we were looking at on our landscape canvas dealt with resources, one of our solutions was creating a centralized place where people could find the resources they need, and to provide the knowledge that these resources existed.  Our first idea was to create a google sheet which would have different categories of resources with updated contact information, but we knew we would have a problem with keeping the contact information up to date.  When we spoke with our faculty champion, he suggested that we use the existing student government wiki to create this, so that the contact information could be edited by whoever had the information, and the edits would just have to be moderated, making less work for the people maintaining the page.  In addition to this, he suggested that we create a club listing, and in order for clubs to be on the current listing, the club leader (or whoever is in charge of their online presence), would have to update their listing each semester.  This would help create an accurate picture of active clubs on campus.

=== Strategy 2: Mobile Maker Cart ===

Since large, unused classroom space is a rare commodity, we had to find a more flexible solution to provide students access to infrastructure. We came up with the idea of a mobile UCCS Maker Cart, which would be a mobile workstation for students. This cart would have consumable materials, such as construction paper, pipe cleaners, glue sticks and much more. Tools such as scissors, glue sticks, binder clips, etc. would also be included. The cart itself would have a large table top to work on, a whiteboard to get ideas down, an attached trash can for easy cleanup, many shelves for supplies, and plenty of “ad” space to advertise local campus resources and community resources, such as venture capital.

=== Strategy 3: Instant Innovation Challenges ===

To engage students on campus by actively involving them in team situations which require them to use innovation and creativity we prototyped an instant challenge game. This game involved basic materials checked out from the library including, tape, rulers, pencils, cases, string, and a large heavy book. The goal of the challenge is to get the book as high off of the table using only the included materials. We conducted the game on a table outside of our library and got a group of students, who had never met, to participate in the challenge. We gave them 2 minutes to discuss a plan, without touching the materials, then we gave them 5 minutes to actually implement their design. If successful at holding the book in the air, then another random person walking by is selected to judge the teams design.

We didn’t have a lot of materials and we were happy to see how engaged the students got when they started working together to figure out the problem.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship are a core focus at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS).  This is demonstrated through the unique [http://innovation.uccs.edu Bachelor of InnovationTM] (BI) degree. There are currently 12 BI degrees, spanning across the College of Business, College of Engineering and Applied Science, College of Education, and the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. This degree combines an emphasis (a major), the innovation core, and a cross-discipline core (students can choose between business, globalization, creative communication, or engineering technology). The innovation core, the heart of the BI, provides students with an experiential education in innovation and entrepreneurship.

In addition to the BI degree, our campus, through the [http://epiic.uccs.edu El Pomar Institute for Innovation and Commercialization (EPIIC)], regularly hosts events focused on innovation and entrepreneurship such as [http://tedxuccs.com TEDxUCCS], '''Lion's Den Pitch Night''', '''Global Game Jam''', and '''EPIIC Nights Speaker Series'''.  Each of these events are meant to encourage students to get involved in an innovative and entrepreneurial space, attempting to reach both students who have ideas and students who want to get involved. These are augmented by entrepreneurship classes offered in the business school for students who want to go deeper.  If a startup comes out of one of these events, or if students create a startup independently, '''The Garage''' is available as an entrepreneurial workspace for students who are developing companies.

== Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

Faculty at UCCS are responsible for the innovative BI degree, but also for creating an atmosphere and curriculum that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.  The curriculum developed for the Innovation Core is designed to facilitate both the mindset shift that is required for students to utilize their innate innovative abilities and the experiential learning that allows students to explore this ability with the purpose of transforming ideas into impact through the projects they work on for class.

Outside of the BI, there are few classes that are focued on innovation or entrepreneurship that are widely available.  The majority of entrepreneurship classes are focused in the College of Business.

In addition to these classes, UCCS is home to both El Pomar Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship, Dr. Tom Duenning, and El Pomar Endowed Chair in Innovation, Dr. Terrance Boult, who help facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.

Within the Bachelor of Innovation™ we have two courses that teach our students about intellectual property and support our university technology transfer function. The first is Business and Intellectual Property Law. In this class, students dive into what intellectual property means and how they can protect their ideas. Students learn how to develop a patent and work together to understand how these skills fit into their futures. The second class, Technical Writing, teaches students how to research, find, and write grants, culminating in writing a real grant proposal for a real client. Both of these classes provide students with hands on experience and skills that they will be able to apply in their future careers. After taking these two classes students have a realistic grasp on what intellectual property is and how they can protect, and leverage it in their future.

In addition to the BI courses, the University of Colorado, as a system, has a Tech Transfer office which has the ability to license patents out to students to facilitate the development of a product or company around intellectual property that the University owns. This gives students the valuable opportunity to create innovations and protecting their intellectual property out of the box.

These resources can provide great value to students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship at UCCS; it is therefore critical that UCCS creates relationships and partnerships with these organizations to provide students with both opportunities and the resources to pursue innovation and entrepreneurship.  Many of these relationships exist, but they could be better and more widely utilized.

== Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts ==

At this point, the most significant point of outreach in the community at UCCS are the Innovation Teams classes in the Bachelor of Innovation.  Teams of students work for clients in the community as innovation consultants for a semester, solving a problem for their client.  Clients have provided a variety of projects from mobile application development to market research and business plan development.

Although outreach at UCCS is currently providing significant value in the community, engagement with regional and local economic development efforts should be developed.  Creating and maintaining relationships with the Colorado Springs community is critical, as the community is growing quickly, and new innovative and entrepreneurial opportunities are created through the development of empathy and intersections of ideas.

Victoria Cox is currently in training to become a University Innovation Fellow at York College of Pennsylvania in York, PA, USA. At YCP, she is pursuing a B.A. in Mass Communication as well as a B.A. in Public Relations, with a Speech Communication Minor. Along with her academic endeavors, Victoria actively engages in several extracurricular activities at York College. She is an Eisenhart Scholar, Student Ambassador, Orientation Leader, and sister of Phi Sigma Sigma. Victoria is also involved with York's theatre department and is the Social Media Chair of WVYC, York College's radio station. 

Originally from a small town in Southern New Jersey, community is a big part of Victoria's life. In high school, Victoria held the pageant title for her town and worked closely with town officials, volunteering at community events and attending town hall meetings. She has been fortunate enough to be able to continue her love of community and service while at York College, volunteering to teach an after school dance program for elementary students, working with a college preparedness outreach program, and coordinating future projects at a local school.

As a part of her scholars program, Victoria was enrolled in a design thinking first year seminar course that completely changed the way she viewed creative thinking and problem solving. The techniques and processes that she learned in that course are things that have stayed with her and greatly impact the way she views every day life. Victoria has a strong belief in the design thinking method and it's ability to get to the route of the problem to create an innovative, useful, and possibly even revolutionary solution. Keeping this into consideration, Victoria wants to have a positive impact on higher education. She has been lucky enough to have access to enlightening and life changing courses, (such as design thinking) as well as Maker Spaces on and off campus, but she knows that students everywhere do not have those luxuries. Victoria believes students should have more opportunities to create, explore, develop, test, and learn - not what is just required of their major studies, but of what interests them as individuals in conjunction with their field of study. As Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun," and students should be able to explore education in a way that will produce never before seen, revolutionary results.

To William, mathematics has described the world with indifferent elegance. He, as a human, cannot hold the weight of indifference. Where mathematics fails in description is where he creates written or visual expression. With the passion of an artist and the thoughts of a writer, he pursues a career in space exploration. The thought to help humanity achieve status as a space fairing civilization hangs on his head.

William is attending York College of Pennsylvania where he is studying mechanical engineering. He has worked in the community and campus on a variety of projects as a member of the Graham Innovation Scholars program at York College. He was accepted into this elite program that focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship as an incoming freshman. Together the group of scholars have founded and run a student business in the beating heart of York City. At its inception William served as the marketing director managing social media accounts and graphic design. Most recently he completed an independent research project on reusable space launch vehicles where he set out to gain a deeper understanding of the emerging field.

For nearly 8 years William has been an amateur graphic designer and for his whole life he has been an artist. The desire felt 40,000 years ago from cave dwellers to draw on rock walls remains as an everlasting itch in William's fingers. It only makes sense he is helping to design a makerspace with walls covered in white boards. A picture is worth a thousand words and when he becomes inspired by his imagination and sees wonder, he attempts to write those thousands of words as poems, stories, and random strings of thought.

Hi!

My name is Miranda Gajda and I am a nursing student at York College of Pennsylvania. I am also a member of the Graham Innovation Scholars on campus.Through this program, we learn how to use design thinking and apply it to our everyday life. This is how I got involved on the University Innovation Fellow program to further my knowledge and ability to work with innovation and entrepreneurship. 

On campus, I am also a First Year Experience Fellow. In this role, I act as a student mentor to the freshman on campus, bridging the gap from high school to college. I present mini-lessons to the class educating them on topics such as time management, fun activities on campus, and housing registration. I also am in charge of planning events for freshman to attend to socialize and meet new people while becoming more comfortable with campus. I am also an Anatomy and Physiology laboratory assistant. Here I help students to understand concepts and teach them study methods for the class. 

I am currently employed at Evangelical Community Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. There I am able to interact with patients and care for them while I attend nursing school. This is a great experience to get more interaction with the field I will eventually work in. I am also employed at Ideal Pediatric and Adolescent Care. This is a pediatric office where I have similar duties as a nursing assistant to triage patients and take their vitals. There I am able to work with pediatric patients and their families. In the future, I hope to work in the pediatric field of medicine. 

In my free time, I am a very active person. I am an avid runner and swimmer competing in community races I also enjoy CrossFit and competing in Crossfit competitions. In the summer I love to participate in the Tough Mudder races for the wounded warrior project.

Hello all! I’m John. In addition to having major X and minor Y, I am very involved at school. I am a Graham Innovation Scholar, Student Senator, and [[File:4.18 headshot small.JPG|thumb|200x300px|4.18 headshot small.JPG]]Orientation Leader. I’ve played sax in the jazz band, and currently play string bass in the college's community orchestra.  

Growing up in Reading, PA, I was lucky to have passionate teachers who instilled a love of science and math in me at a young age. I’m forever thankful for Mrs. Lorah who taught me algebra, and forced me to join a science competition in 6th grade! This sparked my love for math and science, which continued through high school. Like any true nerd, physics and calculus were classes that I loved.

Going through school, I learned to love music and languages in addition to STEM subjects. I wanted to study some type of engineering, but I also wanted to go to a college where other interests could be pursued... and York was the perfect fit. Talk to me passionately about something, or show me a TED Talk, and I’m hooked! My interests in lots of things lead me to apply to the Graham Scholars Program at YCP. This is a program for highly motivated students interested in business skills and innovation. In this program, cross collaboration between majors is required, and learning in our cohort classes is project based. The Graham Scholars Program allowed me to take a First Year Seminar about Design Thinking, network with business leaders on day one, participate in a student run business, and APPLY TO UIF! Learning design thinking last year changed how I thought about problem solving and creative confidence. With successful completion of UIF Training, I hope to have the skills to introduce innovation to the entire campus, and bring a creative mindset to every encounter in my life.

In my spare time, I practice German, talk about travel, take pictures, eat chocolate, and practice mindfulness! Language learning has opened so many doors in my life. Currently, I’m starting to apply for co-ops, and hopefully next summer I’ll be working in Germany. Travel to Europe in previous summers has created never-ending Wanderlust in me, and an interest to learn another language. So now I’m taking a Spanish 101, and boy is learning a language from scratch a humbling experience.

Robert Nicholas Vandemark (preferred name Nick) is currently training to become a University Innovation Fellow. Nick attends York College of Pennsylvania (YCP), where he is pursuing a B.S. in Computer Engineering, a B.S. in Computer Science, a minor in Mathematics, and a minor in Physics. Along with his dedication to his education, Nick’s active in one of his campus’ honors program the ''Graham Innovation Scholars'', and he’s also involved in a number of extracurricular activities. These include, but are not limited to:

*Co-organizer of YCPHacks, YCP’s hackathon
*Co-developer of YCP’s first makerspace, the Graham Innovation Zone
*Developing robotics for a local York startup company
*Member of Tech Tinkerers, an initiative that gives young kids the tools and resources they need to learn and get excited about computers and programming

 Nick has lived in Pennsylvania all his life – born in Paoli, lived in Exton until the age of three, and has since moved around in West Chester. Nick was lucky enough to attend B. Reed Henderson High School, recently announced to be the number four public high school in the nation. The environment there promotes creative/hands on learning with a welcoming atmosphere, and gave him the resources he needed to succeed. Because of his experience there and the AP tests that were offered to him, he went into his freshman year at YCP with 45 credits, allowing him to graduate on time with a double major and double minor. Overall, Nick has had a fantastic experience with higher education, something that’s been important to him for a long time.

 

As part of the Graham Innovation Scholar program, Nick was offered a seat in a design thinking class, one that stressed the importance of hands on learning, innovative mindsets, etc. He left this course with a completely different view of efficient business practice and principles. Throughout his college experience, Nick has been offered plenty of great opportunities like these to advance his academic career and shape his future, and he wants to do everything he can to improve his classmates higher educational experience.

Benjamin O’Connor is a Junior at York College of Pennsylvania pursuing a degree in data analytics. Ben grew up in a small town of Pennsylvania. While growing up, Ben worked on a diverse number of projects ranging from woodworking to rebuilding a 67’ Camaro. While not working on projects, Ben loves to train in Mixed Martial Arts and is currently pursuing an A level skydiving certification.

While studying at York College, Ben self-designed the data analytics major. The major combines 3 already existing majors, Mathematics, Intelligence Analysis and Economics. Ben is also involved in the Graham Innovation Scholars program. This program is on the forefront of entrepreneurship mindsets and innovation. While Participating in the Graham Scholars program, Ben helped launch a student run business and traveled to Japan for an in depth cultural learning experience.

Ben's acadamic interests include big data analysis, cyber security and predictive analytics.

University Innovation Fellow Ben Hinkel is a junior undergraduate student at York College of Pennsylvania (YCP). He is currently pursuing a major in International Relations with a minor in Intelligence Analysis. Born in the rural area of Ashland, Pennsylvania, his interest in International Relations was peaked through a student exchange program he participated in with his school's sister school in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Ben is very involved at YCP. He is a member of the Graham Scholars Program which focuses on innovation on York's campus. Furthermore, he is a member of the track team, where he and his teammates hold a school record in the 4x800. While on campus, Ben is also a Resident Assistant and First Year Seminar Fellow, where he aids freshmen with their transition to college. Finally, Ben is also a member of Alpha Chi, a national organization that recognizes academic excellence, as well as editor-in-chief of a student based journal providing commentary on national and international events. 

Drawing from a diverse array of interests, Ben enjoys making connections with people to help them solve their problems. He is devoted to solving world-wide problems, with his passion only growing with each new country he visits, especially with his most recent trip to Japan. In the future, Ben plans to work for the United Nations, helping to create solutions to the world's most pressing issues.

== Promoting Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

Innovation and Entrepreneurship are a core focus at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS).  This is demonstrated through the unique [http://innovation.uccs.edu Bachelor of InnovationTM] (BI) degree. There are currently 12 BI degrees, spanning across the College of Business, College of Engineering and Applied Science, College of Education, and the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. This degree combines an emphasis (a major), the innovation core, and a cross-discipline core (students can choose between business, globalization, creative communication, or engineering technology). The innovation core, the heart of the BI, provides students with an experiential education in innovation and entrepreneurship.

In addition to the BI degree, our campus, through the [http://epiic.uccs.edu El Pomar Institute for Innovation and Commercialization (EPIIC)], regularly hosts events focused on innovation and entrepreneurship such as [http://tedxuccs.com TEDxUCCS], '''Lion's Den Pitch Night''', '''Global Game Jam''', and '''EPIIC Nights Speaker Series'''.  Each of these events are meant to encourage students to get involved in an innovative and entrepreneurial space, attempting to reach both students who have ideas and students who want to get involved. These are augmented by entrepreneurship classes offered in the business school for students who want to go deeper.  If a startup comes out of one of these events, or if students create a startup independently, '''The Garage''' is available as an entrepreneurial workspace for students who are developing companies.

== Encouraging Faculty Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

Faculty at UCCS are responsible for the innovative BI degree, but also for creating an atmosphere and curriculum that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.  The curriculum developed for the Innovation Core is designed to facilitate both the mindset shift that is required for students to utilize their innate innovative abilities and the experiential learning that allows students to explore this ability with the purpose of transforming ideas into impact through the projects they work on for class.

Outside of the BI, there are few classes that are focued on innovation or entrepreneurship that are widely available.  The majority of entrepreneurship classes are focused in the College of Business.

In addition to these classes, UCCS is home to both El Pomar Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship, Dr. Tom Duenning, and El Pomar Endowed Chair in Innovation, Dr. Terrance Boult, who help facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.

== Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function ==

Within the Bachelor of Innovation™ we have two courses that teach our students about intellectual property and support our university technology transfer function. The first is Business and Intellectual Property Law. In this class, students dive into what intellectual property means and how they can protect their ideas. Students learn how to develop a patent and work together to understand how these skills fit into their futures. The second class, Technical Writing, teaches students how to research, find, and write grants, culminating in writing a real grant proposal for a real client. Both of these classes provide students with hands on experience and skills that they will be able to apply in their future careers. After taking these two classes students have a realistic grasp on what intellectual property is and how they can protect, and leverage it in their future.

In addition to the BI courses, the University of Colorado, as a system, has a Tech Transfer office which has the ability to license patents out to students to facilitate the development of a product or company around intellectual property that the University owns. This gives students the valuable opportunity to create innovations and protecting their intellectual property out of the box.

== Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration ==

Colorado Springs itself contains several opportunities to connect our university to the entrepreneurial industry: 

*[http://pikespeakmakerspace.org/ Pikes Peak Makerspace], a makerspace in downtown Colorado Springs, partners with UCCS to provide a certain number of free memberships to students every semester.

*[https://peakstartup.org/ Peak Startup] is a non-profit organization in Colorado Springs that supports entrepreneurial efforts by working with founders, hosting pitch nights and startup weekends, and facilittating education, networking and mentoring.
*[https://www.quadcos.org/ QUAD Innovation Partnership] is an organization collaborating with the four major colleges in Colorado Springs (UCCS, Colorado College, United States Air Force Academy, and Pikes Peak Community College) to help students transfer into the working world by offering internship opportunities to work on projects important to Colorado Springs.
*[https://www.catalystcampus.com/ Catalyst Campus] is a collaborative system for economic growth in Colorado Springs, they offer a coworking space, collaborative environment for inovation and entrepreneurship. 

These resources can provide great value to students interested in innovation and entrepreneurship at UCCS; it is therefore critical that UCCS creates relationships and partnerships with these organizations to provide students with both opportunities and the resources to pursue innovation and entrepreneurship.  Many of these relationships exist, but they could be better and more widely utilized.

== Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts ==

At this point, the most significant point of outreach in the community at UCCS are the Innovation Teams classes in the Bachelor of Innovation.  Teams of students work for clients in the community as innovation consultants for a semester, solving a problem for their client.  Clients have provided a variety of projects from mobile application development to market research and business plan development.

== Promoting Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship ==

York College of PA offers various experiential courses. It starts the first semester with the First Year Seminar (FYS) class. This course serves as a hands on jump start for the students’ college careers such as Entrepreneurial Thinking. The constellation program builds off of this first class. This is York’s general education program and provides specific areas of study such as Sustainability but with a multidisciplinary curriculum. The Kinsley Engineering center serves as a place for product or technology development. The labs are only available to engineers. There is a makerspace being built by the Graham Innovation Scholars to promote innovation and entrepreneurship outside of the engineering center. The Graham Scholars also have created a student business to promote the entrepreneurship effort the program intends to accomplish. The engineering programs at York require three co-op semesters to graduate emphasizing entrepreneurship and business. The art department offers partnerships with the college’s art studio, Marketview Arts. Student art gets put on display and allows art students to explore the spirit of entrepreneurship in their field. Nursing students partner with local hospitals to gain hands on experience during their clinicals. Encouraging faculty innovation and entrepreneurship:

The Center for Teaching and Learning at York College awards grants for faculty to provide them with opportunities to receive funding for resources towards developing innovative pedagogies. Grants from this center will allow all applicable faculty to test new teaching strategies, support student learning outcomes, replicate results in multiple disciplines, and enhance faculty understanding across all departments of new teaching methods. These grants are awarded for twice a year. The faculty proposals must include a problem that needs fixing, the method of innovative teaching, the expected impact of the program, and the evaluation of the program. The grants could be used to purchase and teach new technology or sponsor workshops or guest speakers. Previous grants have been awarded to faculty to fund Poverty Simulations to sensitize participants to uncomfortable situations. Our grant program is the most prominent and successful faculty funding program on campus.

== Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration ==

York College of PA has an engineering co-op program with many business partnerships. These include and are not limited to: Johnson Controls, Voith Hydro, and Harley Davidson.  In addition to engineering, industry contacts exist for nursing majors who do clinicals. For those majors which are not specified, the Alumni Relations Office and many schools have contacts in various industries.

In the engineering department, there are many adjunct professors who work in the industry as optics engineering, consulting engineerings, etc. In nursing, many classes are taught by local nurse practitioners.

== Engaging with Regional and Local Economic Development Efforts ==

York College of Pennsylvania has multiple programs and departments that relate to the continuous furthering of innovation in the market. First, the Kinsley Engineering Center. This falls in the engineering department and is filled with machinery that allow engineers to explore and tinker, for example, there are multiple oscilloscopes and a tensile tester. The Stabler Department of Nursing has cutting edge simulation labs that mirror hospital facilities as nurses would see them in the work force. Also, the J.D. Brown Wet lab space that is in the city of York owned by the college and is a space for anyone to use as a start-up business space. The Graham Innovation Scholars is an application based program that helps accepted students mentor students to utilize innovation and entrepreneurial skill sets. The campus counseling services are available free to any student that attends York College. Counseling services include; one on one counseling, group counseling, referrals to local resources, all at no  additional cost. There is also a Career Development center that works one on one to polish resumes, host networking events on campus, does mock interviews, real interviews, as well as mini internship fairs and career planning workshops. This is a resource for all students attending York College to utilize at no additional cost.

Abigail Graese is a senior at University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) studying Computer Science with a cross-discipline in Business within the Bachelor o[http://universityinnovation.org/images/6/6e/AbigailGraese.jpg http://universityinnovation.org/images/6/6e/AbigailGraese.jpg]f Innovation™.  The Bachelor of Innovation™ is a unique family of interdisciplinaryundergraduate degrees at UCCS. It is comprised of an emphasis major, innovation core, and a cross-discipline core which provides students with the skills to innovate in a meaningful way while earning their degree.

Within the Bachelor of Innovation™, Abigail has had the opportunity to contribute to the community through working on projects as part of her classes.  Her most memorable team experience involved helping to design the waiting room for an expansion to the oncology department at a local hospital.  As a part of that team, Abigail spearheaded the organization of a photoshoot for that oncology department to demonstrate the support of the community.

At UCCS, Abigail also works in the Vision and Security Technology (VAST) Lab as a research assistant working with machine learning, deep learning, and computer vision.  This is where she found her passion for the field and is now planning to go to grad school!  In order to provide an outlet for her passion for her school, Abigail also works as a Student Ambassador giving tours of campus.

In addition to the BI degree, our campus, through the [http://epiic.uccs.edu El Pomar Institute for Innovation and Commercialization (EPIIC)], regularly hosts events focused on innovation and entrepreneurship such as [http://tedxuccs.com TEDxUCCS], '''Lion's Den Pitch Night''', '''Global Game Jam''', and '''EPIIC Nights Speaker Series'''.  Each of these events are meant to encourage students to get involved in an innovative and entrepreneurial space, attempting to reach both students who have ideas and students who just want to get involved.  If a startup comes out of one of these events, or if students create a startup independently, '''The Garage''' is available as an entrepreneurial workspace for students who are developing companies.

Outside of the BI, there are few classes that are focued on innovation or entrepreneurship that are widely available.  The majority of entrepreneurship classes are focused in the College of Business.

In addition to these classes, UCCS is home to both El Pomar Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship, Dr. Tom Duenning, and El Pomar Endowed Chair in Innovation, Dr. Terrance Boult, who help facilitate innovation and entrepreneurship on campus.

== Actively Supporting the University Technology Transfer Function ==

Within the Bachelor of Innovation™ we have two courses that teach our students about intellectual property and support our university technology transfer function. The first is Business and Intellectual Property Law. In this class, students dive into what intellectual property means and how they can protect their ideas. Students learn how to develop a patent and work together to understand how these skills fit into their futures. The second class, Technical Writing, teaches students how to research, find, and write grants, culminating in writing a real grant proposal for a real client. Both of these classes provide students with hands on experience and skills that they will be able to apply in their future careers. After taking these two classes students have a realistic grasp on what intellectual property is and how they can protect, and leverage it in their future.

In addition to the BI courses, the University of Colorado, as a system, has a Tech Transfer office which has the ability to license patents out to students to facilitate the development of a product or company around intellectual property that the University owns. This gives students the valuable opportunity to create innovations and protecting their intellectual property out of the box.

== Facilitating University-Industry Collaboration ==

Colorado Springs itself contains several opportunities to connect our university to the entrepreneurial industry:

*[https://peakstartup.org/ Peak Startup] is a non-profit organization in Colorado Springs that supports entrepreneurial efforts by working with founders, hosting pitch nights and startup weekends, and facilittating education, networking and mentoring.
*[https://www.quadcos.org/ QUAD Innovation Partnership] is an organization collaborating with the four major colleges in Colorado Springs (UCCS, Colorado College, United States Air Force Academy, and Pikes Peak Community College) to help students transfer into the working world by offering internship opportunities to work on projects important to Colorado Springs.

Overview: York College has the possibly to become an institution that fosters design thinking and innovation. To do this will be a lot of work, but it is possible. The faculty here care about their students and want to hear their opinions and ideas. Well here they are! Described on this page is the Three-Phased plan to turn YCP better campus. A better campus is one where we collaborate with each other, learn more about design thinking and innovation, and all have access to resources that will make us better professionals.

 Phase 1: Create Design Thinking Courses

During our experience interviewing freshmen, many of them expressed in design thinking and innovation and entrepreneurship classes. Unfortunately, many of them were unsure of their ability in the field, or didn’t consider themselves creative enough to be a part of entrepreneurship avenues on campus. To remedy this issue we would create design thinking courses on campus. "Design Thinking I" would fulfil a Gen-Ed requirement, potentially Humanitites, Quantitative Fluency, or Arts. It would focus on using design thinking methods to solve a problem on campus. It would be taught similiarly to how "Entreuprenurial Thinking" was taught. "Design Thinking II" would build upon the concepts of "Design Thinking I" to solve a larger problem in the York community. It would be highly encouraged to take "Design Thinking I" before "Design Thinking II". "Design Thinking II" would be the starting point for part II of Phase I, creating custom constellations.

A constellation is a group of 4 classes from a minimum of 3 disciplines. Students could choose these classes that comprise the constellation, allowing for greater flexibility within the discipline. "Design Thinking II" would be required for this custom constellation, and the ideals taught in the class would lend itself to the general theme of the constellation.         

 Phase 2: Graham Innovation Zone

The Graham Innovation Zone (GIZ) is currently under construction and only availible to Graham Scholars, but we see this as a stepping stone in the innovation culture at York College. We intend to use the space to work closely with the Design Thinking classes to further their education. Within the space we can hold specialized classes, workshops, and events to bolster the innovation reputation at York College. This space can also be used as a collaborative zone for other group on campus such as FYS Fellows, RA's, or other students leaders. Working with other student leaders is the final phase of our plan, to create the Center for Collaborative Innovation.

This proposed organization aims to "break down silos within the college's five schools." The goal is to create an organization focused on interdisciplinary collaboration. The Center for Academic Innovation, Center for Community Engagement, Library Technology Services, Leadership Development Center, and the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship would all be brought together to collaborate on ideas to improve the campus. They would have free use of the GIZ. This organizational interdependence can also create a collaborative climate for other groups on campus. We believe the school will have better results the more different campus organizations work together, and this programs aims to create that mentality.

Hi!

My name is Miranda Gajda and I am a nursing student at York College of Pennsylvania. I am also a member of the Graham Innovation Scholars on campus.Through this program, we learn how to use design thinking and apply it to our everyday life. This is how I got involved on the University Innovation Fellow program to further my knowledge and ability to work with innovation and entrepreneurship. 

On campus, I am also a First Year Experience Fellow. In this role, I act as a student mentor to the freshman on campus, bridging the gap from high school to college. I present mini-lessons to the class educating them on topics such as time management, fun activities on campus, and housing registration. I also am in charge of planning events for freshman to attend to socialize and meet new people while becoming more comfortable with campus. I am also an Anatomy and Physiology laboratory assistant. Here I help students to understand concepts and teach them study methods for the class. 

I am currently employed at Evangelical Community Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. There I am able to interact with patients and care for them while I attend nursing school. This is a great experience to get more interaction with the field I will eventually work in. I am also employed at Ideal Pediatric and Adolescent Care. This is a pediatric office where I have similar duties as a nursing assistant to triage patients and take their vitals. There I am able to work with pediatric patients and their families. In the future, I hope to work in the pediatric field of medicine. 

In my free time, I am a very active person. I am an avid runner and swimmer competing in community races I also enjoy CrossFit and competing in Crossfit competitions. In the summer I love to participate in the Tough Mudder races for the wounded warrior project.
