The Ohio State University offers premier services to pockets of students through organizations such as the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Technology Commercialization Office, and various student organization. However, these are not widely utilized within engineering and business, let alone the rest of the university. The typical student receives little to no of the entrepreneurial and innovation education that prepares them for the modern economy. To extend the long-term I&E Ecosystem at Ohio State; to provide students with resources and environments that facilitate innovation learning; to advise, incubate, and accelerate student generated ideas, the following Student Priorities have been created.

= UNIVERSITY INNOVATION FELLOWS 2019 - 2020  =

= PRIORITY 1: DEVELOPMENT OF UNIVERSITY BOARD FOR INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP =

After 3 years of the UIF program at The Ohio State University, we have noticed that our university is lacking an owner for the I&E landscape. As the university becomes more siloed with the growth of its individual colleges, I&E projects continue to be held in the dark due to the lack of communication. The University Innovation Fellows have decided that it will be our continuous priority to own the state of the I&E landscape by creating board

<li>Description: During the month of November, our leadership circle shall facilitate a stakeholder meeting with key faculty and administrative personal. The goal of this meeting is to introduce our various ideas as well as establish a fundamental relationship between the student body and faculty moving forward.</li>

=== Milestone 2: Invite Faculty to be on the I&E Board - December, 2019 ===

<li>Description: After the stakeholder meeting, we want to form a board of faculty advisors from across the various areas of campus to provide a consistent pulse on the I&E developments in their particular department. Getting together the UIF faculty board will not only assist in with the longevity of the UIF program but will help us have the connections across the university required to push new initiatives. </li>

<li>Description:After multiple semesters in operation, the UIF I&E board would hope to add members of industry onto the board. Industry members will help guide the board in with perspective from outside the university and would ideally help to source resources outside of the reach of students and faculty. </li>

= PRIORITY 2: RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STUDENT INNOVATION & ENTREPRENEURSHIP COUNCIL  =

The council was focused on bringing student leaders in the I&E space together from around campus to discuss what they are doing and encourage open collaboration between organizations. The general idea was that together, we could increase access to entrepreneurship and innovation at Ohio State.

<li>Description: After invitations have been sent, the goal would be to have our first large council meeting at the beginning of Spring semester. This would be a chance for everyone to be updated on what they have been doing and where they plan to head in the short term</li>

<li>Description:Our goal is to have smaller working groups within SIEC that work to help further a specific initiative in the I&E landscape. = PRIORITY 3: UIF PROGRAM LONGEVITY  =

The University Innovation Fellows is a program that has impacted the lives of not only the fellows, but many other on campus. However, at a university of Ohio State’s size, it is very difficult to have a sustained impact as cohorts change and projects last outside of the scope of an academic year. As the UIF program, we will be working towards developing a sustainable model for UIF in order to ensure that the program has strategic and constant presence within the University.

The Ohio State University is composed of diverse expertise and strong research, but this is often siloed into respective disciplines. Effective impact means that everyone has access to resources and the ability to share perspectives in order to create change on a systematic basis.

= Priority 1: Development of Ohio State Innovation Lab =

The first area of focus for the second fellowship is the development of a physical lab on campus. The Ohio State Univeristy has a strong foundational system for innovation, however, the school now requires a physical to allow students to access Innovation materials. Our method of developing this space will involve vigorous work with faculty to create such a space.

The Freshman Engineering Curriculum Reform aims to revamp the second semester design course (ENGR 1182) that all engineering freshmen and those pursuing an engineering minor are required to take. Traditionally, this course is very linear, the curriculum does not promote creativity as much as it should, and does not encourage students to make connections between what they design and how it could create social or economic value. This project is part of a KEEN grant project to promote Entrepreneurial Minded Learning across engineering education at OSU.

The Experiential Learning Initiative aims to promote and facilitate more experiential learning opportunities on campus, specifically in the business school and eventually the engineering school. It is also a stepping stone for incorporating more entrepreneurial development on campus that involves students and student-led projects. The peak of learning happens at action and implementation, so it seems counter-intuitive for business students to be learning solely from lecture. This initiative will push the bounds of the current curriculum for multiple classes and encourage more project-based work and real-world learning outcomes.

It is also aimed at encouraging students to start businesses and then house those businesses on-campus, therefore encouraging more students to become involved in start-up initiatives during the school year and beyond. In the long-term, I would love to push for actual community spaces on campus for entrepreneurs to work and recruit directly from Ohio State.

Ohio State has a few programs that teach innovative and entrepreneurial methods including the Entrepreneurship and Innovation minor and the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) Honors program. However, these are both multi-year commitments that many students are unwilling to make. In addition to these, we would like to create programming that provides a one semester introduction to concepts such as Lean Startup, Design thinking, and other problem-centric methodologies.

Ohio State is very large university where space for studetns and organizations to collaborate is rather limited. One of the large initiatives we are pushing for are a network of open collaboration spaces, Innovation Labs, across campus. These spaces will be open to student organizations, project groups, and single students and geared towards ideation. These spaces will also be used to run workshops for I&E topics.

Andrew Benisek is a University Innovation Fellow at The Ohio State University studying Computer Science Engineering in the Integrated Business and Engineering Honor Program. On campus, Andrew focuses on working across colleges to not only help others to gain breadth in their knowledge and skillset. He is an undergraduate teaching assistant in the Department of Engineering Education, helps run a non-profit focused of financial equality and economic growth, and works with his peers to help strengthen the IBE program on strategic projects. As a fulltime career, Andrew would like to go into Product Management where he can work every day to help improve the lives of product users around the world. 

Andrew joined the UIF program as a result of his combined love for his Ohio State experience, education, and entreprenuership. When Andrew was in high school, he was given the unique opportunity to not only pitch multiple businesses, but also intern at mutliple startups. Looking back on those experiences, he realized that it was those unique opportunities that have helped lead him to where he is today. As a UIF Andrew would like to use his drive and energy to help other students have their own unique experiences in hopes to create more creative and empowered Buckeyes!

Jen Schlegel is a University Innovation Fellow, a Biomedical Engineering student at The Ohio State University, and a certified ADA/504 Coordinator. After finishing her Bachelor's she plans to continue to get a Masters in Medical Product Design while initializing a mobility/accessibility focused engineering firm. Jen’s ultimate dream is to become a neurologist and she’s a maker/creator/inventor with a life-long goal of improving people’s quality of life. 

In 2019, Jen won The Ohio State University's Student Life Disability Services Outstanding Student Advocate Award, which honors students who act as exemplary advocates for disability access and inclusion on campus. In 2018 she won the Techhub Grant for HandikAPP; A touchscreen platform to give limited-to-no dexterity users access to advanced coding capabilities. In March 2019 she won the The Wexner Medical Center Brain Health Hack with an application for better medical response to chronic health instances. She was also a finalist in the Toyota Mobility Project in 2015 for an Application to improve indoor mobility for people with disabilities, a runner up in the IMR Innovat-o-thon in 2018 and placed third in the Business Builders Club IdeaPitch in April 2019. Jen is currently one of five finalists for the OSU President’s Prize. 

She has been an member of the OnRamp Accelerator Program at OSU, and a project leader for the Medical Innovation Club with sponsorships from the Innovation Studio. She is also a project leader for Engineers for Community Service, where they design and build custom bikes for children with disabilities. McKinney grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin in a multicultural household. He's always intended to study design and pursue entrepreneurship.</div><div> </div><div>At the Ohio State University, Kai is involved in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Scholars (EIS) program, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), and the Business Builders Club. Additionally, he's worked as an intern in the Fisher College of Business and the Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship since his first year of undergraduate study. Kai co-founded LaunchpadOSU, a landmark community-based startup event, in his second year of study. Through the Center for Innovative Studies, Kai served as an innovation consultant intern through OnRamp, which partnered student innovation with multinational corporations. Through a culmination of experiences that have challenged, educated, and inspired her, she has learned to embrace risk, to take advantage of opportunities, and to welcome continuous learning. She spent her first summer during college in Cape Town, South Africa studying virtual reality, fueling her passion for areas that merge creative and analytical thinking. She seeks opportunities that support this learning and growth on campus. She serves as a teaching assistant for one of the fundamental computer science courses at Ohio State and is heavily involved in Code 4 Community where she teaches basic computer science concepts to middle and high school students. Additionally, she loves playing tennis in her free time and is a member of the Ohio State Club Tennis Team.

The University Innovation Fellows program posed the perfect opportunity for Lauren to further develop and apply her skills in Design Thinking in such a way that provides benefit to her fellow students on campus. Her experiences in computer science and cross-cultural communication have strengthened her interest in pursuing initiatives that promote a healthy lifestyle, diverse interactions, and technological innovation. Jen Schlegel is a University Innovation Fellow, a Biomedical Engineering student at The Ohio State University, and a certified ADA/504 Coordinator. After finishing her Bachelor's she plans to continue to get a Masters in Medical Product Design while initializing a mobility/accessibility focused engineering firm. Jen’s ultimate dream is to become a neurologist and she’s a maker/creator/inventor with a life-long goal of improving people’s quality of life. 

In 2019, Jen won The Ohio State University's Student Life Disability Services Outstanding Student Advocate Award, which honors students who act as exemplary advocates for disability access and inclusion on campus. In 2018 she won the Techhub Grant for HandikAPP; A touchscreen platform to give limited-to-no dexterity users access to advanced coding capabilities. In March 2019 she won the The Wexner Medical Center Brain Health Hack with an application for better medical response to chronic health instances. She was also a finalist in the Toyota Mobility Project in 2015 for an Application to improve indoor mobility for people with disabilities, a runner up in the IMR Innovat-o-thon in 2018 and placed third in the Business Builders Club IdeaPitch in April 2019. Jen is currently one of five finalists for the OSU President’s Prize. 



She has been an member of the OnRamp Accelerator Program at OSU, and a project leader for the Medical Innovation Club with sponsorships from the Innovation Studio. She is also a project leader for Engineers for Community Service, where they design and build custom bikes for children with disabilities. = Priority 2: Expand Innovation and Entrepreneurial Education =

Ohio State has a few programs that teach innovative and entrepreneurial methods including the Entrepreneurship and Innovation minor and the Integrated Business and Engineering (IBE) Honors program. However, these are both multi-year commitments that many students are unwilling to make. In addition to these, we would like to create programming that provides a one semester introduction to concepts such as Lean Startup, Design thinking, and other problem-centric methodologies.

Columbus has a burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, this ecosystem has difficulty extending to OSU as there is a lack of entrepreneurial spirit on campus and the company's that students start are often not well publicized. One of the priorities the fellows will be leading is to foster an entrepreneurial and innovative community on campus as well as enhance the quantitiy and availability of mentorship, funding, and accelerators.

Abenisek:

Andrew Benisek is a University Innovation Fellow at The Ohio State University studing Computer Science Engineering in the Integrated Business and Engineering Honor Program. On campus, Andrew focuses on working across colleges to not only help others to gain breadth in their knowledge and skillset. He is an undergraduate teaching assistant in the Department of Engineering Education, helps run a non-profit focused of financial equality and economic growth, and works with his peers to help strengthen the IBE program on strategic projects. As a fulltime career, Andrew would like to go into Product Management where he can work every day to help improve the lives of product users around the world. 

Andrew joined the UIF program as a result of his combined love for his Ohio State experience, education, and entreprenuership. When Andrew was in high school, he was given the unique opportunity to not only pitch multiple businesses, but also intern at mutliple startups. Looking back on those experiences, he realized that it was those unique opportunities that have helped lead him to where he is today. As a UIF Andrew would like to use his drive and energy to help other students have their own unique experiences in hopes to create more creative and empowered Buckeyes!

After 3 years of the UIF program at The Ohio State University, we have noticed that our university is lacking an owner for the I&E landscape. As the university becomes more siloed with the growth of its individual colleges, I&E projects continue to be held in the dark due to the lack of communication. The peak of learning happens at action and implementation, so it seems counter-intuitive for business students to be learning solely from lecture. This initiative will push the bounds of the current curriculum for multiple classes and encourage more project-based work and real-world learning outcomes.

Columbus has a burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, this ecosystem has difficulty extending to OSU as there is a lack of entrepreneurial spirit on campus and the company's that students start are often not well publicized. One of the priorities the fellows will be leading is to foster an entrepreneurial and innovative community on campus as well as enhance the quantitiy and availability of mentorship, funding, and accelerators.

The fellows plan on working with the administration as well as other related parties in the Colubmus area to eventually open up an accelerator program where student founders can be put through a rigorous program where their will fine tune their ideas and get the funding and mentorship they need to successfully launch their business.</li>
